...back in Kazakhstan after this blog has circulated the internet. Trust me, they could not pay me enough to go back to that place. Between forging signatures on contracts, stealing money from the players and ten-hour days at the rink, the only downtime was in a train cabin with three other Canadians for thirty-six straight hours. By the end of the season there will either be some criminal convictions or a suicide attempt, and I was not going to be part of either, so I had to jump on the camel and ride out of town while I still had the chance. Some of you have read my initial blog regarding my experience during training camp. If I had the knowledge I do now during training camp, I would never have played a regular season game for Beibarys Atyrau. However, hindsight is 20/20, and I started the season in Western Kazakhstan 30 kilometers from the Caspian Sea. My contract was breached in every way possible from the time I arrived until the time I left Kazakhstan. Salary payments were supposed to be made “promptly” at the beginning of the following month. So, salary payments for the month of August should have been paid September 1st … but they were not. Instead, we received a portion of our payment on the 17th. I say portion because we were not paid in full. The team President decided that we performed poorly at the exhibition tournament in Eastern Kazakhstan and deducted every player 10% of our “bonus” pay. When the imports and myself heard about this for the first time, we were...

...the Ministry of Oil and Gas of Republic of Kazakhstan, confirmed hydrocarbon reserves, both onshore and offshore, are estimated to be 4.8 billion tons or more than 35 billion barrels for 2012. Kazakhstan possesses unique geographical features that lead the country’s oil and gas cluster to be spread throughout the entire country, instead of one specific geographical area. Around 70% of Kazakhstan’s oil and gas reserves, both onshore and offshore, are concentrated in Western Kazakhstan around the city of Atyrau. Some oil reserves are also located in Southern Kazakhstan but the prospects for new discoveries there are not very promising (US-Kazakhstan Business Association). The majority of hydrocarbon reserves are located in the oil- and gas-rich regions of Kashagan, Tengiz and Karachaganak. The discovery of the Kashagan Field in 2000 is considered to be the largest oil field discovery in the last 30 years. The Kashagan Field, located 80 kilometres south-east of the city of Atyrau in the northern part of the Caspian Sea region, is operated by Agip KCO. The field is estimated to hold a maximum of 35 billion barrels of oil, of which 13 billion barrels may be potentially extracted by re-injecting acid gases. The Tengiz Field, whose estimated commercial oil reserves...

Overview Kazakhstan"s oil sector accounts for around 30% of GDP and more than half of the country"s export revenue. With proven reserves of 39.8bn barrels in 2008, according to BP (a UK oil conglomerate), the largest proven oil reserves base of the Caspian Sea region, it accounts for 3.2% of the world"s total oil reserves, and has a reserves-to-production ratio of 70 years. Gas output (at around 30bn cu metres annually) and consumption is currently roughly balanced, although exports are set to rise as output at the main Karachaganak field picks up. Owing to the Soviet-era structure of Kazakhstan"s gas and electricity distribution networks, which are concentrated in the northern and western regions, closest to the main sources, Kazakhstan is forced to import both resources for the southern regions. The government has become...

...Introduction to International Business Course project: Barriers for franchise business in Kazakhstan Prepared by Shynar Galiyeva 2013 Introduction Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the world, sharing its borders with Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan. Astana is the capital and Almaty is the largest city and considered to be a financial center of the country. The population of Kazakhstan is about, 16 million, which is low considering the large size of the territory. Nowadays Kazakhstan is known as a country committed to the principles of democracy and market-based economy. After the collapse of Soviet Union and over 20 years of transition period, Kazakhstan has developed into one of the leading economies within the Commonwealth of Independent Countries (CIS). This was achieved mostly because Kazakhstan is very rich for natural resources. Up to the present time, around, 160 oil and gas deposits have been discovered on the territory of the country. Business in Kazakhstan is often focused on the oil and gas sector, which has been responsible for the country’s strong economic expansion over the last decades. However, these are not the only strong sectors of Kazakhstani economy, it possesses almost a quarter of the world’s uranium reserves, holds leading ranks in reserves of barite, chromite, phosphate, copper, lead, zinc, iron ore and gold. Although, Kazakhstan’s economic growth is profoundly dependent on the oil and mining sectors...
