Understanding and analysing one's audience is one of the most important elements of effective communication. The process of gathering information about the people in one’s audience is known as audience analysis. It relies on acquiring information about the overall make-up of your potential audience. Such demographic and psychographic factors as the approximate age, likely gender composition, attitudinal bias or prejudices relating to cultural or religious beliefs; level of education; motivation for listening and prior knowledge of the audience on the topic will all influence the way you compose your communication. Audience analysis can help one gain valuable insight about his/ her readers, which can help to choose and develop a relevant, meaningful topic. It can be used to tailor messages to a specific audience with the appropriate content, language and method of delivery to ensure effective communiation.

Words are the means by which people communicate their messages, and appropriate language choice is one of the primary keys to an effective communication. If one used jargon (technical terms) where the expectation was simple language, the intended message may not get across. Similarly, if slang (informal language e.g. what up dawg?) was used, the audience might not understand or perceive one as rude, and it would be ineffective communication. Both jargon and slang risk an unclear message. It is tempting to use jargon because the words can be efficient descriptors of a concept, however, as efficient as the words may be, if they are not clear to the audience, the communication will not be effective. Thus, audience analysis can be used to identify a vocabulary the audience will understand and prepare beforehand in order to get the message across
