...Audience, Purpose, Tone, and Content COM/155 - UNIVERSITY COMPOSITION AND COMMUNICATION I Instructor: JEFF ARVIZU By In this paper we are going to discuss the importance of purpose, audience, tone, and content in academic writing. Without these four things to structure your paragraph it is hard to have a paragraph or paper that will hold your audience. The purpose of a paragraph is why the writer initially wrote the writing. ...Lincoln and Douglass: Struggle between Freedom and Slavery by Feross Aboukhadijeh, 11th grade During the Civil War era there existed many factions seeking to dramatically change America. Remarkable speakers spread their ideas through oratory, thrilling their audiences through powerful speeches that appealed to both emotion and logic. Frederick Douglass, a black American, fought for black civil rights through compelling speeches like “What to the slave is the Fourth of July?” depicting the terrors of slavery in graphic detail. Abraham Lincoln, on the other hand, spoke peacefully and optimistically during his Second Inaugural Address to demonstrate his desire for peace and reconciliation with the Confederate states. Both speakers captivated their audiences through compelling diction, tone, and argumentative methods to win them over and gain their support. Lincoln’s sole desire before, during, and after the Civil War was to maintain national unity. This was his job as president and the entire reason for fighting the Civil War. During his Second Inaugural Address, Lincoln reaffirmed the purpose of the war through choice diction. He stated that the South would “…make war rather than let the nation survive…” and though the he “…deprecated war…” he would accept it “…rather than let the nation perish…” Furthermore, during the course of the war, Lincoln freed all the slaves with his Emancipation Proclamation in order to weaken the South. However, he did not want the American people...

You cannot follow the characters, action, or conflict because the author of the review rambles on and on. Without clear paragraphs, this review will likely lose your interest, and you may skip the movie altogether! When you are the writer, it is helpful to position yourself as a reader. Ask yourself whether you can focus easily on each point you make. Effective writers use a single paragraph for each new idea they introduce. Paragraphs separate ideas into logical, manageable, and distinct units. Each paragraph focuses on only one main idea and presents coherent sentences to support that single point. Because all the sentences in one paragraph support the same point, a paragraph may stand on its own. Each paragraph is shaped by Purpose: the reason why the writer composes the paragraph. < Tone: the attitude the writer conveys about the paragraph’s subject. < Audience: the individual or group whom the writer intends to address. < Content: the written material in the paragraph...

...Both texts similarly use comical Lexis to create an informal tone for the purpose to mock and entertain. 'The Stone Age Report' is a transcript of an extract from 'Horrible Histories' which is a fact based children's programme that often exaggerates and mocks historical events in order to teach yet entertain the young audience. In 'The Stone Age Report' Bob Hale, a fictional news reporter, often creates an informal tone through his use of atypical scientific terms which are often slightly altered to suit the young audience. This is evident as 'homo heidelbergensis' is abbreviated to simply 'Heidi', creating a less formal register which refers back to the initial purpose of 'Horrible Histories' that is to teach and entertain. Similarly in 'President Obama Orders An Ice-Cream' comical Lexis is used for satirical purposes to mock the typical exaggeration and overly serious tone that Obama possesses. The satirical piece published in 'Private Eye' is aimed at an older audience but aims to mock the supposed...

...such as “Why Is the Negro Lynched?” and “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” while Abraham Lincoln was fighting for unity for all within the Union and Confederate states. Both of these speakers were able to captivate their audiences through their unique tones, methods, and diction to win over the audience and gain their support. Unique Tones, Methods, and Diction for Douglass Douglass was very clear and had one purpose when it came to making speeches and that was to gain rights for the African American community. He believed in equality for all, regardless of what color they were. He was a former slave that had in fact experienced the terror of being a slave, and he had gained sympathy (1852) and credibility from his audience during “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” It was due to Douglass’ personal experiences that he was able to use pessimism and patronizing diction during this particular speech to show how he and all of the African Americans felt. Douglass stated, “I will use the severest language I can command; and yet not one word shall escape me that any man…shall not confess to be right and just” (1852). This grabbed the attention of the audience and forced everyone to listen to what he was going to say. He bad mouthed his audience and...

...Devil in the White City by Erik Larson intertwined two stories into one novel. One of the stories tells us about Daniel Burnham and his setbacks while trying to build and achieve the greatest fair in world history. The story of another man named H.H. Holmes occurs secretly as Burnham constructs the extravagant fair, and this novel captures his conniving plans and murders. The authors use of point of view, tone and diction to target the audience and develop the purpose: extravagant things overcast the evil that goes unnoticed. Larson wrote this novel to inform people about the factual happenings of the worlds fair construction and the lesser known murder of H.H. Holmes, but he also wrote to show the audience that extravagant things can cause people to overlook disturbing yet important truths. Larson’s use of third point of view and switches from Burnham's point of view in a chapter to Holmes...

...Solutions, Inc. The purpose of this document is to inform and provide information to employees about the company policy regards to annual bonus leave for employees with outstanding performance. The purpose of the document was fulfilled because it gave out important information only, it got straight to the point, and it also was appropriate for any audience to read. Even though this document is from 2006, it is a memo that I found to be quite relevant and well- organized. Memos relay information, give directives, and provide instructions. Information about the subject is presented in a straightforward, helpful manner. The document is very successfully written because it has a readable style, the tone of the piece is appropriate for the audience, and it also has sensible organization. In this analysis, I evaluated the document on regards to how successful it was and by bringing in examples to back up my statements. The style of the document is readable for the audiences that it was intended for, which are the department heads and the employees. The memo is very clear and concise. It was written in a way for a semi technical reader to understand. (The bonus leave will be accounted for separately and will remain available until used, notwithstanding any other limitation of the total number of days of annual leave that may be carried forward. Clear writing helps people to read each sentence only once in order to fully grasp its meaning. The importance of a memo’s tone is very important...
