...English A Barrier Intended to Mark a Boundary Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary defines fence as “a barrier intended to prevent escape or intrusion to mark a boundary”. August Wilson’s Fences portrays the barrier around the Maxson family. “The setting is the yard which fronts the only entrance… The yard is a small dirt yard, partially fenced, except for the last scene…” (0.1-0.3). Throughout the play Wilson uses the description and placement of the fence to change the mood in the scene or the attitudes of the characters. “Much of the conflict… arises because the characters are at odds with the way they see the past and what they want to do in the future”(sparknotes.com). Whether the fence is too keep people in or out, there is always a struggle to know what is on the other side. Corresponding to the text, August Wilson’s own life is exemplified. Wilson uses “the settings of all but one of the plays [in] the Pittsburgh ‘hill district’” (Edgar 1328). During the early part of his life was spent living in poverty. Wilson’s father soon left the family by the time he was five leaving his mother, Daisy, to care for the six children. She later remarried and moved to the Hill District. Wilson felt the pressure of being one of the only African-American students and dropped out of school to teach himself in the library. “He educated himself so well that eventually the Library granted him a degree”(Edgar 1328). When writing Fences, Wilson pulled from the 1950s and the Civil Rights...

...Even though Fences by August Wilson is a play with an African-American family trying to make ends meet, it is relatable to many. Everyday people face challenges and inner demons. It’s a part of life. The fence itself is very important to the play, hence the title, and has several meanings. Fences are normally meant to keep things in or keep things out. The Fence is both literal and figurative for the Maxson family (Bissiri). The reason the fence takes the whole play to be finished is because Troy has been putting it off. He gives Cory a hard time for not being around to work on it, but Cory argues that he isnt around to work on it much either. Cory says "don't never do nothing, but go down to Taylors'" (1.3.5). Troy doesn’t actually go to...

...Why do we build fences? Why do we barricade ourselves? Why do we put up walls? Is it because we want to isolate ourselves from the world? Is it because we want to mark our property, perhaps to shut people out? Or is it because we so desperately want to protect what we possess from exterior forces? What exactly do fences serve a purpose? In a literal sense, a fence is a barrier enclosing an area of ground to mark a boundary control access or prevent escape (www.merriam-webster.com). However, for August Wilson, fences aren’t just a bunch of wood constructed together to form a railing; to him, it is clear that there are far more profound and hidden propositions regarding the subject matter. Notice that the title is in its plural form, this goes...

...L. Choi Christmas in August: the Conventional Unconventional Following the Korean War, South Korean film industry faced its “Golden Age”, thriving with a series of vibrant, high-quality domestic film productions. While directors during this period produced a body of work as “historically, aesthetically, and politically significant as that of other well-known national film movements such as Italian Neorealism, French New Wave, and New German Cinema” (McHugh and Abelmann 2), the dictatorship of Park Chung Hee in the late 1960s put an end to creative freedom. The South Korean cinema resurfaced in the 1990s, taking a new step and presenting films that mix a variety of genres and different sensibilities. After the 1997 International Monetary Fund economic crisis, South Korea experienced an unusually rapid growth in the film industry and faced its first “stirrings of what was to develop into a creative and commercial boom” (Paquet 37). In early 1998, in the midst of the industrial transformation, director Hur Jin-Ho released a “muted, tragic-themed melodrama” (Paquet 37) - Christmas in August. The film ranked as one of the highest grossing at the domestic box office in 1998, benefiting greatly from its casting of the two lead roles - actor Han Seok-Kyu and actress Shim Eun-Ha. The two leads carry out a natural performance throughout the film and display a remarkable chemistry with their delightfully low-key and perfect depiction of each of the protagonists. Unlike the traditional...

...The power behind memories A commonly used quote reads “Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose” (Arnold). In “The Piano Lesson”, August Wilson creates a theme of holding onto the things that you love and the effects of slavery. Boy Willie fights over the piano to gain success while Berniece fights over it because she holds onto the dear memories of the Piano and the meaning behind it. In this play, the piano symbolizes the family history of the Charles family and it creates a theme of memory and slavery. The Piano’s History symbolizes all the wrongs about slavery. Doaker: "[Willie Boy] carved all this. […] He got a picture of his mama…Mama Esther…and his daddy, Boy Charles. […] He got all...

...Evan (August Rush) throughout the entire movie, as he was on his journey in search of his parents, inspired so much people through his talent in music. People such as Arthur, Wizard, Hope, and many others whom he encountered during his journey. Not only he is an expert in hearing any kind of sound and music, but he can pick up whatever any kind of instrument so quickly, such as when Evan played Wizard's guitar, which he named "Roxanne" or "Roxy", is not the way it is usually played. Instead, Evan played the guitar like a piano, which surprised Wizard, Arthur, and all the other orphaned children. When he played Wizard's guitar his own way, it produced new kinds of sounds that are considered revolutionary, but in real life, it is considered impossible, unless a real-life prodigy like Evan could do such a thing. Not only that, when Evan saw Hope playing the piano, at first, Evan doesn't know how to play it, but when he saw the musical notebook in front of the piano, with just the sounds he heard from outside plus his fantastic imagination, he was able to produce musical notes, and to Hope's surprise, Evan's scattered works filled with musical notes amazed Hope and convinced the parish pastor that Evan is a genius. I was even more impressed with Evan when I found out that Reverend J, the parish pastor, enrolled Evan to the Julliard School, where most people studying there are college students. While at Julliard, he composed his own rhapsody that, later in the movie, became part...

...Imagine what a bad parent looks like. Would they yell or hurt a child? Throughout Fences, a play by August Wilson, Troy Maxson shows us what a bad parent is. There are three dominant examples to prove he’s a bad parent. He doesn’t support his children in their dreams, he’s never shown that he loves his children, he’s an alcoholic, and when he’s drunk Troy gets aggressive towards Cory. One way Troy demonstrates he’s a bad parent is by not supporting his children in their dreams. “Papa done went up to the school and told coach Zellman I can’t play football no more. Wouldn’t let me play the game told him to tell the recruiter not to come.” (Wilson, 57). In the play Troy and his youngest son Cory fight many times about football. Cory is a talented athlete who enjoys football and wants to play for his high school team. Troy on the other hand doesn’t approve, he believes that black people don’t get the same opportunities as whites. While he may be talented he will never make it as an athlete out in the world. It still doesn’t justify why Troy can’t support Cory and let him play football....

...4/18/11 Theatre 2040 August: Osage County Critique I felt that the play over all was well put together. The play takes one extremely dysfunctional family, and uses it to illustrate a plethora of things that can go wrong within a family. The play is filled with dark humor, and has a feel to match. The play starts out with Beverly in his study rambling on about philosophy to a new live in maid he has hired to look after the house. As he rambles his wife, Violet, wakes up, barred out on pills, stumbles downstairs and insults the new house hand. This is just the beginning of the many insults and sarcastic remarks that Violet will plague the stage with. After this scene closes Beverly in no longer on the stage and it soon become apparent that Beverly is missing. Beverly’s boat is also missing. His daughters come back home as does Violet’s sister Mattie. As the scene progresses some of the problems the different parts of the family have begun to surface. It is revealed that Barbra and bill are separated due to Bill’s affairs with Celia, one of his students. There is also a scene where it is revealed that Jean has taken to smoking pot. At the end of the scene sheriff Deon who, Barbra, dated in high school informs the family that Beverly’s body had been found in a lake. Barbra as a blood relative has to identify the body. All of the family realizes that Beverly’s death was more than likely suicide. The second act has the family coming back from the funeral to a formal...

...Antagonizing Garbage Man In August Wilson’s play Fences, there are situations to easily point a finger of blame. A family struggles to keep their dynamic as the weight of their roles become a burden. In a time where the oppression of the black community is set in place, it leaves a stigma on the population. At a certain point each character struggles with maintaining their role as well the responsibilities required of them. The plays arguable antagonist Troy Maxson is first portrayed as a well-rounded yet close minded father and husband. He seems to almost be bothered by the company of his friends and family with always having a snide remark as he greets or interacts with them. Neglected by his mother when he is younger and being left with a ruthless father, Troy leaves home before he is an adult and this force to grow before he is ready shows in his relationships. In my opinion, every character shows a part in each event, however, they are all tied to the main character Troy and how he handles it leads to the unraveling of this play....

...transcend. Troy was a product of his past experiences which included his father who did not teach him violence instead of love. The mistake his father made in the past, he is making them in the present instead of forgetting them and forgiving them. In the play “Fences,” Troy's conflict with himself shows an irony that people make their life harder than other people do. The play deals with complex social issues like racism and adultery, which increases the dramatic impact upon the readers. The protagonist's internal conflict with his color and unfulfilled dream caused conflict with his family members. The main ideas of the play such as mortality, father and son relationship, love and duty are genuine, and this can happen to any person. August Wilson beautifully used the characters, their conflicts and setting to throw light on the themes of the play. ...
