Augusta Ada Byron, more commonly known as Ada Lovelace, was born on December 10, 1815 to the famous poet Lord Byron and mathematician Anne Milbanke. Her parents one year marriage was short lived as Lady Byron divorced her husband a month after Ada’s birth. Her mother received sole custody, removing Lord Byron out of her life. Ada was raised by her maternal grandmother and servants, however her mother controlled her educational life. She was stern and austere, adamant that Ada was nothing like her poetic father. During these times women did not attend universities, but her aristocratic status allowed her to have private tutoring in subjects such as mathematics, music, French, and science. At this party he demonstrated his current project, the Difference Engine, which captivated Ada who saw the potential it had. Through their mutual love of mathematics, engineering, and logic these two became lifelong friends and collaborators. Ada and her mother would participate in unusual activities for women such as visiting factories to observe steam driven machines. One significant machine they observed was the Jacquard loom. This machine produced textiles with patterns that were instructed by punch cards. In 1835 Ada married William King, Earl of Lovelace. The couple’s social circle included Sir David Brewster, Charles Dickens, Charles Wheatstone, and Michael Faraday. Together they had three children: Anne Blunt, Ralph King-Milbanke, and Byron King-Noel. During this brief period of time she focused on her personal life, yet still independently educated herself in mathematics. In 1841 she began interacting with other mathematicians including Professor Augustus De Morgan who gave her advanced math to work on. During these years Babbage was working on developments of an elaborate analytical engine.
