Austin VS. Dallas Compare and Contrast (Draft #1)

Senator William Blakely once said, “Texas is neither southern nor western. Texas is Texas.” Although this well-stated quote exemplifies the pride that Texans have for their home state, the blanket proclamation is one that fails to distinguish the unique characteristics found in nearly every region of the lone star state. A quote that offers a much more accurate description and distinguishes the diversity and differences of each city/region was made by professional golfer Lee Trevino when he stated, “If you’ve ever driven across Texas, you know how different one area of the state can be from another. Take El Paso. It looks as much like Dallas as I look like Jack Nicklaus.” The quote is a metaphor that juxtaposes the similarities shared between El Paso and Dallas to the physical similarities shared between Jack Nicklaus, one of the most decorated golfers of all time, and Lee Trevino, a Mexican-American golfer.
Now, more than ever, there are more differences between each region in Texas than there are similarities. Two such regions that have undoubtedly diverged from their common ancestry are the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area and the Austin “Hill Country” region. From sports and music, to leisure activities and geography, each area boasts its own culture that is neither superior nor lesser to its counterpart.
In 2011, the official U.S. Census ranked the Dallas-Fort Worth area as the largest metropolitan area in the south. The expanse, which also accounts for Plano, Irving, Arlington, as well as a range of other small cities, is estimated to encompass over 6.5 million residents, which each contribute to the unique culture of “The Metroplex.” The territory is unique in that majority of the land is categorized as blackland prairies, with elevations ranging from 450 feet to 550 feet above sea level. The organization also has responsibility for settling transactions in the state’s wholesale spot market for electricity. But the term “ERCOT” also is used loosely in other ways. For instance, the term can describe the geographical footprint for retail electric deregulation in Texas. It is also sometimes used to describe the state’s wholesale energy market. This report touches upon policy questions relating to all these conceptualizations of ERCOT: as an organization, as an energy market, and as the area of Texas with competitive electric suppliers. To distinguish between these meanings, the term “ERCOT” will be used whenever practicable to refer to the organization, “the ERCOT region” will be used to refer to deregulated areas of the state...

Undertaker

...will be a better year than 2014 was. One of the things that is on a lot of people’s minds is whether or not The Undertaker will wrestle at WrestleMania 31. The latest bit of news about The Undertaker is that WWE wants him to work because he’s making around $1 million per year and they want to get a return on their investment, so to speak. If he does wrestle at WrestleMania 31 then his likely opponent is Bray Wyatt. At this point, nobody really knows if he’ll compete and we probably won’t find out for sure for another month or two. Next year’s WrestleMania could be the time where he decides not to come back. Maybe he can get inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015 or even better in 2016 in his home state of Texas since it’s going to be in Dallas. Whatever he decides, fans should respect him because of all that he’s done in his amazing career. Nobody deserves our respect more than him. What if he doesn’t wrestle, though? He’s at a point in his life where he really doesn’t need to wrestle anymore. He has a wife (Michelle McCool) who he has a daughter with, he has other children from previous marriage and he’s done enough to entertain us. There really is nothing left for him to do. Should he wrestle or should he retire for good? It’s a debate fans will have for several months and then in the years that follow. I’ve been at three of the past four WrestleManias including the one from this year. His matches are so compelling live, but there comes a time in everybody’s career where they...

Fracking and the Eagle Ford Shale

...Delivery date: April 19th 2013 NPRE 101 – INTRODUCTION TO ENERGY SOURCES END OF TERM PAPER PROF. RUZIC HYDRAULIC FRACTURING AND THE EAGLE FORD SHALE Patricio Calles Almeida – UIN 651559726 Everyone knows that the urge to find an alternative to fossil fuels is one of the top priorities of technology researchers and scientists. We also know that the United States is becoming more and more dependable on foreign resources as the national ones are running low. However, fossil fuels are still the only cost-effective sources of them all. You could argue that hydroelectric and nuclear power are on the rise, but the first one does not produce large scale amounts of energy and the latter requires a huge initial investment with long waits until returns and profits; all the previous makes these sources not really convenient in developing countries, the ones that ironically need is the most. That’s why fossil fuel sources will continue to dominate the energy scene for the next decades, at least. In this context, I want to focus my paper on hydraulic fracturing, fracking. Actually, more specifically, the absolute focus will be to relate this modern method of oil and natural gas extraction with the Eagle Ford Shale, located in South Texas. Specifications and characteristics that make this shale so appealing for fracking will be a part of the following analysis. Overall, the shale is one that could be the biggest production center of oil and natural gas of the US and bring lots...

Linneman Re Letter

...Volume 10, Issue 3 Fall 2010 No Double Dip On July 5th, 6th, and very early on the 7th of this year, I engaged in 70 minutes of rigorous stationary biking, a full cycle of weightlifting, and my daily stretching regimen. Oh sure, I had some hip pain and a sore knee, but at age 59, I was rocking and rolling. In this regard, I was not unlike the U.S. economy in 2005-April 2007, which was doing great in spite of some fundamental problems. Then in the course of a few hours on July 7th, I was unable to walk more than a few steps after having a hip replaced. Just like the U.S. economy in late 2008, my infirmity had taken me down a few notches! My subsequent recovery was remarkably similar to that facing the U.S. economy: a satisfactory recovery to unremarkable mediocrity. As I describe my recovery, bear in mind that the U.S. economy shed 8.4 million jobs and 4.1% of GDP in roughly 18 months. This is a lot of economic damage. On July 8th, I was able to walk twice a day for 20 minutes, bearing weight on crutches, lifting light hand weights, and doing simple leg therapy. By July 19th, I did not need any pills or a cane, and was able to walk an hour twice a day at a 23-minute-mile pace. By August 19th, I biked at full resistance for 50 minutes, walked 15-minute-miles for an hour, actively lifted leg weights, Thru Latest Available as of Sept 20, 2010 3.0 $420.5 20.5 1.9 960.1 $418 15.8 6.3 1,458.0 723.0 -50.0 261.0 681.0 15.8 4.5 20.0 93.9 -2.3 2.4 -190.2 $305.1 -$351.9 On the...

...market success were due to “remain a uniquely mission-driven company-highly selective about what we sell, dedicated to our core values and stringent standards and committed to sustainable agriculture.” Whole Foods company’s motto- “Whole Foods, Whole People, Whole Planet” the statement alone assumes its core mission is beyond food retail it’s about our world/environment we live in. According to hoover.com, Whole Foods planned to reach $12 billion in sales by 2010 by adding 25-30 new stores a year. Due to competition and “the economy has slowed the company’s sales growth, it increased by only 1% in fiscal 2009 vs. 2008 to about $8 billion.” The stores emphasize perishable products, which account for about two-thirds of sales. Whole Foods Market offers some 2,200 items in four lines of private-label products (such as the premium Whole Foods line). Founded in Austin, Texas, in 1980, Whole Foods Market initiated the supermarket concept in natural and organic foods retailing. Identification of key problems/strategic issues * From 1992-2007 Whole Foods acquired 10 competitors and added 197 stores to Whole Foods chain. By doing this Whole Foods eliminated a lot of its competition, making the barrier to enter into this market more difficult for future competitors. * In 2007, Whole Foods took on long-term debt of more than $700 million and $250 million revolving line of credit with its bank. * Line of credit later...

Demographics of Texas Home-Schooled Students

...What is the Demographic Make-up of Home-Schooled Students in Texas? Jimmy L. Dillon Wayland Baptist University EDUC 5302 July 19, 2012 Abstract This study was conducted to try to determine what the overall demographics and make-up is of home-schooled students in Texas. The home-school phenomenon has proved to be a viable education option for parents who do not want to send their children to a public or private school. The reasons for wanting to home-school vary from parent-to-parent. Studies abound in comparing home-schooled student’s achievement to public school students with the general result that home-school students score higher on achievement test than public school students. Home-schooled consistently scored in the 82nd to 92nd percentile and the public school students scored in the 53rd – 71st percentile (Martin-Chang, Gould, & Meuse, 2011). However; are these studies comparing students from similar demographics such as economic status, region of residence, etc. or is there deep differences in demographics of the two populations which make the comparisons misleading? It has been studied and shown that a child’s socioeconomic status (SES) and overall demographics play a major factor in how well they score on academic achievement tests. The area that has not been looked at is what the overall demographics are of the average home-schooled child and if the ratio of lower SES to upper-middle class students are the same in comparison to the public school....

“Bricks-and-Mortar” vs. “Clicks-and-Mortar”: an Equilibrium Analysis

...“Bricks-and-Mortar” vs. “Clicks-and-Mortar”: an Equilibrium Analysis Fernando Bernstein Jing-Sheng Song Xiaona Zheng The Fuqua School of Business The Fuqua School of Business Guanghua School of Management Duke University Duke University Peking University Durham, NC 27708 Durham, NC 27708 Beijing, China 100871 Forthcoming in European Journal of Operational Research The Internet has provided traditional retailers a new means with which to serve customers. Consequently, many “bricks-and-mortar” retailers have transformed to “clicks-and-mortar” by incorporating Internet sales. Examples of companies making such a transition include Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Barnes & Noble, etc. Despite the increasing prevalence of this practice, several fundamental questions remain: (1) Does it pay off to go online? (2) Which is the equilibrium industry structure? (3) What is the implication of this business model for consumers? We study these issues in an oligopoly setting and show that clicks-and-mortar arises as the equilibrium channel structure. However, we find that this equilibrium does not necessarily imply higher profits for the firms: in some cases, rather, it emerges as a strategic necessity. Consumers are generally better off with clicks-and-mortar retailers. If firms align with pure e-tailers to reach the online market, we show that a prisoner’s dilemma-type equilibrium may arise. ...Reelection 23. Domestic Disturbance 24. Conclusion Afterword Author’s Note Acknowledgments Notes Foreword When a governor or any state official seeks elective national office, his (or her) reputation and what the country knows about the candidate’s background is initially determined by the work of local and regional media. Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin. I was one of those Texas journalists. I spent about a decade trying to find accurate information on Bush’s record in the Texas National Guard. My curiosity had been prompted by his failure to adequately answer a question I had asked him as a panelist in a televised debate with Ann Richards during the 1994 gubernatorial campaign. Eventually I published three books on Bush and his political consigliere, Karl Rove. During Bush’s presidency, many other...

A Dynamic Oligopoly Game of the Us Airline Industry

...A Dynamic Oligopoly Game of the US Airline Industry: Estimation and Policy Experiments Victor Aguirregabiria∗ University of Toronto Chun-Yu Ho∗ Boston University This version: November 19, 2007 PRELIMINARY AND INCOMPLETE VERSION Abstract This paper estimates the contribution of demand, cost and strategic factors to explain why most companies in the US airline industry operate using a hub-spoke network. We postulate and estimate a dynamic oligopoly model where airline companies decide, every quarter, which routes (directional city-pairs) to operate, the type of product (direct flight vs. stop-flight), and the fare of each route-product. The model incorporates three factors which may contribute to the profitability of hub-spoke networks. First, consumers may value the scale of operation of an airline in the origin and destination airports (e.g., more convenient checking-in and landing facilities). Second, operating costs and entry costs may depend on the airline’s network because economies of density and scale. And third, a hub-spoke network may be an strategy to deter the entry of non hub-spoke carriers in some routes. We estimate our dynamic oligopoly model using panel data from the Airline Origin and Destination Survey with information on quantities, prices, and entry and exit decisions for every airline company over more than two thousand city-pair markets and several years. Demand and variable cost parameters are estimated using demand equations and Nash-Bertrand equilibrium...
