My parenting style is a combination of both authoritarian and authoritative for both of my daughters. In some circumstances, I am more authoritative. I can be fun and a playful mother at times. I am very flexible when disciplining my children when they don’t abide by my rules. With both of my daughters, I am very much supportive. As a parent, we don’t always know what’s best for our child and sometimes afraid to admit that our child/children are right. This is where I see the authoritarian parenting style of me. For example, I most likely say you do it because I said so. Being more direct with my daughters because I want them to obey my commands. My father and mother practiced and portrayed an authoritarian style of parenting. When instructions were given, my siblings and I had to follow. If we didn’t follow the commands of our parents, we knew that there were consequences for our actions. As, for my children, we never had a problem with them not following our commands because my husband and I believed in discipline and order. As a mother, my husband and both know our children. Danielle, the oldest, is the more outspoken child and she doesn’t follow the rules that much. Kelsey is the more shy child and doesn’t say that much unless spoken to. The only explanation I could only think of was the parenting style that her mother implemented at home. I have to say my parents and me being a parent myself always told our children to behave when they go to others house. Act like a little girl should, be mannerable and sit still. What was more shocking to be was that my sister didn’t say anything to her about running or yelling. It was more of a pat on the back and just a stare. What I have learned is that children respond differently to the person implementing discipline and children noticed the differences of the others in the environment. For, an example my sister didn’t have a response to the situation or tell Jahnia that what she was doing was wrong. As for me, the only thing I could think is that she normally behaves around this around my sister and she doesn’t implement discipline. Mostly likely she lets her behave how she wants to.
