Humans have a natural desire to feel loved and taken care of, and technology has introduced alternative ways to receive and give feelings of affection and warmth. Technological intimacy is a marriage between innate human behavior and the successful assimilation to technology as it rapidly and constantly evolves. Intimacy is often defined as physical closeness, but can be much more. Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) videos have become increasingly popular in recent years. They often depict younger women who whisper close to a microphone and create unusual relaxing sounds. The goal of these videos is to offer relaxation and comfort to the viewer and induce a euphoric tingling sensation that releases tension and promotes an overall feeling of calmness. These ASMR videos are only a small portion of modern progressions towards technological intimacy, but offer significant insight on what is to come. ASMR is a tingling feeling that starts at the top of your head and trickles down to the rest of your body, effusing a feeling of calmness and comfort. This feeling can be triggered by soft voices, tapping, brushing, scratching, and various other sounds. Humans are extraordinarily adaptable beings and will adjust to circumstances in order to fulfill basic needs. That’s what is happening with these ASMR video’s, people are adapting and connecting to this form of technological intimacy that exists through a screen, because it offers something we all need and constantly look for.
