The piece I choose to look at is “Avance”, by Cathie Bleck. Avance is defined as "the act of moving forward" and this is exactly the idea Bleck’s work evokes. Bleck's art has stark value which enhances the work. It is mostly monochromatic so the value and polarizing contrast makes the pieces more memorable to me. Also when a tiny splash of color is added, it acts as a little mystery. Bleck has described her series of paintings as an exploration into the “vulnerable nature of the human spirit and its immense resilience in the face of adversity”. This continuous balance between vulnerability and resilience is incredibly apparent in her work. All her figures (animal or human) are crafted to look very whole but it feels like a piece is missing.
