There were three different types of audience behaviour -an emotionally neutral audience that remained static throughout the talk, a positive audience which exhibited friendly and appreciative behaviour towards the speaker, and a negative audience, which exhibited hostile and bored expressions throughout the talk. A second factor was immersion: half of the 40 subjects experienced the virtual seminar room through a head-tracked head-mounted display and the remainder on a desktop system. Responses were measured using standard Personal Report of Confidence as a Public Speaker (PRCS) which was elicited prior to the experiment and after each talk. Several other standard psychological measures such as SCL-90-R (for screening for psychological disorder), the SAD and the FNE were also measured prior to the experiment. Other response variables included subjectively assessed somaticisation and a subject self-rating scale on performance...

The Negative Effects of Social Media

...The Negative Effects of Social Media Christine M. Boyd University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Social media is something that has become a part of the lives of millions. Every day we see people constantly posting on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Some think that these media outlets unite people together, but I’m beginning to think the contrary is closer to the truth. It’s common to see multiple people in a room glued to their phones instead of actually engaging with each other. In this paper, I will investigate why people have developed an obsession with social media, how social media creates a false reality, and how social media can be harmful to our mental health. There are a variety of reasons why people have developed an obsession with social media, making it harder to cut ties with it. According to the article Technology Addiction in Adolescents by Vivek Agarwal and Sujit Kumar Kar, “Companies making mobile phones, made them compatible for other technologies like – games, videos, internet browsing and many other applications which facilitate their wide circulation and making them more addicting objects” (pg. 171). When people have constant internet access through their smart phones, it makes it extremely difficult to avoid social media. Smart phones usually vibrate or make a noise when you get a Facebook or Twitter notification, which can increase your likelihood of checking the application. Along with constant internet access, excessive social media use has been linked...

Socialisation and the building of relationships is central to the game, which attracts an extremely broad audience worldwide: within 5 years of release, WoW's subscriber base grew to 11.5 million (Bradford, 2010, p.56). The Effect of Videogames on Student Achievement

...of traditional video games as well as online games. The demographics of the typical game player will be examined along with effects on the individual development and sociological perceptions. This article will also look at the potential education utility of video games and the effect of games on student engagement and social development. The College Gamer Recent data from UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute provides useful information about video game usage on college campuses. The data show that most college students have played video games, many play them regularly, and a small percentage use them as a primary means of entertainment and leisure. In the 2009 Freshman Survey, around 1% of respondents admitted to playing over 20 hours of videogames per week. Over 35% of the respondents stated that they play at least one hour per week. There is an enormous gender disparity in the amount of time spend on videogames. While less than 1 in 50 incoming freshmen women played more than 10 hours of videogames per week, 1 in 10 males admitted to doing this (UCLA Higher Education Research Institute, 2009). The disparity increases with 10 times more males than females admitting to playing more than 20 hours per week. Video game usage tends to drop significantly during the first year of college. Over 7% more students report playing no video games at all after the first year than they...

Evolution of Health Care Information Systems Paper

...EVOLUTION OF HEALTH CARE INFORMATION SYSTEMS PAPER EVOLUTION OF HEALTH CARE INFORMATION SYSTEMS PAPER 2 THE PATIENT RELATIONSHIPS WITH HEALTH CARE TECHNOLOGY My grandfather would often share stories of the neighborhood Doctor coming to visit the family home and providing medical care or just stopping in to say hello. They were extremely thorough, knew the entire family's history and actually became a part of the family. Over the years, the Doctor's relationship has evolved from the family member/neighborhood doctor to the world of physicians make diagnosis based on the available CPT code and patient visits are conducted via tele-medical devices. Medical relationships first transitioned from the family physician to neighborhood Doctor offices, then to company doctors and now Insurance Companies who act as puppet masters for physicians. I spoke with a friend whom is a physician over the weekend and she said, Medical care is very different than what she pictured it to be. As a doctor, she is as concerned about the times outlined by insurance companies and CPT codes as she about the patient’s health. I am sure my grandfather could have never imagined this type of relationship with his family doctor. To bridge the gap between the physician patient relationship of yesterday and today, technology savvy healthcare providers are using personal digital assistants (PDA) to act as the provider memory bank. The advancement of PDAs is just one of the many revolutionary advances that...
