Ave Maria Prayer : The Latin text of the Ave Maria prayer set to the music by Franz Schubert
Ave Maria
German translation by Adam Storck from
"The Lady of the Lake" by Sir Walter Scott
Ave Maria! Ave Maria! maiden mild!
Listen to a maiden's prayer!
Thou canst hear though from the wild,
Thou canst save amid despair.
Safe may we sleep beneath thy care,
Though banish'd, outcast and reviled -
Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer;
Mother, hear a suppliant child!
Ave Maria!

Ave Maria! undefiled!
The flinty couch we now must share
Shall seem this down of eider piled,
If thy protection hover there.
The murky cavern's heavy air
Shall breathe of balm if thou hast smiled;
Then, Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer;
Mother, list a suppliant child!
Ave Maria!

Ave Maria! stainless styled!
Foul demons of the earth and air,
From this their wonted haunt exiled,
Shall flee before thy presence fair.
We bow us to our lot of care,
Beneath thy guidance reconciled;
Hear for a maid a maiden's prayer,
And for a father hear a child!
Ave Maria!

...The book, printed in Gothic letters and Tagalog1 characters on paper made from the paper mulberry, now browned and brittle with age, consists of thirty-eight leaves, comprising a title-page as above, under a woodcut2 of St. Dominic, with the verso originally blank, but in this copy bearing the contemporary manuscript inscription, Tassada en dos rreales, signed Juan de Cuellar; and seventy-four pages of text in Spanish, Tagalog transliterated into roman letters, and Tagalog in Tagalog characters. The size of the volume, which is unbound, is 9⅛ by 7 inches, [4]although individual leaves vary somewhat due to chipping. Some of the leaves have become separated from their complements, but enough remain in the original stitching to indicate that the book was originally made up in four gatherings, the first of twelve leaves, the second of ten, the third of ten, and the fourth of six. Although the book is of the size called quarto, the method of printing must have been page by page, so it is doubtful that each sheet was folded twice in the usual quarto manner, but more probable that it was printed four pages to a sheet of paper approximately 9⅛ by 14 inches, which was folded once. The volume is printed throughout by the xylographic method, that is to say, each page of text is printed from one wood-block which was carved by hand. Along the inner margins of some pages are vertical lines which were made by the inked edge of the block, and the grain of the wood has caused striations to appear...

Legal Ethics

...EN BANC A.C. No. 1037. December 14, 1998 VICTORIANO P. RESURRECCION, complainant, vs. ATTY. CIRIACO C. SAYSON, Respondent. D E C I S I O N PER CURIAM: To say that lawyers must at all times uphold and respect the law is to state the obvious, but such statement can never be overemphasized. Considering that, "of all classes and professions, [lawyers are] most sacredly bound to uphold the law,"1 it is imperative that they live by the law. Accordingly, lawyers who violate their oath and engage in deceitful conduct have no place in the legal profession. In a Complaint-Affidavit, Victoriano P. Resurrecion charged Respondent Atty. Ciriaco C. Sayson with acts constituting "malpractice, deceit and gross misconduct in his office and a violation of his duties and oath as a lawyer." The Complaint arose from a homicide through reckless imprudence case, in which Complainant Resurrecion was the defendant and Respondent Sayson was the counsel for the offended party, Mr. Armando Basto Sr. The complainant alleged that, pursuant to the amicable settlement previously reached by the parties, he gave P2,500 to the respondent who, however, never gave the money to his client. Thus, the complainant was compelled to give anotherP2,500 to Mr. Basto as settlement of the case. The complainant then demanded the return of the money from respondent, to no avail. Thus, the Complaint for Disbarment. The records show that the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) conducted several hearings on the matter;...

Goldilocks History

...Goldilocks: From family fairy tale to global phenomenon When Filipinos think of Goldilocks, a curious blonde girl and her three bear companions are not usually what come to mind. For Filipino families around the world, Goldilocks is more than a character in a fairy tale, but is a delectable and cultural fact of life. The most famous and largest bakeshop/restaurant based in the Philippines is expanding beyond the book to better serve its loyal and growing customers. For nearly 50 years, Goldilocks has provided unique, quality Filipino meals and baked goods to thousands worldwide. With eight locations in Northern California, three in Southern California, and one in Las Vegas, Goldilocks is known to Filipino communities all over the West Coast. It has also made its mark as a global brand, selling goods and products to markets internationally, including Asia and Canada. Today, the company continues to reach out to its growing customer base at home and abroad, while sticking true to its Filipino roots. “Fairy tale” beginnings The story of Goldilocks began where most fairy tales start: with family. In 1966, two close half-Filipino/Chinese sisters, Milagros Yee and Clarita Go, and their sister-in-law, Doris, were baking sweets in their humble Makati City apartment to provide for hospital patients and family friends, who were their first dedicated customers. Nicknamed “The Two Moms,” the sisters were known for their ambitious work ethic and special homemade recipes—especially...

Analysis of Robert and Clara Schumann's Music

...9. Autumn 1835-June 1836 This work was written to fulfill Robert’s dream of composing something for Moscheles in homage and consequently dedicated to him. In the autumn of 1835, Robert made Moscheles personal acquaintance who looked at this work (which at the time was originally intended as a concerto without orchestra) and frankly commented that it “did not fulfill the requirements of a concerto thought it possessed the characteristic attributes of a grand sonata in the manner of Beethoven and Weber.” It follows that Robert reformed and renamed this work as a sonata to better suit its character. Chissell also points out that ‘In subject-matter, however, the Sonata is wholly Clara’s. During its composition Schumann had faced up to the truth of his love for her, and had broken off his engagement with Ernestine, which would account for the music’s tone of high romantic tumult. But more specifically the slow movement is a set of variations on an ‘Andantino de Clara Weick’ bringing her ‘motto’ theme, the falling figure of 5 notes, out into the open…This theme generates the greater part of the sonata. Little else in Robert’s piano music is quite a monothematic as this work.’ Clara’s motto theme of 5 falling notes, C-B-A-G-F Sonata in F minor, Op. 14 10. 1836 Learning from Liszt that plans were afoot to erect a monument of one of his idols, the late Beethoven, Robert composed this work as a means of raising money towards this end. Accordingly, he was inspired...

Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboardand violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. At 17, he was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg, but grew restless and travelled in search of a better position, always composing abundantly. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized. He was survived by his wife Constanze and two sons. Mozart learned voraciously from others, and developed a brilliance and maturity of style that encompassed the light and graceful along with the dark and...

Security Issues and Principles Research Paper

...SECURITY ISSUES AND PRINCIPLES STEGANOGRAPHY [n. stə nóggrəfi] Steganography (literally meaning covered writing) dates back to ancient Greece, where common practices consisted of etching messages in wooden tablets and covering them with wax, and tattooing a shaved messenger's head, letting his hair grow back, and then shaving it again when he arrived at his contact point. Steganography comes from the Greek steganos, or "covered," and graphie, or "writing". Synonymous to abstraction, the art and science of hiding information by embedding messages within other, seemingly harmless messages. Steganography takes cryptography a step farther by hiding an encrypted message so that no one suspects it exists. Ideally, anyone scanning your data will fail to know it contains encrypted data by replacing bits of useless or unused data in regular computer files (such as graphics, sound, text, HTML, or even floppy disks ) with bits of different, invisible information. This hidden information can be plain text, cipher text, or even images. Steganography sometimes is used when encryption is not permitted or, more commonly, is used to supplement encryption. An encrypted file may still hide information using steganography, so even if the encrypted file is deciphered, the hidden message is not seen. In modern digital steganography, data is first encrypted by the usual means and then inserted, using a special algorithm, into redundant (that is, provided but unneeded) data that is part of a particular...
