What is a Reader?
When I first began reading at a young age, I would read the text, but I would not know exactly what I just read. It was sort of like traveling out of town, but not knowing exactly where I am going. I think that a reader is any person who is able to read and comprehend any form of text. This goes for people who can read languages other than English.
I think that there are two types of readers; readers who reads, basically, if they have to, and readers who enjoy reading as a hobby. Stereotypically, an avid reader might have certain personality traits. For example, that person may be more conservative. Averill is a Spanish immerging school that is based off of the 50/50 curriculum. This means that Spanish speaking students learn English as a second language and English speaking students learn Spanish as a second language. In this essay, I will be discussing Averill’s community and school demographics, the community surroundings, and how my initial impressions change based on this information. There are a little over 300 students who attend Averill. As of 2014, 40.8% of the students are African American; making them the majority in the school.() This is compared to the 54.7% population of white people as the majority in the community.() White students only made up 23.3% of Averill’s population. The Hispanic population in the school was at 24.6% compared to the community that had a 10.2% Hispanic population. The other the other 11% of Averill’s students were composed of Asian, Indian, Pacific Islander, and Multi-racial individuals. These resources are generally available for after school. The closest library to Averill is 7-10 minutes away from the school. The name of the library is the Capitol Area District of South Lansing and they have after school programs. One of the programs is a homework workshop, where college students come in to help students work on homework from 5pm-7pm. There is a YMCA and Boys and Girls club that are each about five minutes away from Averill. For teachers who like to have field days or field trips, there are two parks/ playgrounds, a few museums, and even a zoo that are nearby that are accessible to the
