...Assignment 1: Critique Lionel Shriver is a seasoned journalist who has written for many publications including Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. In her article on essential mums’ website, “Do we need to lighten up about obesity,” Shriver claims that vanity - “desire to look, and feel, more attractive” (Shriver, para 7, 2013) – is the ultimate reason for anyone to want to slim down. However, in Shriver’s entire article, she does little to substantiate her stand with concrete evidence. Hence, although I agree with Shriver’s stand that “most people slim down out of vanity” (para 9, 2013), I believe that Shriver could have backed up her claim with more concrete proof. I agree with Shriver’s stand regarding vanity as the main reason to slim down, where “mere aesthetics provide more powerful inspiration” (para 16, 2013). Despite the existence of other genuine concerns for obesity such as health issues, cosmetic reasons gives people a better motivation as it is a visible form of gratification as compared to medical reasons, whereby “only once an unpleasant ailment materializes … does it generate any serious motivational power” (Shriver, para 10, 2013). Furthermore, the media has always reinforced the idea of looking good in society. Chubbier people are rarely casted, and even if there are exceptions, these exceptions are almost never the given the lead roles. This shows that the media, which has an extensive reach into the hearts of the public, has long been propagating...

The Superbowl is typically the most watched event on American television every year. However, the NFL has recently come across increased intense scrutiny by former players and the media for their lack of action towards preventing concussions. The NFL is often compared to a gladiator arena, where players push through serious injuries and perform spectacular feats in front of a roaring and bloodthirsty crowd. Many people look at professional football players and forget that they are still human. They are not invulnerable to pain, and they are not immune to the side effects that come with playing such a violent game. Former players who played in the 1980’s and 1990’s played with rules that allowed dangerous helmet-to-helmet hits, and in a society that expected them to play through injuries, such as concussions. Players at particular positions are at an additional risk for concussions, with 18.2% of defensive backs suffering concussions sometime in their career (Pellman, Viano). Players that suffered repeat concussions were found to have a much greater risk of “increased neuronal vulnerability”, and that there is an increase in the likelihood of “recurrent concussions with each successive previous injury.” (Guskiewicz). Former players are experiencing increased rates of brain...

...Bernard Charles Ms. Winkler English 1002 A Pale Blue Eye I never thought in my wildest dreams that someone would be so anxious to dismantle an old man because of his blue eyes, especially when the old man never did any wrongdoing to anyone. Do not ever underestimate the power of darkness because you could be the next one in line? The Tell Tale Heart is a well-known demoniac story by Edgar Allan Poe, where the devil played a big role by inspiring the narrator to engage in such devilish acts. First, the devil injected the idea into the narrator’s brain and made him believe there was only one way out: to kill the old man. The narrator said,” it hunted me day and night,” but it is unclear what relationship was between the old man and the narrator. May be the old man could be a father figure, but it is unknown in the story. Moreover, the narrator became very creepy by his own insanity. The narrator stated,” he had never wronged me, and he never insulted me,” so would he destroy the old man when he had never done anything unjust to him? The power of darkness kept whispering to the narrator to continue on his long journey. The old man never paid any attention to the narrator because it seemed that there was an overwhelming amount of trust between the two. Otherwise, the old man would have felt his death was coming. The narrator’s strategy seemed to work very well with the old man because he treated the old man nicely...

...their business partners. Recently, virtualization has become a prevalent and widely accepted way to reduce operating costs and increase the reliability of enterprise IT. In addition, concepts such as grid computing make possible a whole new class of analytics, data crunching, and business intelligence tasks that were previously cost- and time-prohibitive. Along with these technology changes there have also been fundamental changes in how markets work, with the speed of innovation and product introductions increasing at an unprecedented rate. Taken alongside the wide acceptance of Software as a Service (SaaS) offerings, all of these concepts have inspired the latest turn in the IT infrastructure challenge: cloud computing. Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides a flexible, cost-effective, scalable, and easy to use cloud computing platform for businesses of all sizes. What is “Cloud Computing”? Cloud computing has become one of the most discussed IT paradigms of recent years. It builds on many of the advances in the IT industry over the past decade and presents significant opportunities for businesses to shorten time to market and reduce costs by consuming shared...

...Annual Worth Analysis Basics So far we learned PW and FW as comparison tools AW analysis is said to be the best comparison tool. AW value is the equivalent uniform annual worth of all estimated receipts and disbursements during the life cycle of the project or alternative AW value is equivalent to the PW and FW values at the MARR for n years AW = PW (A/P, i, n) = FW (A/F , i, n) where n is the number of years for equal-service comparison. When all cash flow estimates are converted to an AW value, this value applies for: every year of the life cycle for each additional life cycle The prime advantage of AW analysis is: 1 2 AW value has to be calculated for only one life cycle not necessary to use the LCM of lives as it is for PW and FW . IE 347 Week 5 Industrial Engineering Dept. 1/8 Dr.Serhan Duran (METU) Annual Worth Analysis Basics When alternatives being compared have different lives, the AW method makes the assumption that: 1 2 3 The service provided by alternatives will be needed for at least the LCM of years or more The selected alternative will be repeated over each life cycle of the LCM in exactly the same manner The cash flow estimates will be the same in every life cycle Example Eric Forman, a project engineer is assigned to start up a new office in Wisconsin. Two lease options are available: Location A Location B First cost, $ $-15,000 $-18,000 Annual lease cost, $ per year -3,500 -3,100 Deposit return, $ 1,000 2,000 Lease term...

...must consider a branding strategy that will create a niche in the market place. Branding strategies are critical to a company because the niche it establishes the company’s image, fosters a competitive advantage, and develop sales. AW Interior Design will use the umbrella branding strategy to create the domestic and global product. According to Iacobucci (2012), the umbrella strategy “attaches the same brand name to all of its products (p. 70).” This strategy will to help showcase the touch screen control panel strictly under AW Interior Design’s, the brand name for the Virtual Angela System, the new product. Offering the Virtual Angela System by AW Interior Design uses name recognition to start with a higher-level of public perception, streamline advertising, reduce costs, and build greater financial outcomes positioning the product for greater competition in the market place domestically and globally (Iacobucci, 2012, pp. 70-71). This approach is similar to that of Johnson & Johnson. This company has a family of five companies with products that carry the same brand name and increases awareness in the marketplace. “Examples are Johnson Baby Powder, Johnson Baby Shampoo, Acuvue contact lenses and Listerine”, (www.jnj.com). Since AW Interior Design has created a strong, favorable brand locally, the global strategy will include using the...

...variables and noted down their respective probability distributions. The case requires developing a simulation of 50 sample points of Average Worth (AW) at the MARR of 20% and selects the most suitable alternative. Question-a: I used Excel Random Number Generation (RNG) function to generate 50 sample values for each random variables: Capital investment, Annual Revenues, Useful life, and Salvage Value according to their respective probability distribution, mean and standard deviation values. The results are reported in Appendix-A. The value of AW was then calculated based on PW values for each 50 set of data points for both alternatives. The mean and standard deviation values for both alternatives as follows: Alternative-A: Full Automation MEAN: $54,736 STANDARD DEVIATION: $27,420 Alternative-B: Semi-Automation MEAN: $56,491 STANDARD DEVIATION: $7,248 Based on the results, both alternatives will produce in near similar amount of AW. Under alternative-A, the mean value of AW is $54,736 while under alternative B, the mean value of AW is $56,491. However, the Standard Deviation is much lower in case of alternative-B i.e. to employ semi-automation. Because Standard Deviation measures the variance, the alternative –B is preferable as it will offer relatively less volatility but at the same time will generate the same amount of AW over the alternative-A. Question-b: In order to check the reliability of my conclusion, I ran the same simulation with the sample points of 500...
