Text: “Core Concepts in Health”. Insel and Roth, 11th, 12th, 13th, or 14 edition. Any of the editions will work so find something that your budget can handle. [Use the chapter reading headings in your Course Descriptive Outline as a guide…a few chapters are re-ordered depending upon the edition you have]. We will be using a lot of OER material.

Course Description:
HE 35 is a contemporary course which will promote desirable health attitude and practices. Topics considered will include the following: mental health and emotional health, stress, nutrition, fitness, sexuality, communicable diseases, cancer, drugs and alcohol abuse, death and dying, and tobacco use. (AA, CSU, UC)

Course Objectives: (Learning Goals)
To define, understand, discuss, and identify the connections between personal health, individual behaviors, family background, and environmental issues that impact the overall health and wellness of the human body.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to communicate the difference between Aerobic and Anaerobic exercise. Students will be able to give examples of both Aerobic and anaerobic exercises. Students will be able to identify the basic energy sources and expenditures for both.

Students will develop specific knowledge related to the interaction of family history, addictive behaviors, and the critical aspects of the immune system.

Students will be able to develop the application of a strategy that encourages societal adoption and active healthy lifestyles, and commitment to lifelong learning.

Grading Policy:
6 exams *All Lab Activities must
5 lab activities must have references
1 Term Paper and be in MLA format.

Examination Policy:
All exams are mandatory! The exams will include multiple choice, and true/false answers. Each exam will cover material presented in class, and will be reviewed prior to each exam. You must use a Scantron for each exam. Scantrons can be purchased at the bookstore or library. MISSED EXAMS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO BE MADE UP unless a verified Doctor’s excuse is presented. Cheating on exam and/or plagiarizing will lead to a “Zero” for the test/assignment, and may lead to dismissal from the class.

General Class Information:
Drops: You have two weeks to drop and still get your money back. If you elect to do so, be sure to drop yourself. Do not assume you have been automatically dropped. This is your responsibility. The last day to drop this with a “W” (student initiated) will be announced. Assignments & Make-ups: Assignments are due when noted in the syllabus schedule. Extra time will be allowed only with extenuating circumstances. Subject to Change: I reserve the right to change this syllabus with proper notice.
