In this meeting, closed to the press, researchers reportedly held Vedan responsible for eighty to ninety percent of the industrial pollution found in water samples. IENR’s Bui Ta Long said that water samples collected from February-April 2008 indicated that Vedan Vietnam discharged more than 100,000 cubic meters of waste water into the river every month. The area impacted by Vedan-sourced pollution extended for ten kilometers along the Thi Vai river. The river in this area was heavily polluted. The water there was black, stank and was deadly to all kinds of fish. More people are becoming health conscious and are interested in what they're consuming down to the ingredients used. A health trend that is occurring and taking over in all aspects in health and our not only food related. Companies are becoming aware and are taking note of these changes to this “self-care” health market. ...Karla A. Esguerra Professor Camille Ocampo SOCI 3103 POWER STRUCTURE IN THE TRANSNATIONAL WIFE & HOUSEHUSBAND FAMILY IN A RURAL SETTING I. INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study The family is the one major sphere of capitalist society in which labour replacement services can be absorbed without payment-women pick up the burden unpaid (Engels 8). This notes the existence of patriarch societies in the past decades that gave women no power in the family. The patriarchism was brought into the country during the Spanish regime (Medina 174).In the Philippines, men are metaphorically referred to as “pillar of the home” signifying both the metaphorical importance of the man who makes the home stand and the material contributions he is expected to make to the family (Parrenas 57). This was the traditional power structure. As the marital relationship evolves, it is interesting to know the roles of the women, specifically the transnational wives as a subject of the power structure nowadays. The modern Filipina wife, being more enlightened and more knowledgeable of what is going on around her is no longer confined to home. In her desire to help uplift the economic conditions of her family, she has extended herself to management of the farm and other productive enterprises (Medina 174). It was also noted that women outnumbered men in international migration, in October 1991, 59.4% of overseas workers were females (Medina). As of 2012 according to the National Statistics...

...For exclusive use at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 2015 9-694-046 REV: MARCH 25, 2008 JANICE H. HAMMOND Barilla SpA (A) Giorgio Maggiali was becoming increasingly frustrated. As director of logistics for the world’s largest pasta producer, Barilla SpA1, he was acutely aware of the growing burden that demand fluctuations imposed on the company’s manufacturing and distribution system. Since his appointment in 1988 as director of logistics, he had been trying to make headway on an innovative idea proposed by Brando Vitali, who had served as Barilla’s director of logistics before Maggiali. The idea, which Vitali called Just-in-Time Distribution (JITD), was modeled after the popular “Just-InTime” manufacturing concept. In essence, Vitali proposed that, rather than follow the traditional practice of delivering product to Barilla’s distributors on the basis of whatever orders those distributors placed with the company, Barilla’s own logistics organization would instead specify the “appropriate” delivery quantities—those that would more effectively meet end-consumer’s needs yet would also more evenly distribute the workload on Barilla’s manufacturing and logistics systems. For two years Maggiali, a strong supporter of Vitali’s proposal, had tried to implement the idea, but now, in the spring of 1990, little progress had been made. It seemed that Barilla’s customers were simply unwilling to give up their authority to place orders as they pleased; some...
