Cohendet Introduction: In 1994, Wernerfelt received an award for the best paper of the decade in Strategic Management Review (A resource-based view of the firm, 1984). Considering the fortune of the article among practicing managers (Wernerfelt, 1995), he admitted that such a fortune had been leveraged by the 1990 article of Prahalad and Hamel in Harvard Business Review (“The Core Competence of the Corporation”). Directly addressed to people in management and strategy, this article was clearly prescriptive as to the best way to set winning strategies for the firm, especially as to diversification and the abusive use of SBUs (Strategic Business Units) in highly decentralized profit centres. “In the 1990s, top executives will be judged on their ability to identify, cultivate, and exploit the core competencies that make growth possible”. Since the 1990s, the resource based view (RBV) and the core competence approach (CCA) became very attractive for many researchers and consultants. The paper argues that even though an Islamic money market operates in an interest-free environment and trades Shariah-compliant instruments, many of the risks associated with conventional money markets, including interest-rate risks are relevant. The empirical evidence, based on Malaysian data, points to Islamic money market profit rates/yields that are highly correlated and move in tandem with conventional money market rates. Given the dynamics of fund flows and cross-linkages, an IIMM operating within a dual banking system cannot sterilize itself from interest-rate risks. In fact, the paper argues that such an IIMM may actually enhance interest-rate risk transmission to the Islamic banking sector, by providing additional channels of transmission. On the other hand, Tenet Healthcare Corporation is a competitor to HCA, but has been slower to develop in the profitable ways of HCA. Tenet has taken a diversification approach recently in the urgent care business. They have recently opened 23 urgent care facilities, the first company in the hospital sector to do so.
