Alex is now in K2, he will be turning six on the 11th December 2014. Alex comes from a family of four: his Singaporean mum and dad, his eight year old brother and himself. Alex joined our school when he was four years old. He followed through pre-school education with three different teachers throughout the three years.
The following is a description of Alex in the K2 classroom setting on a typical day. Alex is a very quiet boy, he seldom talks to the people in the environment. While waiting for the classroom doors to open in the morning, Alex stands in line and observes his friends without communicating with anyone. When a teacher greets him, he seldom replies, but if he does, it is a very soft voice that repeats “good morning.” Alex has a very deep voice that tends to break as he speaks.
During lessons, I used to feel that Alex’s attention was drifting away. Hence, I used to pause my lessons from time to time to ask Alex questions related to the topic of discussion and I was amazed at the replies he would give. He would reply to my question with a clear and concise explanation. On top of that, he would provide us with new knowledge/information regarding the topic. He exhibited having deep knowledge in most areas especially in Science. When praised by the teacher or his friends for sharing that new piece of information with the class, Alex would show no reaction and/or …show more content…
It stresses on the interactions between developing people and the culture in which they live. “Vygotsky believed that the tools a specific culture used had a dramatic impact on the growth and development of the children within that culture. Tools such as books, computers, stories and other traditions helped instill and teach children what the norms of that specific culture were, as well as what is expected of them as a member of that culture” (Samantha, 2011). For each culture, what they are doing is the norm, but when compared to another culture, two are entirely different from one another.
