In the nursing profession specifically, patient quality and safety outcomes are greatly affected based on the type of degree achieved by the nurse. Research has shown that Baccalaureate prepared nurses have been found to provide exceptional care due to advanced schooling and the requirement of additional credits as opposed to a nurse with an Associates Degree.

There is much debate on the difference in quality of care that will be provided to patients based on the degree obtained by the nurse. As healthcare is an ever-changing field with improvements constantly being discovered, it is important for nurses to achieve the most education possible as well as additional on the job training as changes are implemented over time. Patient care is becoming more complex than ever and it is vital that nurses are being hired with proper skills to provide necessary care. BSN programs prepare nurses with additional skills in leadership, evidence-based practice, case management, health promotion, as well as population health, which are competencies that are not touched on in Associate programs (Warshawsky et al., 2015). It was also found to be true that by increasing the amount of care proided by BSNs to 80%, readmission rates would be significantly lowered as well as decrease the length of patient stay (Yakusheva, Lindrooth, Weiss, 2014). Ultimately these outcomes would save hospital costs that would more than off-set expenses for increasing the number of baccalaureate-prepared nurses in hospital

Baccalaureate Prepared Nurses

...Baccalaureate Prepared Nurses April 7, 2014 Baccalaureate Prepared Nurses “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” Nelson Mandela The profession of nursing has always been an evolving and demanding job. With each year the responsibilities of nurses grow and the demands for higher education increases. There are several ways to obtain a nursing license in the United States: a diploma program, associates program, and a baccalaureate degree. Even though the associate degree is a popular route to gain access to the NCLEX there has been much research revolving around the preparedness of associate degree nurses verse baccalaureate degree nurses. Both associates in nursing and baccalaureate in nursing give a student the sought after nursing license, however research shows there is a vast difference between the ASN and the BSN. The ASN programs are found primarily at community colleges and the curriculum is about 2 years in length. The ASN suffices all subjects related to the NCLEX and prepares students to pass to obtain their licensure. The BSN program is a four -year program that usually takes place in the 4 year colleges. They too are prepared to take the NCLEX, however they are required to gain knowledge deeper in the subject than the ASN. “The review of literature which was presented tends to support the ideology that baccalaureate degree prepared nurses are more proficient in the use of research, leadership, theoretical...

Baccalaureate Prepared Nurses Versus Associate Prepared Nurses

...Baccalaureate prepared nurses versus Associate prepared nurses Shirley Jones Baccalaureate prepared nurses versus Associate prepared nurses What are the differences between baccalaureates prepared nurses and associates prepared nurses? This has been a topic for discussion for many years. Prior to the modern practice of nursing, the sick were taken care of by the less-than-desirable population such as “sinners, saints or mothers”. (L. Hover, lecture notes, June 2013). Times have changed since the days when prostitutes and women of ill repute or members of religious orders tended to the sick. (L. Hover, lecture notes, June 2013). In today’s nursing, no major differences are noted between the cognitive abilities of students in baccalaureate and associate degree programs (Davis-Martin, 1990). Baccalaureate nurses are generally seen as being better prepared for a wide range of nursing competencies and are seen as performing in the professional role in which they are prepared. Associate degree nurses are seen as performing well in the technical role for which they have been prepared, as well as in some leadership roles for which they were not originally prepared (Davis-Martin, 1990). One difference in competencies between the Associate Degree Nurse (ADN) and the Baccalaureate Degree Nurse (BSN) is the time spent in the formal education process. The associate prepared nurse usually obtains their degree from a community college or junior college whereas the BSN...

Do some of these differences surprise you? Were you aware that the BON had these differences in competencies in writing? In patient-centered care, the patients are actively involved in their care and the services they receive are focused on their individual needs. Patients’ involvement and shared decision making promote adherence and lead to improved outcome (Hinds, 2013). Nursing curricula include patient-centered care strategies in order to prepare and empower nurses about this level of care. According to the Texas Board of Nursing (2010), with regards to the provider of patient-centered care, diploma and associate degree nursing (ADN) prepare the nurses particularly to provide safe, compassionate bedside patient care in the hospital setting. A nurse with a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) is prepared for greater orientation to community health, public health issues, leadership and management in addition to what a registered nurse holding ADN or diploma is required to do. Comparing Competencies of the Associate Versus Baccalaureate Degree Prepared Nurse

...Comparing Competencies of the Associate Versus Baccalaureate Degree Prepared Nurse The American Association of Nursing (AACN) defines nursing as “the protection, promotion, and organization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations”. (American Nurses Association;) Nurses receive education in the United States by completing a baccalaureate degree (BSN), associate degree (ADN) or diploma program. Graduation from one of these programs allow the nurse to be eligible to write the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), which nursing graduates must pass in order to receive initial licensure (ANA). Once the nurse has achieved licensure, they earn the title of Registered Nurse (RN); little differentiation exists in terms of entry-level practice, so one might wonder why a nursing student would choose a baccalaureate degree program over an associate or diploma program. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the difference in competencies between the ADN and BSN, and how those differences might influence the practice of the nurse. The paper will not discuss the diploma prepared RN because “diploma programs have diminished steadily-to 4% of all basic RN programs in 2006…” (American Nurses Association, 2011) Describing Competency In order to illustrate the difference in competencies...

...Educational Preparation of Registered Nurses: Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) vs. Baccalaureate Prepared Nurses (BSN) Donna Rodriguez Grand Canyon University Professional Dynamics NRS 430V Jayme Goodner September 28, 2013 Educational Preparation of Registered Nurses: Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) vs. Baccalaureate Prepared Nurses (BSN) The purpose of this paper is to discuss the educational preparation of the Associate Degree nurse (ADN) versus the Baccalaureate prepared Nurse (BSN). This will be accomplished by first exploring the differences in competencies between nurses based on degree level and with the use of a patient care example to describe the difference in the nursing approach based on formal educational preparation. Currently there are two paths to obtaining a registered nursing certification the ADN versus the BSN. The reasons for the development of the ADN nursing programs were simple. It was a matter of supply and demand, and a necessary solution to a problem. In the year of 1951, after the war a huge nursing shortage existed. It was at that time that a nurse educator named Mildred Montag made a proposition to prepare nurse technicians in 2-year associate degree community colleges. A 5-year study of ADN graduates noted preparation was successful, as the nurses passed their exams for licensure and demonstrated the ability to practice nursing with competence (Creasia & Friberg, 2011). ...Competencies between Nurses Prepared at Associate-Degree versus the Baccalaureate-Degree Level in Nursing The nursing profession has multiple entry levels which are diploma, Associate (ADN) degree and Baccalaureate (BSN) degree (Lane & Kohlenberg, 2010). Historically, The Bachelor of Science in nursing degree was established in 1909, whereas the Associate degree was established in 1958 (Hood & Leddy, 2006). BSN students are required to attend 4 years of college education, mostly given at colleges or universities, and on the other hand ADN students are required to attend 3 years of a community college nursing program (AANC, 2011). These variations in the years of education create differences in competences between BSN and ADN. Some variations include critical thinking, decision making, problem solving, and ethical reasoning. Both, ADN and BSN prepared nurses sit for the same licensure examination (Taylor, 2008). According to Lane & Kohlenberg (2010), “Baccalaureate education provides nurses with critical thinking for complex patients and opportunities for leadership, professional mobility, and advancement, this does not mean associate degree nurses are unimportant” (p. 220). Associate degree nurses demonstrate the critical role in nursing (Lane & Kohlenberg, 2010).They continued by adding that through building onto the fundamentals of Associate degree education, emphasis on research, social and physical sciences, and management of community health; The Baccalaureate education provides...

Differences in Competencies Between Nurses Prepared at the Associate Degree Level Versus the Baccalaureate Degree Level 1

...Health care is a field that is changing dramatically. Many practicing nurses have various degrees in nursing like Associate Degree, Diploma, Baccalaureate and Master’s degree. Due to the varying levels of education and training, differences exist between the nurses prepared with an Associate degree (ADN) when compared to those nurses who have trained in a Baccalaureate degree (BSN). Though nurses getting these degrees have their differences in preparation, nurses earning these degrees have adequate theoretical and clinical learning experiences. The license qualifying examination for many states- National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) - does not differentiate between ADN and BSN degree prepared nurses and allows nurses with both degrees to take the licensing examination after completion of the degree regardless of the educational background of the applicant. The differences in competencies between nurses prepared with an ADN compared to those prepared with a BSN include the quality of training and duration of the course. From research shown in many well published studies and from my own practice, I feel that such differences in training create various approaches to patient management in similar clinical situations and hence do have a variable effect on patient outcomes. Nurses with an ADN or a BSN have distinctive differences in their preparation to get their degree. Nurses with an ADN obtain their degree through attending community colleges, nursing schools, or other...

Grand Canyon University follows the guidelines from the American Association of College of Nursing (AACN) for the curriculum regarding the nursing education, including the RN-BSN program. (Grand Canyon University College of Nursing Philosophy, 2011) The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) fact sheet (Creating a More Highly Qualified Nursing Workforce, October 2012) talks about how baccalaureate nurses have more positive outcomes than an associate degree nurse. This refers to not only lower mortality rates but other factors such as medication errors. This shows that a BSN thinks outside of the box and treats the patient as a whole The focus of a patient, while hospitalized, is that they just want to get better. They want to know who brings their medication and who makes their bed. They don’t get to see the educational background of each nurse that cares for them. To them a nurse is a nurse. What the focus of a baccalaureate nurse caring for them is to treat the patient as a whole, not just the person who gives medications. Associate degree programs have been around since 1952. The ADN focus is concerned with the technical aspects of nursing. The focus is meeting the needs of the person through...
