f you look around the world, there is diverse cultures represented. America is no different, as we are known for being the melting pot country of the world. If you look around here in America, you see many cultures that follow Bacon’s idea of four idols, “idol of the tribe, cave, marketplace, and theater”.(Jacobus 592) These idols represent different things to many cultures. As a whole America, is progressively moving towards representing all four of these idols in everyday life. One of Bacon’s idols mentioned is the Idol of the Tribe. This idol, “[has] their foundation in human nature itself”(Jacobus 594). This means people are more likely to follow human nature such as exaggeration. In our culture, we see celebrities exaggerating photos with photo shop. This in turn makes the rest of our culture, because of human nature, follow these people and try to emulate them. …show more content…
This idol is the idol of individual man. The meaning for this idol is that each person has a different outlook on a variety of topics. One idea is education today. Some think of education as a fun, challenging; however, others in today’s culture think as education as boring and a waste of their time because they would rather be working with their hands. This outlook plays into college culture today, one individual may attend college for the learning aspect, while another student may just go straight into the workforce from high school because education is not of their list of important things. In today’s culture, we see words having many different meanings. This is an example of the idol of the Marketplace. When words have different meanings, it can cause confusion and lead to agruments. I think we can see this example in today’s politics. We see politics’ words being twisted into different meaning then it leads to arguments within political parties and the country as
