It is time the American public hears all sides of the story. We need to make a decision. Sixteen mass murders occurred in 2012. The last straw was twenty innocent children gun down while attending school. There are many things that the public needs to look into so we can help congress make a decision on gun control. It is up to us the American public to let our congress men and women know how we feel and how we want gun control to go. While firearms have played an important part of the American life, gun control has never been an important legislative topic. Urban crime and handgun use got an increasing amount of public attention after WWI, (Beman/1926) and this period produced many local and state legislations, as well as more debate about the federal role in gun regulation. By 1924 more than a dozen federal firearms control bills, most regulating interstate commerce of handguns were before congress. The principal booster for a federal role in gun control was President Roosevelt’s first Attorney General Hommer Cummings. It was his justice department that was the moving force behind the National Firearms Act of 1934, and that attached a provision for federal registration of all hand guns to the Anti-Machinegun measure sent to congress in 1934. When the handgun registration was deleted from the bill the Justice Department continued to introduce handgun registration proposals and fight for them throughout the 1930s. The fire arms control campaign of the 1930s resulted in two federal legislations: the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Federal Firearms Act of 1938. Neither law reflect the scope of Attorney General Cummings ambition, but the two laws established a role for the federal government in gun control, and these laws were the immediate precursors of the gun control act of 1968.(Zimring,1975) National Firearms
