...of Georgia [pic] Research in the area of user interface design for computer-based learning environments (Jones, 1993) found that screen and interface design should be considered at the same time during the design and development process. Additionally, the research produced a list of interface design concepts and a corresponding list of guidelines for implementing those concepts. The concepts presented in this paper are broad issues to be considered during the design and development process. The guidelines that are associaàted with the concepts are intended to be flexible, and allow for the creativity of the individual designer, and the needs of a particular project. Names for some of the concepts were taken from an analysis of the literature in computer-based instruction (CBI), computer-based learning environments, and human computer interaction (HCI). Names for the other concepts were emic categories generated by the participants in the study. The guidelines were derived through an analysis of the literature, an analysis of six commercially produced computer-based learning environments, and interviews with the designers and developers of the six computer-based learning environments. Further research is being conducted to determine how designers and developers can implement these guidelines. This is more than justified by traffic accident statistics, as each year around 1.2 million people die due to road traffic accidents. For these reasons safety remains a core value of Volvo Cars. This paper presents some of the latest active safety developments within Volvo Cars. Rear-end collisions are common accident scenarios and a common cause of these accidents is driver distraction and thus not reacting in time. No vehicle system is a substitute for the most important safety feature in any vehicle: the driver. However, Volvo is harnessing innovative technologies to help alert drivers to avoid potential collisions and reduce the potential impact speed when a collision cannot be avoided. One of those systems is Collision Warning with Auto Brake where the area in front of the vehicle is continuously monitored with the help of a longrange radar and a forward-sensing wide-angle camera fitted in front of the interior rear-view mirror. A warning and brake support will be provided for collisions with other vehicles, both moving and stationary. Art Spiegelman’s Maus first and perhaps most forcefully established the connection between archives and comics. His groundbreaking work documenting his father’s experience in WWII Poland, where he survived internment in Auschwitz, is a visual narrative based on oral testimony that consistently heightens our awareness of visual, written, and oral archives, and where they interact, overlap, or get transposed one into the other. Hillary Chute recounts and interprets her collaboration with Spiegelman in the process of assembling MetaMaus, a book compiling interviews and archival materials on the making of Maus. MetaMaus, argues Chute, reflects the tension between different kinds of extant archives—oral, written, photographic—and the cross-discursive work of (re)building new archives that motivates Maus. Purchase of big ticket items such as appliances, furniture, autos, and a home follow a line of investigation before the decision to purchase is implemented. The purchase of a home is one of the largest investments made in a lifetime, and uses many factoring influences before purchase. This paper will show how economics plays into the decision of the purchase. One of the first areas to consider is what the trade-off will be in purchasing a home versus the benefit of renting. What we need to consider is if purchasing a home and providing more space, and living closer to shopping and schools, justifies the added cost in utilities and maintenance of a home. The opportunity costs are another factor to consider. We can vacation closer to home instead of the trip to Europe we had hoped to take. Another option would be to maintain our existing auto instead of buying a new car. We need to research the marginal costs we would need to pay out. These include the amount of down payment, closing costs, taxes, insurance fees, and moving expenses. If we rent a larger apartment, we won’t have those costs, but we also wouldn’t have the benefit of ownership/write-off of interests in loan and property taxes.
