Introduction
A Bank is a financial institution and a financial intermediary that accepts deposits and channels those deposits into lending activities, either directly or through capital markets. A bank connects customers that have capital deficits to customers with capital surpluses.
There are different types of bank in Bangladesh. Like- * Central Bank * Commercial Bank * Industrial Bank * Co-Operative Bank * Savings Bank etc
Generally when we use the term “Bank” that time actually it means the commercial bank. The main job of the commercial bank is to collect the money from customers as deposit and give other customers money as loan. The commercial bank gives interest on deposit money to the customer and receives interest on loan money to the customers. The difference between these two interest rates is the main source of bank’s income.
In Bangladesh the commercial banking sector dominates the financial sector. In Bangladesh there is one central bank which is “Bangladesh Bank”. There are four state owned commercial banks. They are- Agrani Bank, Janata Bank, Rupali Bank, Sonali Bank. Besides this, there is also good number of private commercial bank in Bangladesh. Such as-Prime Bank, One Bank, Mercantile Bank, Bank Asia, South East Bank, IFIC Bank, Dhaka Bank, United Commercial Bank, Dutch Bangla Bank and so on. There are also some foreign Banks which are operating in our country. They are- Citi Bank, HSBC, Standard Chartered Bank, Commercial Bank of Ceylon, State bank of India, Habib Bank Limited, National Bank of Pakistan, Woori Bank, Bank Alfalah and ICICI bank.

Bank Performance Valuation

...The UBPR report, which covers the operations of a bank, provides a very useful tool for the management of the financial firm, and thus do us a great favor to have a deep understanding of the financial firm. Directly from the page 1 of the UBPR report, the basic profit status of the commercial bank can be seen both from its development tendency and from the comparison between its own and the peer group ratio. First, when referring to its interest income and its interest expense, it can be seen that the interest income of this bank is lower than the average status in its peer group, while the interest expense is higher. This lends to a lower net interest income when compared with its peer group. Meanwhile, from the year 2010 to the year 2013, the interest income has suffered a loss for about 16.6 percent with the interest expense decreased by about 53 percent. The whole peer group has the same tendency while the income decreased by only 12 percent and the interest expense decrease by more than 56 percent. This may both lend to the company’s poor operation when compared with other commercial banks at the same period. And secondly, its noninterest income is more than twice the income of its peer group’s average noninterest income. So though both the noninterest income and the noninterest expense is higher than its peer group, the advantage of its income is bigger than the disadvantage of its expense when in terms of the noninterest income and expenses. Thirdly, its loan and lease...

Performance Management in Central Banks

...Central banks are under increasing scrutiny over their performance, their costs and the extent to which they employ modern management practices. Yet while performance management techniques are widespread in the commercial sector, it is difficult to apply these directly to central banks. This article begins by setting out what is involved in performance management and discusses some of the problems that occur in applying them to central banking. In a second section, some examples of best-practice activities in performance management are considered. It is hoped that this will open a debate about performance management - a debate to which all central banks are invited to contribute1. Performance management in modern organisations is concerned with outcomes (results), outputs (products) and inputs (activities) in that order. It should be concerned with improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the conversion processes between each level of the orgnaisation, and it needs to take account of the degree to which the organisation is conditioned by, or able to control, its environment in seeking to achieve its objectives. What then are the problems with applying performance measurement to central banks? This article groups them into three. First, central banks have to satisfy multiple stakeholders, outcomes and outputs; second, perverse results can arise from pursuing some measures at the expense of others; and third, there are few comparators to turn to for guidance. From a...

Muhammad Yunus, winner of the 2006 Nobel peace prize, founded Grameen Bank in 1983 to provide tiny loans to poor rural women. Grameen became a global model for microfinance. It also spawned 48 other firms in sectors that stretch from textiles to mobile phones. Yet the Bangladeshi government seems determined to take Mr Yunus down a peg. In May 2011 the government pushed him out of his job as boss of Grameen Bank, saying that he was past the retirement age for someone running a government bank. (Grameen Bank mostly belongs to its borrowers but the state owns a slice.) Mr Yunus says this is just a pretext for a power grab. The government now wants to assert more control over other firms in the Grameen network, which includes assets worth an estimated $1.6 billion.
