The negative diction and details clearly show that Banneker is disgusted concerning the issue of slavery, while the positive diction and details show that Banneker is assertive concerning the need to end slavery. While Banneker has a positive and respectful tone throughout his letter, he also is negative regarding slavery; for example, “... you clearly saw into the injustice of a state of slavery and in which you had just apprehensions of the horrors of its conditions.” At the same time Banneker’s biblical allusion brings a positive light to his piece. The author wrote, “...you cannot but acknowledge that the present freedom and tranquility which you enjoy you have mercifully received and that it is the peculiar blessings of heaven.” Banneker also uses positive reflection to the Declaration of Independence.
