The character was borrowed from Holinshed’s Chronicles, therefore was based on a real person.
But there are some differences. The Banquo in real life actually willingly helped towards the murder of King Duncan, different to the Banquo in Macbeth – who was a loyal general of King Duncan.

It’s believed that this was done to please King James as he was supposedly a descendant of the real Banquo. Also, the real Banquo’s son was also called Fleance. Not only that but also Banquo’s descendants were prophesised to become king. Obviously due to King James, who is a descendent of the real Banquo this prophecy became true.

Banquo’s changes
Doesn’t change much, after confronting the witches he becomes sceptical of their prophecies
Stays loyal to his friend. Unlike Macbeth he isn’t swayed by the prophecies from the witches
The only this that changes him is his suspicion to Macbeth over the murder of King Duncan at the beginning of Act 3. Ultimately killed Act 3 Scene 3.

Sympathy to Banquo
At Banquo’s death (ACT 3 SCENE 3) we feel sympathetic because he did nothing wrong.
Meaning – he’ll be less powerful but he will be morally greater, and not as happy in terms of not having the same wealth as Macbeth, but overall he will be happier because he will be the father of kings – but will never be king himself

Banquo’s importance to the play
Shows where Macbeth becomes truly power hungry and takes his own way instead of doing what Lady Macbeth says.
Sees Banquo as a threat and obsesses over him – even after his murder.

Conclusion

Why Did Macbeth Fear Banquo

...being king and has reasons to fear Banquo. This is understood because Macbeth states, "To be thus is nothing;/But to be safely thus.--Our fears in Banquo/Stick deep"(Mac. 3.1.47-49). The most obvious reason for Macbeth to fear Banquo is Banquo’s suspicions of Macbeth for murder. However, Macbeth says he fears Banquo due to his "royalty of nature" (Mac. 3.1.49). For Banquo’s “‘royalty of nature’ is a particularly awesome thing which makes Macbeth shrink pitifully,”(Long 1). Macbeth states of Banquo, "under him,/My Genius is rebuked"(Mac. 3.1.54-55). This “sad confession makes him seem like a boy among men,”(Long 1). He feels that Banquo is inherently superior to him. Just being in Banquo’s presence makes Macbeth feel humiliated....

How Is Macbeth Related To The Death Of Banquo

...Macbeth – Compare and Contrast Essay (Death of Banquo/Act 3 Scene 3) Directors, from James Stuart Blackton’s 1908 silent adaptation to last year’s Justin Kurzel film, have attempted to interpret William Shakespeare’s Macbeth in their own unique styles. The films are based on the original text but differences appear in the way each director decides to recreate the classic play to their audience. From the traditional style of Roman Polanski to the modern interpretation by Rupert Goold, no film is alike. In Macbeth, Shakespeare frequently uses the theme of death to portray the limits and emotions behind the main character’s thirst for ambition. The death of Banquo marks a significant moment in Macbeth’s continuing downfall as it reveals the increasing brutal nature of Macbeth’s greed for power. In Banquo’s death scene, the Goold’s version satisfies Shakespeare’s intended tension while Polanski’s version is flawed for being inaccurate....

Macbeth Questions

...1. Banquo poses the threat of essentially taking away the throne from him. Although the witches stated that Banquo himself would not be king, his sons will be and that in turn poses a threat to Macbeth and soon, his kingship. Because the witches’ prophecy about Macbeth becoming king came true, he questions whether they were going to be right about Banquo and his legacy. Although, Macbeth in this scene is too worried, he does not realize that he was the one who fundamentally caused the series of events to occur after killing King Duncan. Banquo might decide to keep the information he learned from the witches to himself because if he spoke up people might think that he was a part of Kind Duncan’s murder, because they may believe that he did this just to become king. Also, he probably does not want to sabotage his chances of his sons becoming kings if someone else finds out. 2. Macbeth might be curious about where Banquo is going because he wants to keep an eye on Banquo for two reasons. One reason being that he wants to kill him so that his sons are not the reason that he loses his thrown. He uses this as a safety mechanism and later on in the act we find out that Macbeth hires three murders to kill Banquo in order to carry out his plan of staying king. He also wants to keep an eye on Banquo so that way he does not find out that he was the one who killed King Duncan for the thrown. Banquo may have already been suspicious of the murder because he was with Macbeth and heard the...

What Part Does the Supernatural Play in Macbeth?

...What part does the supernatural play in Macbeth? The word supernatural is defined as ‘Not being able to be explained by the laws of nature’. The majority of us would link the word supernatural to ghosts and paranormal activities, which these days can be proved by using complex technology. However if we look back at Shakespeare’s era in around 1606 the majority of the people there completely believed in the supernatural. Their main belief was that witches existed and had great power to change what ever they wanted. It was believed so much in this time that even King James believed that these supernatural beings existed. Although nowadays it is completely the opposite, most of us believe that these supernatural beings are just mythological. The play Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare during the time that probably he himself and the rest of the population believed in the supernatural, it includes several supernatural events and the general atmosphere is a sinister one. The very first part of the play Macbeth includes three witches other wise described by Shakespeare as the weird sisters. These three witches plan to meet Macbeth upon a heath in the storm which is surrounding them. The effect of this automatically gives the reader the feeling that the play is a sinister one. The witches communicate to each other by speaking in riddles, such as “Fair is foul and foul is fair”. We learn two things from this first part of speech from the witches, firstly we can see that...

Macbeth is friends with Banquo and he has a high status, rank, and respect for others. Macbeth and Banquo met the three witches together and they told them both about their futures. ...innocent flower, But be the serpent under’t (1.v.63-66) Speaker: Lady Macbeth Just as Lady Macbeth was introduced in the play, he receives a letter from Macbeth stating the witches’ prophecy and how they came true. Once Macbeth arrives and informs her that the king is to arrive soon, Lady Macbeth says that he won’t be able to see tomorrow and explains how it is a good idea to kill Duncan so that Macbeth could become king. She explains that they will act as they normally would for any feast, and pass time until it is appropriate to carry out their plan. Macbeth should watch what he does and says; to look like a harmless and innocent flower. On the other hand, she wants him to be devious and act like a serpent hiding underneath the flower. By saying this, Lady Macbeth wants Macbeth to hide the fact that they planned to have the king murdered, so that Macbeth won’t be suspected as the murderer. This quotation is an excellent example of animal imagery because Lady Macbeth emphasizes the fact that Macbeth is to act like a serpent. Serpents are one of the most common animals used for imagery. In this case, the serpent is used to symbolize the evil within Lady Macbeth and Macbeth. The theme which is best presented in this quotation is appearance and reality. Macbeth was known to be a loyal and true man who served the king. However, Lady Macbeth was able to persuade him into killing Duncan in order for Macbeth to gain the title as king. Killing the king was an example of an evil plan...

Power in Macbeth

...reality is the fact that it is the main cause of corruption in the world and is often taken advantage of. In William Shakespeare’s work entitled Macbeth, the lust for and corruption by power is clearly portrayed specifically through Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth. Firstly, the play commences with King Duncan and Macduff socializing about ‘the good and hardy soldier’ Macbeth, who at that point in time is brave and gallant warrior who exhibits loyalty and devotion towards his King. Macbeth and Banquo cross paths with the witches who proceed to prophesize Macbeth’s future, labelling him as the future King of Scotland. This immediately grabs Macbeth’s attention and is the driving force behind the alteration of his mind and wellbeing and he ponders what needs to be done to fulfill such a prophecy to become of a high power. Secondly, it is clear that Macbeth deals with the concept of power within his personal relationship with his wife. Lady Macbeth can be viewed as a sinister figure in the sense that she subdues her feminine qualities to express her dark emotions. The more infatuated Macbeth is with his wife, the stronger her power is “Come, you spirits; That tend on mortal thoughts! Unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty. . .” (1.5, 40-43) Her power is exercised through the manipulation of Macbeth – she formulates the plan for her husband to murder Duncan as a result of her greedy desire to become...
