Introduction to the Case Study Healthcare is defined as the maintenance and improvement of physical and mental health, especially through the provision of medical services (healthcare.gov). Most healthcare organizations have a mission statement that reads something like this: Our mission is to provide extraordinary care, where the patient comes first, supported by world class education and research. The job of Nurse Manager within such an organization is to help patients by managing the nurses who care for them. This includes fostering a work place where nurses respect each other and feel valued while providing quality care to patients and their families. “A nurse Manager works with staff and middle-upper management ensuring a two-way flow of communication” (Cathcart, 2). The nurse manager guides while contributing to the success of the organization. The role of nurse manager however does not come without resistance and constraints. ...Growing in Motion: The Circulation of Used Things on Second‐hand Markets1 By Staffan Appelgren & Anna Bohlin Abstract From having been associated with poverty and low status, the commerce with second-hand goods in retro shops, flea markets, vintage boutiques and trade via Internet is expanding in Sweden as in many countries in the Global North. This article argues that a significant aspect of the recent interest in second-hand and reuse concerns the meaningfulness of circulation in social life. Using classic anthropological theory on how the circulation of material culture generates sociality, it focuses on how second-hand things are transformed by their circulation. Rather than merely having cultural biographies, second-hand things are reconfigured through their shifts between different social contexts in a process that here is understood as a form of growing. Similar to that of an organism, this growth is continuous, irreversible and dependent on forces both internal and external to it. What emerges is a category of things that combine elements of both commodities and gifts, as these have been theorized within anthropology. While first cycle commodities are purified of their sociality, the hybrid second-hand thing derives its ontological status as well as social and commercial value precisely from retaining ‘gift qualities’, produced by its circulation. The book famously identified a “problem that has no name”: American women’s confinement to a separate and unequal domestic sphere. One factor contributing to women’s unequal status was their absence from leadership positions. Another aspect of the problem was the lack of cultural consensus that this absence was itself part of the problem, and a matter of social concern. Prior to the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary, Barack Obama was endorsed by Oprah Winfrey, a celebrity with a proven track record of influencing her fans’ commercial decisions. In this paper, we use geographic differences in subscriptions to O! – The Oprah Magazine and the sale of books Winfrey recommended as part of Oprah's Book Club to assess whether her endorsement affected the Primary outcomes. We find her endorsement had a positive effect on the votes Obama received, increased the overall voter participation rate, and increased the number of contributions received by Obama. No connection is found between the measures of Oprah's influence and Obama's success in previous elections, nor with underlying local political preferences. Our results suggest that Winfrey’s endorsement was responsible for approximately 1,000,000 additional votes for Obama.
