Barry Sanders Persuasive Speech

It was just a regular day, where Barry played football for a couple hours then played Madden 17. Barry’s favorite NFL player was Barry Sanders, an elite halfback who played for the Detroit Lions. It was just a coincidence that they had the same name. Or was it?

Barry went to Eastern Valley High School, where he was loved by everyone. Everyone that Barry met wanted to be his friend. Barry was always the best football player on the team, no matter what team he was on. This was because his father, Larry, pushed Barry to be the best possible. He made Barry play football for five hours on weekends and three hours on weekdays. That included running, passing, catching, and lifting weights. Little did Barry know, football ran very deep in the family.

Barry’s dad forced Barry to run a race that day. If he lost, he would have two more hours of practice. Only the race was against college students. When it became Barry’s turn to race, he didn’t think much of it. He was cool and collected as always. Before the race, Larry called Barry over.
“Are you nervous?”
“Not really,” Barry replied.
“Ok, then I want you to give me twenty push ups before the race.”
“But then I will lose!”
“You better not!”
All of a sudden, the gun was shot and the race started. Barry started doing push ups and he was getting booed by the crowd. By the time Barry finished …show more content…
He got a time of 8.67 seconds. They were going from oldest to youngest. Barry was the youngest. The second player started running. He got a time of 10.39 seconds. He wasn't very fast. When the third person went, Barry knew he was fast. He got a time of 7.87 seconds. That broke the record and it only made it harder for Barry. The fourth person was not present. The news was that he broke his leg training for this race. They just decided to call out Barry as he was the fifth person. Barry needed to beat the time of 7.87, which would give him Barry Sanders memorabilia and help the family

Transformational Leadership

...|  Transformational Leadership: Characteristics and Criticisms   Iain Hay School of Geography, Population and Environmental ManagementFlinders University         A prime function of a leader is to keep hope alive. (John W. Gardner)Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. (Ralph Waldo Emerson)Setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means. (Albert Einstein) Collectively, these three short quotations capture some of the key characteristics of transformational leadership, a form of leadership argued by some (Simic, 1998) to match the Zeitgeist of the post-World War II era. Academic debate about the nature and effectiveness of transformational leadership has developed since key work on the topic emerged in the 1970s.  This short paper sets out to provide summary answers to three main questions about transformational leadership. What is it? How is it applied? What are some of its key weaknesses? In the course of the discussion, the following pages also provide a brief background to the origins of transformational leadership theory and point quickly to a possible theoretical future for a transformed transformational leadership.  Transformational Leadership TheoryAccording to Cox (2001), there are two basic categories of leadership: transactional and transformational. The distinction between transactional and transformational leadership was first made by Downton (1973, as cited in Barnett, McCormick & Conners, 2001) but the idea...

...FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing offlimits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and...

Leadership Development - Doe

...Leadership Development Seminars and ECQ-based Readings The success or failure of any endeavor depends on leadership. Now, more than ever before, we need leaders in our organizations and in our world. Great leaders create and communicate a vision and move people into action to achieve it. They ignite our passion and inspire us to do our best. Government leaders in the 21st century are experiencing change at a more rapid pace than previous generations. Rapid advances in technology have expanded the quantity of work we are capable of accomplishing, and also where it’s accomplished. We have a more highly educated workforce, yet face diminishing resources with an increased demand for productivity, and the essential services we provide to the American public. To be successful at navigating these challenges leaders must develop the essential skills to motivate their employees, effectively communicate with others, fine-tune critical thinking skills, and build and leverage partnerships. Future leaders must also be visionary; i.e., possess the ability to identify trends and the courage to be innovative. Being technically adept in your field will no longer be enough. In response to these demands on senior executives, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management identified five Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) that all aspiring government leaders and executives must possess. These ECQs and Fundamental Competencies were developed by OPM after extensive research on the attributes...
