This text talks about the three years of occupation of Egypt by the French people. The French Expedition was considered a turning in modern history of Arab countries in the point of view of western people. The expedition started in 1798 and ended in 1801. The French people wanted to spread their liberal beliefs and ideas and so, they started with the most well developed Arab country, which is Egypt. Although Egyptians were unprepared to be ruled by the French as they were different culturally and ideologically but their influence soon began to appear.
One of the ways the French tried to manipulate the Egyptian mind is by using the anti-feudal system strategy. The Egyptian suffered from this system through which their land was owned by the Mamleuks and they were their slaves. The French expedition came after the French revolution which destroyed the feudalist system. And so the French said they came to liberate them from this oppressive system as well!
Arabs were isolated at the time of Mamleuks and they thought that they were under the protection of the Turkish people. But after the French people came, they that they are weak and they are oppressed by the Mamleuks.
Napoleon Bonaparte was the significant figure of this expedition. He was smart person and a great pretender. He knew the mentalities of the Egyptian and he knew how to reach to their hearts and minds thinking that they would believe him and accept him as his leader.
However, this wasn’t the case. Egyptians or most of the never believed Napoleon, not only that, but they preferred the Turkish over him as said before. There was a great gap between the East and West societies at that time and due to the different cultures they come from, some people thought that the expedition was a clash of civilizations.
But the main question here is that why Napoleon did chose to conquest Egypt? The French expedition had many aims. First, Ottoman Empire’s strategic position encouraged Napoleon’s expansion plans. By controlling the empire, Napoleon would use Ottomans as a trump card on England, which was an enemy to France and was in completion with it to conquer the Ottoman Empire and the world. The French thought that taking the Ottoman Empire would surly weaken the English.
Secondly, Napoleon hoped that the conquest of Arab countries in North Africa and Asia would allow France to create a colonial empire to make up for the lost American colonies.
Thirdly, Egypt was one of the sultan’s richest domains and thus, he would acquire a rich colony. Second, he would empower his position at the Eastern end of the Mediterranean, and hence he could shatter the Ottoman Empire.
Fourthly, a short cut from England to India was through Egypt. Although the Suez Canal wasn’t yet established but trans-shipping stations had been established passengers, goods and mail were unloaded at Alexandria and delivered by caravans to Suez, thus reducing the journey to India. And so if Egypt was acquired he would deal to blow England by disorganizing its connections with India. And fourthly, he would obtain a base for his long-desired campaign against India.
Lastly, France did the expedition to protect French trade interests and establish scientific enterprise in the region.
The expedition began with Napoleon famous proclamation. Napoleon presented himself as a devoted Muslim wearing the Egyptian clothes. He started his proclamation with the name of Allah, the Gracious and the Merciful’ although he wasn’t a Muslim. He claimed that he came to Egypt to rescue the Egyptian from the Mamleuks oppression, mentioning that they are their enemies as well. He didn’t mention he wanted to conquer Egypt or to rule them or anything. In addition, he directed his proclamation to the leaders or in other words that most appreciated by people by Egyptians: Sheikhs, Cadis and Imams, to show the Egyptians that he’s well aware of their interests and personalities and showing him his modesty and those they are his leaders too. He thought if he got closer to their idols he would be able to control them in his hand. Most importantly, he reminded them of the wars he lead against the Crusades and Rome and destroyed their churches and by this proving that he is with their religion and was fighting for it to stay when in the mean while he wanted to rule the world and thus thought of destroying the Crusades. He thought with these tactics he would fool the Egyptians, while they knew that he used an argument used by all colonists before and after him.
Ottomans at that time could’ve controlled their people to revolt against the French. Even the British government called the Sultan to tell them that the French are not coming to liberate you but are coming to conquest you and the Sultan replied that Egypt is a taboo. However, when the French came as mentioned before, they knew that they weren’t strong enough to face the European powers.
On the other hand, it cannot be said that Egypt didn’t benefit of this Expedition. There weren’t any political results. However, brilliant monographs produced by the savants who accompanied the French army to Egypt were produced. Among them were a variety of scientists of many biological fields. They also complied military maps and made a thorough study of a country that was yet little explored. In addition, to a twenty volume Description de l’Egypt, in which collected the most diverse information on the regime of the Nile, on folk music, farming, crafts, way of life and costumes etc... They formed a book that describes Egypt in depth and still used until now, the 21st century!
All these were results of the French expedition that benefited Egypt. Also all these shows how smart Napoleon is and how he worked hard and studied Egypt and Egyptians before he came and what efforts he has made for him to stay longer. Egyptians were well aware of his intentions and didn’t abide by his words, plus the cultural difference played an important role failing this expedition.

However, during the three years of French expedition, the Egyptians experienced the harsh, yet useful school of National Liberation movement. They rose in arms to uphold their country’s independence. The results of their struggle were tangible. Their military experience stood them in good stead in their struggle both against British colonists, who succeeded the French, and against the Mamleuks feudal lords!

Buckeyeball

...BM 2321 (AU2014-Term 1) Case 1 Buckeye Ball Buckeye Ball produced baseballs and softballs for professional competition or serious amateurs. In order to ensure quality and prompt availability, the company manufactured these two items in the United States. Other extensions of the product line were imported from Asia. The U.S. factory operated under a union contract that limited working hours to 35 per week, but offset this with flexible rules allowing any worker to fill any of the job requirements. The production strategy was to schedule level runs of the two products on a weekly basis, which allowed week to week adjustment to meet variability in demand. Raw Materials Ball production required leather and nylon, a solid core that corresponded to the following usage per item: Material | Softballs | Baseballs | Leather (in2) | 5 | 4 | Nylon (in2) | 6 | 3 | Core (oz) | 4 | 2 | The available material for the forecast production run was 5,400 (in2) of Nylon, 6,000 (in2) of leather, and 250 pounds of core material. Very fine thread was used to final stitch the balls that had to be imported from Japan. These were packaged in a kit that could be used interchangeably with either product. So, one kit was required for either a Softball or a Baseball, and the import broker had a partial container of 1,500 kits scheduled for delivery. _____________________ Caution- This case was written by the instructor to demonstrate course concepts with most data made up. Paper on "The Natural"

...The Natural Sports Management 11/2/11 Movie Analysis “The Natural” is one of the most inspiring sports movies that I have ever seen. Matter of a fact it is one of the most inspiring movies that I have ever seen altogether. It is about a baseball player named Roy Hobbs, whose main goal in the movie is to become the best baseball player to ever play the game. It starts out with Roy throwing with his dad at their farm when Roy was a young kid. Then it jumps to a scene where it shows Roy’s dad dying of a heart attack under the tree that is in their front yard. Then it has Roy standing in front of his window one night just looking at the tree when a streak of lightening came down and struck the tree splitting it into two pieces. Now Roy took part of the tree and made a bat out of it and called it Wonderboy. Then it jumps to where Roy is at the age of just getting out of high school and it shows him talking to his girlfriend at the time, whose name was Iris. He was telling her that he had talked to a team out of Chicago and that he had a tryout with the team. As the movie goes a long, it shows him getting on a train with his agent, or the guy that found him and got his tryout, but also on the train it has a guy named Whammer on the train that is supposed to be the best baseball player that was ever going to play the game of baseball. So they stop at a carnival to enjoy their time and during this time Roy’s man that found him and another guy that was with the Whammer on the train...

...Abstract There are literally hundreds of thousands of college athletes in the United States, every one of whom was recruited in some way by the school that they decided to attend. In most cases, high athletes will consider multiple schools before eventually making a final decision. As a former college athlete myself, I took part in this exact decision making process, and can recall just how difficult and time consuming it proved to be. Today’s athletic world lacks a networking website that provides athletes and college recruiters with a convenient platform in order to connect with one another. The site will also link tournament directors with coaches of travel teams in order to address the same issues. Sportal will be the website to solve these problems. Product/Service description Each athlete will have his or her own personal Sportal page, stating basic information including current school, height and weight, game statistics, lifting amounts, running times, and player videos. Also included on the athlete’s personal page will be a “Commitment Status.” This will let potentially interested college recruiters know whether or not an athlete has already made a verbal or written commitment to a certain school. This will help save large amounts of time in the areas of research, phone calls, and visits to athletes who have already made a commitment to play somewhere else. Users will be able to choose whether or not their profile will be public or private to the remainder...

He graduated from Franklin County High School in Royston, Georgia. His father, though, didn’t support his ambition of becoming a baseball player, as he was a teacher, principal, newspaper publisher, and state senator. You get to start early as a baseball player so that you can become acclimated with class and morning workouts. You are taken on a weeklong athlete orientation called Summer Bridge a week before summer classes begin. You along with other freshman athletes get to become familiar with the campus and what is expected out of an athlete here at Florida State. During the week, you are grouped with people from other sports so that you can get to know other people besides your teammates. In your group you do small bonding exercises and team work activities. One activity was a campus scavenger hunt where you have to take pictures in front of certain buildings and this allows you to get familiar with your new school. Summer is an easier adjustment from high school to college compared to fall. During summer you are required to take only two classes and have only early morning workouts. Warren Spahn's Role In Pro Baseball

...Who is the only Milwaukee pitcher to win four games of a pro baseball championship series? Warren Spahn? Pete Vuckovich? Connie Wisniewski? Connie Wisniewski? She’s the right answer—the star right-hander who led the Milwaukee Chicks to the 1944 title of the All-American Girls’ Professional Ball League and an athlete who left her male counterparts in the dust. The most games Spahn won in a single series was one. Vuke didn’t get any while a Brewer. Even Wisniewski’s searing fastball couldn’t save her team from its ultimate jam: It played its season in anonymity and red ink, then moved immediately to Grand Rapids. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of perhaps the most successful, least loved team in Milwaukee history. Chewing gum mogul Philip Wrigley started the league—the same one depicted in A League of Their Own—in 1943 because World War II had siphoned off more than half of the existing major-leaguers. Buoyed by good attendance in towns like Kenosha and Rockford, he added teams the next year in Milwaukee and Minneapolis....

Wood Bats in High School and College

...bats do not produce like metal bats do. The game play is different with each bat. The changes that the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the NCAA make for bats for play will have an effect for upcoming students. In High school and college the players get to use metal bats instead of wood. The performance of metal bats is a lot higher than wood. That is why college and high school use metal instead of wood bats. Metal bats have a higher ball speed off the bat, which is the safety issue that the NCAA and the NFHS have right now. There is a new standard for baseball bats which took effect in 2011 which is the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) bats. They have almost the same ball speed off of the bat as a wood bat does, but the metal bat has a bigger sweet spot. A sweet spot is the part of the bat that will give the biggest trampoline effect to the baseball. Metal bats have made scoring runs in high school and college a lot easier than wood bats. The BBCOR bats have had a slight decline in runs and hits unlike the Ball Exit Speed Ratio (BESR) bats. The change from BESR bats to BBCOR happened in 2011. BESR bats had to high of a ball exit speed off of the bat; they changed it because there were too many kids getting injured. The number of kids that have been injured has gone with down with the BBCOR bats. With using wood bats they break which also would create a safety hazard. Maple bats split into two or three pieces and go flying. So there...

Team Effort: the Communities Created Through Sports

...Hayden Liljenquist ENG 102 Dr. Pegram July 31, 2012 Team Effort: The Communities Created Through Sports Introduction Within today’s society, a number of small, unique communities exist. Communities can range from social, to religious, to occupational. In order to be considered a separate and distinct “community,” the group needs to share common characteristics or interests and be perceived as distinct from the larger society as a whole. Sports teams provide a particularly good example of a community. They separate themselves by the games they play, even by the name they call themselves. The entire world of sports itself can seem confusing to someone who doesn’t understand the rules. Behind each game is a complex realm of jargon, hierarchy, and guidelines. In order to play, you need to learn. And hopeful members work to earn their spot on the team. Through personal participation, as well as observation, one can witness for themselves just how the community created by a team functions. The team experience resonates with a lot of people, and has attracted film makers with stories of motivation, hope, and overcoming the odds. Many of the most well-known sports movies are often even inspired by true stories. In all of these films, similar themes can be found, demonstrating just how much the feeling of community within teams is shared throughout all areas of sports. Teams have a goal, face a challenger, and overcome obstacles, all in the hope of...

Difference in Softball and Baseball

...similarities in softball and baseball By: Jennifer Wallace Baseball and softball are similar in many ways but at the same time very different. To begin with, they are both played on a ball field, known to most baseball or softball players as the ballpark. The ball field for both consist of four bases that form a diamond. Both are played by boys and girls of all ages. While softball and baseball are similar they differ in the size of the ball, the way the ball is pitched, and the length between the bases. A standard baseball for all ages of players is about 9 inches (22.86 cm) in circumference and weighs about 5 ounces (141.75 g). Softballs can vary depending on the age group and the type of softball being played, with standard fast pitch softballs being about 12 inches (30.48 g) in circumference and weighing about 6.5 ounces (184.27 g). A standard slow pitch softball is about 11 inches (27.94 cm) in circumference and weighs about 6 ounces (170.1 g). In addition, many softball organizations use a bright yellow ball, but baseball organizations almost always use white balls. Some people might say that the reason a softball is bigger is because girls need the ball to be bigger so they can hit it, but that is not the case, there are a couple reasons why a softball is bigger than a baseball: First, is because the softball field is smaller and does not have grass in the infield to slow the ball down. If softball players used baseballs, then the game would...

The Spirit Catches You Fall Down

...Baseball Magic - In the article "Baseball Magic" by George Gmelch, it talks about how players and their rituals they perform before a game. The whole idea is to show how two different cultures, American Baseball and the Trobriand Islanders both have the same idea same idea. That idea being that if you change, your way of doing something it ultimately ruin you. Keeping things the same will keep your luck the same. The article talks about rituals, how Dennis Grossini, a Detroit Tiger pitcher, would do everything the same on game day. Dennis would wake up at the same time, eat lunch at the same time, in fact he would eat the same lunch. All this was to win the game, he think that if he lives every day the same way he did the day he won. That the outcome will always be the same. Some may think that this is just stupid, but in reality it may work. By touching your hat or shirt, it relines your hand to where it was when you threw the strike. A ritual for me that in high school before we went on stage to do a play we would all have to jump up and hit the sign above the backstage door. The article also talks about taboo, to where players cannot say a certain word or it will break the luck of another player. The one mentioned in the book is when people say "no-hitter" around the pitcher, it there for makes him throw horrible from then on. In theater people say "break a leg" instead of good luck. Taboo for me is every time I slam on breaks or almost get in a wreck. I say the words...
