...Baseball Tryout I approached the turf hearing the sound of metal bats as kids are hitting baseballs against the net. I feel the sweat drip from my head and run down my neck. I watch the other players warm up and notice a garage door against the back of the facility. The turf covering the floor of the facility is divided by four massive nets. I duck under the small openings in the nets and try to dodge all the baseball bags lying on the ground. I have to stop at each net and untangle my bats that keeps finding a way to get stuck in one everytime I duck. I set my bag down by the garage window and felt a cool breeze. I examined the window and noticed there was a massive crack to the right of the window and on the left, the window had a baseball stuck in it. It held onto the ball like a spider holding its prey. I proceeded to join in on the warm ups. I tossed the ball around with some guy I didn’t know. My heart pounded every time I caught the ball, knowing that the coaches’ eyes were directed towards me. The coach called all of us to meet up and then began some drills. At that moment the tryout began....

...It’s closing in, the end of summer; also, the last game for this season of travel baseball.Im sitting in my bed, hoping that it would just not come. Not because i was excited for my last baseball game this year, but for just, i did not want to play.I was no good at baseball and when i went to bat, everytime my team would sigh and say; “eli is up, time for another out”.They would say this only so loud so our coach would not hear, the coach did not like how they picked on me so if he heard them, he would make them have a harder time at practice. That’s when my mom called called me down the stairs to eat breakfast, as i walked down the stairs i saw my sister was getting home from her morning run and as she opened the door, i could feel the intense heat of the hot summer day. “Look who’s awake early in the morning”My sister rudely says i walk past her. “Don't be so rude towards your brother”My mother says as she is cooking breakfast....

...My First Baseball Hit When I first joined baseball I joined it because my parents said that I had to play in a sport. So, I chose the only sport I had ever heard of besides dodgeball, which my parents didn’t consider it a sport. I never wanted to play baseball, I thought “Great, I get to sit in a field for hours on end”. I wasn’t good at it either so I was always sent to the worst position, right field. Since I was in little league nobody every hit that far which meant I was stuck in a field with 2 other people that also had no clue how to play. Only once did a ball come to the outfield. It came right to the right field, deep right field. I didn’t catch it. Discouraged by that fail, I kept putting myself down thinking that I couldn’t do anything right. Batting was different, never hit the ball. Every time I struck out I got a little more discouraged, thinking I would never hit the ball. Two seasons later I joined a different league. We practiced hitting and catching,...

...stared down at my damaged baseball. I never thought that something like this could ever happen to me. My best friend Cheala and I have been together since preschool. We weren’t ever really best friends, she was family, she was my sister. We rarely ever got into fights. We had agreed on mostly everything. But, baseball is where we were true competitors. I loved the Dodgers and she was a humongous Giants fan. The Giants and the Dodgers have been rivals since the Brooklyn Dodgers became the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Giants became the San Francisco Giants. I don’t even see the whole big deal with the stupid Giant. We have some of the best players ever...

...The odds of a high school player getting the opportunity to play on a Major League Baseball team are one in 6,600, which is equivalent to 0.015 percent (ProSportsOdds.doc). Ever since I was a little kid playing T-ball, I have always aspired of one day making the major leagues. There is no better feeling than stepping on a baseball diamond: smelling the fresh-cut green grass, feeling the soft, raked dirt, and seeing the opposing team you are about to go to battle against. Baseball has always part of me that I can not live without. It stays with me everywhere I go. I am always thinking about baseball, playing it, or talking about it. The odds of making the major leagues are against me, but I am willing to do anything to get the opportunity to play baseball at the highest level possible....

...When I was a little kid I hated going outside. The dirty, hot air, and almost everything else irritated me. I just wanted to stay in and watch TiVo. or play games. But my father pushed me to go outside and play baseball. I was beyond terrible, I couldn’t catch, run, or hit like most eight year olds. Then I joined little league even though I smiled I hated all the kids there. Then my dad went even further and started a baseball team. For the next three years I had to spend most of my time with these idiots… The people on the new team were all older or taller than me. And no one trusted or liked each other. We even went the first year with almost no wins. Then almost everyone on the team left. Then next year we started a new team with new people....

...How many people do you know that would do ANYTHING to win? Luckily, I can say I know our Advance baseball team would do anything to get a win. They did not always succeed when it comes to winning, but they always give 100%. The baseball team main goal was to win every game they play. Although this discourse community did not receive much recognition from the school, they make the most of it. Observing this discourse community, I learned new things about the boys and their sport. If you have watched a baseball game, it was a slow sport. This sport is slow because of how long it takes one batter to bat. When I was watching the boys get ready to start practicing, I could see conservations happening within the baseball team. I could see the boys joking around and talking about their school day before practice. Then, I could see Coach Asmus walk up, and the boys get silent and immediately start stretching. This is a normal behavior of how players react to their coach. While the boys were stretching, the boys counted aloud and...

...My Baseball Hero's Journey: It all started with my first season of travel baseball and my entire team was playing up a year, none of us were competitive or give any effort but that's not what was wrong with it, we had lost every game yet we were still having fun playing the game we love, listing to country music, hitting and playing baseball with all of our friends. Then that's when I got my call to adventure, well I have to start with how travel baseball works, Saturday is seeding and Sunday is play till elimination, we had played this team the day before on Saturday and lost. The problem was they cheated their way there because they were supposed to be playing with 12U, not 10U but keep in mind we were nine at the time and they had also broken...

...tell you about my favorite sport, baseball. I love this sport because of all the memories I have had with it. I like it because it's so fun and it feels great to hit the ball and score for my team. Also when i'm on the field it is great because if the batter hits it to me it is exciting because I have a chance to get him out at first. I love baseball and one of the main reasons is that it is fun. Me and family have a favorite team and that is the cleveland indians. Me and family love to watch them play. It is also fun to play with your friends at a local field. I personally love doing that because it is a great time passer to. But also if you play for a recreational department or for a school team. I play for a team and the rec department and it is great to play for someone and to play competitive. And when you play for a school team then you will play to win. But you can still have fun while playing it....

...It all started when I was four years old, my dad brought me to go buy my first baseball bat and then from there on it was hard work and dedication to the game that has changed my life called baseball. When I and my parents started seeing my potential in baseball we went to Pennsylvania to try out for Beaver Valley which was a travel baseball team. At the time I was eight years old and I loved the game. Me and my head coach’s son made the team of Beaver Valley and went on to have a losing season of 2-13. After that disappointing year our families went to a organization called the Glaciers located in Struthers, Ohio. At this moment we were nine years of age. We created a team of very good baseball players and we practiced from November to March to be the best we could be. That season we were state champions and went a record of 58-3. The next year we got a few more amazing baseball players but there parents always...

...It was that time of year and I was so ready. It was baseball season, basketball season had just passed it was a good season for our Newbern panther boys and girls. This year we were looking for a win, we had never won a game in baseball, ever. So today was the first day of tryouts, and we had a new coach named coach king. He was kind of strict he told me he is the varsity coach for tight ends and full backs for Valdosta high school. Sometimes he would just be mean for no reason. Finally, it was our first week of practice and he was assigning position. It was my turn and coach king put me at a position I had never played out of my 2 other years playing at Newbern Middle School. He assigned me to shortstop I had never played that, ever I...

...Baseball is like an elevator, sometimes you’re going up and sometimes you’re going down and sometimes it’s going up. This is about the many experiences I have had playing baseball with all the ups and downs. It was in 9u we were playing in the league championship game against our arch rival the Bandits and it was tied in the bottom of the last inning and our pitcher could not throw a strike to save his life so he got pulled and coach brought me in with 2 outs and the bases loaded. I got to a full count and I threw a perfect pitch on the corner to strike him out and go to extras I was on top of the world. But we did not score in the top of the 7th and that feeling would soon leave as I gave up the walk off double to lose the game next inning. In the span of just a single game I went from being on the top floor to being at the bottom in the blink of an eye. Two years ago I got invited to Orlando, Florida and arriving there I was...

My dad taught me that there are no boundaries that I can’t cross, especially being a girl in a world that experiences differences based on gender. He opened my mind to a world of possibilities that I could take on. So, I stuck with baseball, and I was pretty good at it. Through this experience,...
