Ty’s introduction to defensive positions in baseball
Baseball is the original America’s sport. It is an iconic sport because it can be played everywhere from parks, playgrounds, back alleys to farmers’ fields, and it can be played by everyone from small children to old men, from raw amateurs to millionaire professionals. In the game, the two teams will take turn batting and pitching/defending. Batting is important because you need points to win, but defending is also important because you need to keep your opponent from scoring. As a baseball player with three years playing in the school club, I am very confident on my knowledge of the game and specifically, the positions. For new players who want to try playing baseball, you need to choose one position from nine on the field, with each position has its own attributes and responsibilities.
We are going to take a look at the defense formation from the farthest players away from the home plate to the nearest one: outfielders, infielders, pitcher and catcher. There are three positions in the outfield: left fielder, center fielder and right fielder. Respectively, the defense position numbers which are used in the scoresheet are 7, 8 and 9. Outfielders normally play behind the six other members of the defense who play in or near the infield. Because the length of each baseball field are different, the distance from the outfield wall to the home plate of each field is unique. However, outfielders normally stand 200 to 250 feet from the home plate. In the game, an outfielder's duty is to try to catch long fly balls before they hit the ground or to quickly catch or retrieve and return to the infield any other balls entering the outfield. For equipment, outfielder's gloves are usually quite long with deep pockets, to help with catching fly balls on the run or in a dive, and to keep outfielders from having to bend down as far to field a ground ball. These gloves typically have 12- to 12.75-inch patterns, measured from wrist to the tip. On a sunny day, outfielders may wear sunglasses to concentrate better on fly balls. Outfielders are the easiest positions to start with in baseball, but they are the hardest positions to master; easy because of the simplicity in the gameplay, and hard because of the high level of skill needed to make big plays. For example, you can play perfectly the whole game by catching easy fly balls without any trouble, but you can miss the jump-and-catch the home run ball and lose your team the game. However, those situations don’t happen regularly, so outfield positions are recommended to newer players of the game. Moving on to the direction of the home plate, we have the infielders. There are four positions that are called infielders: first baseman, second baseman, third baseman and shortstop. Their defense position numbers are 3, 4, 5 and 6 in the same order. Because there are a lot of defensive formations for many situations of the game, the infielders’ position are not set in stone. However, each of them has an area of where they are responsible for in the field. For the first baseman, the area is from the first base to half the distance from second base, and the second baseman is responsible for the rest of the distance to second base. Shortstop’s area is from the second base to have the distance from third base, and the third baseman has the rest of the area from second base to third base. While the distance from the first base and the third base to the home plate are the same and equal to 90 feet, the distance from the second base to the home plate is 127 feet and 3 3/8 inches. Like the outfielders, an infielder's duty is to try to catch fly balls before they hit the ground or to quickly catch or retrieve and throw the ball to other infielders accordingly to the game plan. As a result, infielders also have to catch a ball being thrown to them while standing on the base to record an out. Infielders’ gloves have shallow pockets unlike outfielder’s to allow fielders to remove the ball easily in order to make a quick throw to a base. The webbing of gloves will be open to allow dirt to move through so that the infielder does not pull out a handful of dirt when trying to remove the ball from the glove. Infielder's gloves typically have 11- to 12-inch patterns, measured from the wrist to the tip; however, first basemen’s gloves are longer and wider to help them "pick” or “scoop" badly thrown balls from infielders, ranging from 12.5 to 12.75 inches. Infield positions are not recommended to the newer players of the game because it needs fast reaction, strong arms and finesse in throwing and catching the ball, which only come with a long time of training and practicing. Next, we have most important position in the game: the pitcher. Pitchers’ defense position number is 1. In the game, pitchers stand on the mound which is exactly sixty feet and six inches from the home plate. In most cases, the objective of the pitcher is to deliver the pitch to the catcher without allowing the batter to hit the ball with the bat. A successful pitch is delivered in such a way that the batter either allows the pitch to pass through the strike zone, swings the bat at the ball and misses it, or hits the ball poorly resulting in an out. The pitcher's duty does not cease after he pitches the ball. Once the ball is in play, the pitcher, like other fielders, will respond to any part of the field necessary to make or assist in a defensive play. Unlike infielders, pitchers’ gloves usually have a closed, opaque webbing to allow pitchers to conceal their grip on the ball (which, in part, determines the behavior of the pitch in flight) from the batter, and they tend to have 11.75- to 12-inch patterns. Pitcher is the easiest defensive position in the field because it doesn’t require running long distances or throwing long balls with precision. However, in order to be a successful pitcher, you need to have a variety of pitches to stop the batter from hitting the ball. Therefore, pitchers are only recommended to players who are passionate to the game and determined to learn different kinds of pitches. Finally, the catcher is the closer person to the plate in the defense team. In the scoresheet, catchers’ number are 2. In the game, the catcher’s position is right behind home plate, in front of the home umpire (baseball term for referee). In addition to normal fielding responsibilities like catching fly balls and throwing the balls to the infielders, they have to call for pitches using hand signals and receive the pitches from the pitcher. Sometimes the pitcher can’t control his pitch, so the catcher is always equipped with protectors and guards for safety reasons. These include a face mask, chest and throat protectors, shin guards and a heavily padded catcher’s mitt. Catcher's mitts are called "mitts" because they lack individual fingers, like mittens. They have extra padding and a hinged, claw-like shape that helps them funnel high speed fastballs into the pocket and provide a good target for pitchers. Sizes of catcher's mitts, unlike those of other gloves, are measured around the circumference, and they typically have 32- to 34-inch patterns. Having played the game for three years, I can’t still say that I’m confident being a catcher. This unique position is exceptionally hard because it needs all physical elements (fast reaction, strong hands and the ability to crouch for a long amount of time) as well as the sharpness of a baseball player who knows what pitch is the best in different situations. For new players, catcher is the hardest position in the field. However, if you think you are qualified and you are interested in being a catcher, I don’t see a reason not to try. Baseball is a very interesting sport which is fairly easy for beginners to learn. Although there are nine defensive positions in the field, and each position has different responsibilities, they are all equally important. As said in the introduction, if everybody can play baseball, what’s holding you back? After acknowledging the specific details of each positions and their difference, it’s your time to choose your favorite position, buy the equipment, gather your friends and enjoy a wonderful afternoon with a game of baseball in the park!

Ethical Dilemmas In Professional Sports

...In professional baseball, a innocent looking foul ball off the shin can look rather ordinary, leaving little to be concerned about. Of course, it always has the potential to turn into something more serious when it happens to a player who has bad luck with injuries throughout his career. That is exactly what has transpired with New York Yankees First Baseman Mark Teixeira. In a game played against the Minnesota Twins on August 17, Teixeira fouled a pitch off his shin, forcing him to exit the game in the sixth inning. At the time, much of team's attention was focused on the welfare of rookie pitcher Bryan Mitchell who just a couple of innings earlier had been hit in the face with a line drive off the bat of Eduardo Nunez. While Mitchell was helped off the field with a bloody towel held to his face,...

Narrative Essay About Pitching

...Sandy Koufax once said, "Pitching is the art of instilling fear." Yet there I stood, knees trembling, on the mound. It seemed that the fear was being instilled into me instead of the hitter. I shook it off and felt the warm, dry wind blowing on my face. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, I delivered the first pitch, a ball. I tried again: ball two. Then, ball three. Over and over again I tried to throw a strike, but it's as if the baseball was being magnetized away from the strike zone. My first time pitching in high school was an absolute disaster and I consider it a failure, one of the biggest of my life. How could I practice so hard all season to end up like that? I was destined to be a major league pitcher; I was sure of it....

I look upon the pitcher as he throws the ball, He looks me directly in the eyes, and he’s nice and tall, My heart sinks in my chest, as I’m about to fall, But then my feet regain their strength I do recall. “Yes” I say as my feet land on first base, Now it’s up to my teammates to finish this race, Nervously I say “it’s up to you now” as I look them in the face, We must make this victory that is so swell taste. Personal Narrative: The Sport Of Softball

...Softball has been a very important thing to me. It is a game that you either like it, or you do not. There is no gray areas. No if,ands, or buts. You have to put forth your full efforts for every play. You never know if the ball is coming to you. I think that is why I like it so much. I started playing softball at the young age of eight, which is when kids usually sign up for the all so powerful tee ball or coach pitch. Now this was a really big step for my eight year old mind. It was the first time for me to become a part of something I know all too well about now, but at a young age a team can mean everything. I really knew softball was my passion when I stepped out onto the field for my first ever practice. This is where it all started.Dad always said,”Practice makes perfect honey.”well he is right. If I had not have went through that first day of practice then I would not have a clue of what I was doing. The bases would just be some random cubes of rubber in the middle of a dirt and grass clumps field. Not a sign of being safe, and if you know anything about softball being safe is defiantly a good thing. It is what base running is all about.Being aggressive, but being safe along with that After I got through those crucial coach pitch years where you learn all of your basics, I stepped up to the pitching machine. It was a big change because I wasn't use to a machine throwing balls at me. I thought to myself self oh no the ball is actually moving and I'm...

Ultimate Dodgeball Research Paper

... I like going to sky zone because it’s a lot of fun and I enjoy going there. I’ve made a lot of friends at SkyZone. I know everybody that works there and most of the people who come daily. At SkyZone they have ultimate dodgeball. Ultimate dodgeball is where you play dodgeball on trampolines. It is a lot of fun I know how to curve the ball and throw really fast. I’m also good at dodging the ball. At Ultimate dodgeball people used to cheat and i thought the only way to win is to cheat with them but, that's not the right thing to do. Now when i see somebody cheating I go to the ref and say this person is out. I’ve learned from ultimate dodgeball that cheating is not a good way to win. They also have this thing called a dunk contest. That's where you have 3 basketball hoops next to each other. The one on the very right is 6ft tall if not shorter. It’s meant for little kids.. The middle one is 10ft tall and the one on the very left is the tallest, it is 14ft tall. These two are meant for older kids. I can do a lot of fancy tricks on the middle one. I can dunk on the tallest one but I can’t do fancy tricks. I’ve learned not to cut in line. Some people are just impatient and cut you. I’ve learned not to push them out the way but to just let the ref know that this person cut the line. Then they have free jump. That’s where you have a lot of trampolines beside each other and you can do whatever tricks you want. I know how to a lot of backflips in a row. They also have trampolines...

Personal Narrative: Softball

...“Progress always involves risks. You can’t steal second base and keep your foot on first” (Frederick B. Wilcox). Over the years something I have always been passionate about is softball. It has always been a family occasion and something many of my family members can relate to. Throughout the years there have been many firsts. Now as I play it brings a sense of calmness and allows an escape from the world for a while. As a young boy my grandpa could have never guessed that him playing softball could have impacted his future grandchildren in such a great way. He grew up playing, my dad grew up playing, and I grew up playing. Their passion for the game rubbed off on me. They had many great suggestions that have definitely helped me. So, I have my grandpa to thank for the love of softball. I remember the day I hit my first homerun very clearly. We were playing at Frank Olsen Park against the Dairy Queen team. I was up to bat and as the ball hit the bat it soared over the fence. I knew that this game is what I loved. As I ran around the bases I remember being so ecstatic and so proud. Now, not all of my firsts were happy ones, my first strikeout, my first fly ball, which they caught, the first time hitting a person while pitching. Even though at the time I didn’t think I would get past it, these moments have shaped me into the player I am today. Now as I step onto the field I can forget all my worries and just play softball. IT’s like going back to my childhood, even if it’s only...

Right Field

...The different positions in the game of baseball can represent the kind of person you are. The outfielders are labeled as the losers and the infielders are the wisecrackers. An important decision is deciding which one of these you want to be, because it can affect your life forever. Stuart Dybek expresses how the death of a potential future, can lead to reminisce of lost opportunities. Many don’t realize the opportunities they failed to benefit from, when constructing their lives for success. The most common barrier in these kinds of situations is yourself; whether or not you have the willpower and motivation to pursue your abilities. In the game of baseball the outfielders are resembled as loners, specifically the right fielders. This particular fielder is usually entitled as the worst of the team. Dybek says “He didn’t necessarily choose right field as much as accept it” (Dybek, 1). This quote refers to the indolence of many people of our society. Nothing in life comes easy, without hard work. Once people are positioned in upsetting circumstances, they no longer put forth the effort to overcome them. The decisions they make now to not apply themselves, will have a negative results in the long run. When the boy was found he was laying face down in the field, Stuart then says “His mitt had been pinned under his body and was coated with an almost luminescent gray film” (Dybek, 3). I feel as though the mitt in this scenario is in demonstration of someone’s life...

How to Play the Game of Softball

...How to Learn the Game of Softball Softball is a team sport that closely resembles baseball. A softball game is played between two teams. Each team can have multiple players on their roster; however, only nine players can be on the field at a time. The object of the game is to score the most runs. A run is scored when a player on the offensive (batting) team advances around all four bases, touching each in turn, without being "put out" by a player on the defensive (fielding) team. The game is played on a field that consists of a dirt infield and a grass outfield. The infield is square and is sometimes referred to as the diamond. There are four bases on the field; the starting and ending base is called “home plate.” The other three bases, going counter-clockwise, are first, second, and third base. A game is usually made up of seven innings, although, fewer or more innings may be played depending on the score. The game of softball is an easy one to gain knowledge of, all the player has to do is learn the rules, the mental game, and the positions. The first thing the player should do to learn the game of softball is learn the rules. The rules of softball are fairly simple. The game has a lot of little rules but the big rules are what are important. The player should go to the nearest Wal-Mart or Academy to find a rule book about softball. That is the best way to learn the rules. For example the infield fly rule is when there are less than two outs, or how the player cannot leave...

The goal is to score more runs than the opponent, which is achieved by one circuit of four bases that are placed on the diamond. The Equipment. The defense wears baseball/softball gloves, a leather contraption that fits on the hand, to catch the ball. The offense uses a bat, which is made of wood in the professional ranks, and likely made of aluminum or a metal composite at amateur levels. Almost all softball bats are aluminum or metal. The Feild. The part of the field closest to the bases is called the infield, and the grassy farther reaches is called the outfield. Defence: The Positions. There's a pitcher in the middle of the mound who initiates the action by throwing the ball toward home plate. The catcher catches the ball if it's not hit. Baseball Broken Down Into Numbers

...DeVry University College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Pomona, California Baseball Broken Down into Numbers Baseball Numbers 1 Did you know that baseball was being played before the American Civil War? Baseball is one of America’s greatest pastimes. This sport is highly valued because unlike other sports it doesn’t require a specific height or weight. This is very rare to find in a sport because weight and height affect the whole game in other sports. Baseball has many great statistical aspects. One of these great statistical aspects is batting average. A player can have the worst batting average and still be considered a legend. For example, a player can hit with a .220 batting average, but still be considered an excellent ball player due to their playmaking defensively. Although batting is important being a well-rounded player is a concept that is valued higher. Can you believe that a batter can strike out at the plate multiple times and still be considered to be a great player? Pitching is a big part of baseball. Pitching is an aspect of baseball that determines if a team wins or loses. It is very difficult challenging to pitch and hit pitches. Throwing pitches is challenging due to the amount of skill needed to pitch. A pitcher will need to be able to throw a variety of pitches ranging from fastballs to change-ups.
