...Perception: Baseball Ever since I was a child, baseball has been a passion and love of mine. I would watch the Mets play every night on TV. with my family ever since I could remember. On the hot summer days, we would bring the TV. outside and watch the games until the stars were shinning over us. Playing baseball was also something I did almost every day too, whether it is in my back yard with my older cousins or parents or on the baseball field during a game. When I was young I loved the game and played more for the love of the game but as I grew older, I began to understand the game and pay close attention t hw my teammates played and my opponents as well. Baseball has now turned into somewhat of a class now for me. I try and correct my mistakes to better myself and I watch others to see what they do in certain situations or to see what they do that allows them to overpower their opponents. My perception of baseball is now focused on pitchers in the major leagues. I try to learn what the great ones do to excel because watching and studying the best will only benefit me down the road. After watching baseball for practically 15 years, I have learned that all pitchers have their own styles, deliveries and philosophies but the mechanics of most pitchers are the same. Many pitchers believe in the same types of mechanics. Some examples would be to keep your shoulders level while in your motion or driving off the rubber with your back leg to generate their maximum power...

Baseball

...Although many argue that the answer to the question “how could the world be a better place?” should be left to intellectuals, politicians or scholars, I believe that the best answer to this questions is demonstrated by 60,000 baseball fans. Fans at a baseball game do not merely provide support for the home team, but also a metaphor for life. Specifically, the actions of the spectators at a game illustrate the selfish desires of human nature as well as a possible answer to improve life for all. For example, when I attend a baseball game, I notice that many fans have individual aspirations for success beyond which team wins the game. It appears that ultimate desire of a baseball fan is to be featured on the Jumbo-tron, the oversized television screen located within the stadium. Many fans believe that the Jumbo-tron brings everlasting happiness and glory to any featured on its oversized screen. However, while the Jumbo-tron allows some to rejoice in their fifteen seconds of fame, I have noticed that it also has a dark side. At times the Jumbo-tron arouses hidden feelings of jealousy towards those like Joe Jones, from section 435 row G seat 1, when he wins a free tub of extra large nachos and his success is celebrated on the large screen in center field. While some fans completely disregard the aspirations and desires of others just so their individual goals can be met, there is always one courageous fan that stands up and represents the coming together of people in order to achieve...

Baseball

...Baseball is America’s pastime for the last one hundred years. Baseball has brought joy and happiness to many people’s lives throughout the years. Baseball is theater to many people. It shows the struggle between two different teams playing their hearts out to win a championship; just like two countries going to war. Baseball has many star players and many great players that people have grown up with and idolized. Children play games in the local park pretending that they are Mark McGuire or Barry Bonds, hitting the game winning home run in the ninth inning with two outs to win the World Series. In my essay, I will be describing the ritual that I gravitate to. I will convey the six elements of theater while describing the ritual that I gravitate to: baseball. First, there are the baseball players. They are the actors in this particular genre of theater. They play nine different positions on the field on defense, while the opposing team only has one person on the field batting. If he reaches one of the bases, another person will also bat. The players play the biggest part at a baseball game. They produce all of the excitement that can drive the fans crazy. They do this by hitting homeruns, making spectacular catches, and striking out opposing batters. Second, we have the managers and umpires. They play the part of the director. The manager determines who gets to be on the field, what position they play, and what they should do while batting. The manager can take a player out...

Baseball Failure

...Failure is a strong thing, it has a great effect on people. What's important is how you react to failure and what you take from it. One of my most memorable failures would be not making the high school baseball team. This had a lasting effect on me but it provided motivation for me which took me to greater things. So let’s start with my reaction. At first I did not take the news well, I was devastated. Baseball is my life and always has been. I thought about all the things that were gonna change with the absence of baseball in my life. As time went on the reality started to hit me that I probably would never play again. I panicked, I told my parents to transfer my school so I could play again. But what would that do? Chances are I might not...

...Small Group Comm. January 2013 Participation Assignment 1 The group I chose to reflect on for this assignment is the baseball team here at Western New England University, my freshman year in particular. When reminiscing back on the 2011 season, I can recall many specific qualities of Keyton’s criteria that this group displayed. As a freshman, I paid close attention to our group who exhibited many qualities of leadership and aspiration, goals that I hope to impose upon my under classmen. With respect to size, the team barley fit Keyton’s threshold, usually carrying no more than 19 players on average throughout the season. The group was interdependent, and heavily relied on the next man to “step up” and make a play. In order for a successful baseball team, interdependence is required, and our actions and energy often influenced each other to succeed. The team shared one particular but strenuous goal: winning a national championship. This goal is impossible to be achieved with one person, but large enough to require everyone’s participation. With regards to group identity, our team was a tight knit unit. Respect was earned and given where needed and the team acted as a large family, eating meals together and hanging out off the field as well. The task of our team, winning a championship was agreed upon by most of our team. Those members with less significant roles and “weren’t there mentally” bringing down our morale. Our structure and roles were both predetermined...

Baseball Bat

...wants the facts of the case not a “Great Story. Choice of wording makes it a difficult read. The baseball bat was broken from the outset when it was bought by the plaintiff. Statement is not clear. Did the plaintiff know the bat was broke when they bought it? Did the plaintiff inspect the bat for damage or how much the cut of the wood strayed from the grain? Without that information I would omit that sentence. Therefore, the defendant should have to return the baseball bat and pay the money back to the plaintiff that plaintiff paid for said bat .Defendant would not be the one returning the bat. The plaintiff bought a baseball bat from the defendant and the baseball bat turned out to be broken since as soon as the defendant used the bat to play baseball, the bat shattered into a million pieces. The statement used the bat to play baseball” could leave room to believe the plaintiff used the bat for other purposes. ...thing that stands out about our similarities is that we both played baseball in college. My grandpa grew up on the west side of Chicago in a neighborhood called Garfield Park. He grew up in a lower class family that often couldn’t afford nice things. Since he loved the game of baseball, situations would sometimes come down to if he wanted a new baseball glove or new cloths. My grandpa no brainer would pick the baseball glove. After high school, my grandpa went on to attend Western Illinois University on a full baseball scholarship. During his baseball career at Western Illinois, a lot of pro scouts would come to see him play. Teams would send him letters and even visit with him to talk about his future. My grandpa was never interested in playing professional baseball though. It always was hard for me to understand why he never took up the chance to be a professional baseball player. I mean let's be honest, who doesn’t want to be a professional athlete when you’re a kid? Whenever I would ask him, my grandpa would always tell me “Matt there are way more important things than playing a game that involves hitting a ball with a stick in life”. Being young and dumb, I would also ask too, what can be more important than that? My grandpa would look at me and say, Family first. As I grew older, his statement would make more and more sense to me. There really are things in life that are more important. After all, as baseball players were told at some point we can’t play the children’s game...

Difference in Softball and Baseball

...similarities in softball and baseball By: Jennifer Wallace Baseball and softball are similar in many ways but at the same time very different. To begin with, they are both played on a ball field, known to most baseball or softball players as the ballpark. The ball field for both consist of four bases that form a diamond. Both are played by boys and girls of all ages. While softball and baseball are similar they differ in the size of the ball, the way the ball is pitched, and the length between the bases. A standard baseball for all ages of players is about 9 inches (22.86 cm) in circumference and weighs about 5 ounces (141.75 g). Softballs can vary depending on the age group and the type of softball being played, with standard fast pitch softballs being about 12 inches (30.48 g) in circumference and weighing about 6.5 ounces (184.27 g). A standard slow pitch softball is about 11 inches (27.94 cm) in circumference and weighs about 6 ounces (170.1 g). In addition, many softball organizations use a bright yellow ball, but baseball organizations almost always use white balls. Some people might say that the reason a softball is bigger is because girls need the ball to be bigger so they can hit it, but that is not the case, there are a couple reasons why a softball is bigger than a baseball: First, is because the softball field is smaller and does not have grass in the infield to slow the ball down. If softball players used baseballs, then the game would...

Business of Baseball

...Mgt. 110 Business of Baseball Jordan Core 1. Baseball is full of decisions; every single last pitch is a decision, whether to pitch it high, low, inside, outside. The coach must make the decision of which players to play on certain nights and whether or not to take a pitcher out of the game. I think baseball has the most decisions to be made out of all the “big four” sports. Most decisions in baseball are structured problems, they are easily definable. If a slugger keeps hitting the fastball, it’s time to make the decision of pitching him curveballs away from his hotspot in the strike zone. There is a standardized way of handling almost every type of player and situation. Granted, there may be certain decisions that are unstructured problems and are not faced everyday by the manager such as a star player going down with an injury. The manager must make the decision of how to fill the void left by the injury. If you believe in it, luck can be an unstructured problem as well. In baseball all decision makers are faced with either risk or uncertainty. I don’t believe there is any certainty in any sport. Even the best pitchers have games where they falter so nothing is to be expected. To be the best manger you can be in baseball you have to have as much risk as you can and as little uncertainty as possible. Knowing you will never have total certainty you have to make the most accurate decision you can and it seems now the more stats you put into making your decision...

Instant Replay in Baseball

...Instant Replay in Baseball As of now, the only use of instant replay in baseball is to decide whether what appears to be a homerun is indeed a homerun. However, recent talks have began to arise on the expansion of this so called tool. These talks began after a controversial call that occurred a couple months ago between the Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians. The Tigers pitcher, Armando Galarraga, had a perfect game going into the ninth until the first base umpire made a close call resulting in a hit. After a slow motion replay on T.V, it was clear that the umpire missed the call causing an uproar of critics, claiming baseball needs instant replay to save this from happening again. To prevent a once in a life time perfect game from being taken away due to a missed call. I disagree with this immediate request. Further use of instant replay in baseball would ruin the game America has enjoyed for a century. The main argument for instant replay is so that bad calls by umpires can be over turned. It would eliminate the need for raging manager arguments and ejections. It would make the league mistake free. I believe these mistakes are actually good for the game. Baseball fans enjoy watching the managers scream into the umpires' faces while vigorously throwing his arms up in the air. It adds a surge of energy through those in the crowd and those watching at home. It also gives his team motivation to play hard because they know that their coach has their back...

Social Inequalities In Baseball

...There are social inequalities within US baseball. For example, there are issues regarding players’ salaries and how much a player makes versus how much a player should make. With race, white players have always outnumbered players of color and a change is nowhere in sight. Major League Baseball has a strong stance against discrimination based on sexual orientation. They are also extremely inclusive of players who are immigrants to the United States. Although baseball tends to be a middle or upper class world, today’s players reign from 25 different countries and about one-quarter of all big leaguers are citizens of countries besides the US. One social inequality in particular is significantly outstanding compared to any other; it is the fact...

How to Play Baseball

...How to play baseball I believe that baseball is my favorite sport to play. I got to like this sport because I have watched my brother since I was little. I thought it was cool to watch him. I knew one day when I was bigger I would play myself. I am a born and raised Chicago Cubs fan just like my dad and brother, but my mom likes the Sox’s. The materials you need when you play baseball are helmet, baseball glove, bat, baseball pants, ball cap, jersey and spikes. Helmets are very important so the ball don’t hit your head. It ball can hurt you very bad, if you don’t have a helmet on. Here are the basic steps you need to play the baseball game. First you need a field to play the game on. Second you will need to learn some starter rules. Rule number one is to never yell at the umpire. If you do they can throw you out of the game and you will be in trouble. This can cause you to sit the bench in the next innings or even get thrown out of the game. Second do not slide in to first base, because you can get hurt. The final rule is have fun and treat other players with respect. When you first get a glove you have to make sure to break it in. If you don’t break the glove in properly you will not be able to catch the ball right, like a fly ball. It can cause the ball to roll out of your glove. Then the batter can get a base run or even score a point, instead of getting an out. Try your hardest and have fun, if you strike out its okay. On your next at bat you try again forget...

The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to recognize outstanding natural talent in the sport of Baseball. Look at our beloved long time baseball legends, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and many more. How would they feel to see professional baseball players cheat their way in and make it easy on themselves? Baseball meant so much to them and to see future players disrespect our baseball legends and allow them to go to Cooperstown, would be awful to past and present players. Baseball fans know players want to give it all and ultimately make it to the World Series and achieve other outstanding goals, but taking illegal drugs is taking it too far. This leads into the major league baseball punishments for using performance enhancing drugs. The major league baseball has punishments for players who use steroids and performance enhancing drugs. America and Baseball

...America and Baseball: If You Want to Know America, Then you better Know Baseball Sean R. Golob Western Governors University If You Want to Know America, Then you better Know Baseball Baseball hits a home run when it comes to comparing it to the American identity. Both baseball and the American identity have three aspects that are exactly the same; both are very diverse, both are rather competitive, and both are driven by business and money. America is a diverse country, according to US Census Bureau (2013) quickfacts reference page, “Caucasians alone total 77.7%, Hispanic and Latino alone 17.1%, and African American alone 13.2%”. However, America has races from every inhabitable continent; we have a large number of Asians, mass amounts of Europeans, and growing amounts of Latinos and African ethnicities. These aspects all put together combine to make a huge part of the definition of American identity. Along with diversity, another aspect that is used in the definition of American identity is business and corporations. Corporate America is one of the largest and wealthiest forms of business in the world. Wall Street deals with billions of dollars daily, corporations throughout the country grow in size and significance. Lastly, competition is the last big part of the definition because of the international trade, emphasize on sports and athletics, and between other rivalries between other countries. The same is with baseball in America;...
