B.A.S.H. Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard

The first documented bird strike was made by Orville Wright during a flight near Dayton, Ohio in 1905. Bird strikes have caused millions of dollars in damages to aircraft and loss of human life. Calbraith Rodgers, the first pilot to fly across the continental United States, ironically was also the first to die as a result of a bird strike. In 1912, he struck a gull, causing his plane to crash into the water at Long Beach, California. Recently bird strikes have been given heightened notoriety in the public due to the well publicized incident at La Guardia Airport, when both engines of an Airbus A320 were disabled by several birds being sucked into them. The pilot of the US Airways Flight 1549 landed the aircraft safely into the Hudson River, where all 150 passengers survived. Bird Aircraft Strike Hazards are of particular importance to me because about five times a month I work on the flight line at MCBH Kaneohe Bay. About once every other month I am asked to retrieve bird remains from the runway or notify air traffic control of populations of birds intruding our flight area. I have to locate all parts of the bird’s body, place the remains in a bag, and then give them to air traffic control for further investigation. The investigation usually takes place by trained wildlife biologists working at the airport. If not identifiable, The Smithsonian Institution's Feather Identification Laboratory is then given the remains for further analysis. Today, because of the damage of aircraft and loss of life there are many factors affecting today's bird and aviation safety. These factors are. 1) The less noisy, more technological advanced jets, have replaced the noisier and slower piston-powered aircraft; therefore there has been an increased chance of collision. 2) There has been an increase in all air travel across the globe, both military and commercial. 3) Many modern airports are built around natural habitat areas. The have been over 100,000 wildlife strikes between the years of 1990 and 2008 Light hours account for a majority of bird strikes. They also occur more frequently during July and October. The reported costs of a bird strike averages $123 million per year but when costs are estimated based on 80% of bird strikes that were not reported the cost could be as high as $614 million per year. The Bird Aircraft Standard Hazard is so important. “There is also myths and legends of a bird strike. “Myth - Bird strikes cannot cause serious airline accidents.” “Fact - Since 1975, nine large jet airliners have had major accidents where bird strikes played a significant role. In one case, about three dozen people were killed.” Myth - Bird strikes are no more of a problem today than 20 or 30 years ago.” “Fact - In North America, bird strike hazards are increasing. Because of outstanding wildlife conservation and environmental programs in North America, populations of many bird species have increased dramatically since the 1970s. Millions of acres have been set aside as wildlife refuges and strong environmental laws such as the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act have protected birds and other wildlife. As a result, species like non-migratory Canada Geese, which frequent urban areas such as golf courses, parks, and airports, have more than quadrupled in number from 1985 to 2008. As another example, the double-crested cormorant population on the Great Lakes has increased over 1,000-fold, from 89 nesting pairs in 1972 to over 100,000 pairs in 2009. These increases have led to an increase in the number of birds in the vicinity of both large and small airports and greater opportunities for birds, especially larger birds, to be hit by aircraft.”
One of the best tools for tracking bird movement is Radar. These radars are used in many ways to give both civilians and military effective data. Doppler can show both speed and direction of migrating birds. Use of the WSR-88D has been very successful in providing data to model bird activity in relation to Military Training. In the local airfield environment, mobile marine radars can track real-time movements of individual birds or flocks adjacent to and in a 6-8 mile radius of runways. The Air Force and Navy are developing and testing several “bird radars” to determine which models and configurations can best isolate specific locations of birds where aircraft operations can be modified and environmental management strategies applied to reduce the attractiveness to birds. Many remains are identified by trained wildlife biologists working at the airports. The Smithsonian Institution's Feather Identification Laboratory is able to identify a bird species from its remains. Depending on the condition of the remains, birds can be identified based on physical characteristics, feather fragments, and/or DNA analysis. The Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard is a very serious safety issue that all aviation needs to deal with on a daily basis. In my first instance of it I laughed because most people outside of the issue could not relate to the severity and life threatening effects of the complex problem. After taking in the facts my opinion has changed. B.A.S.H. is so important and at one time I thought it was stupid. I want the planes that I maintain and those who fly it to be heroes… like my friend He is a real hero!

Bash Shell

..."Bash is a Unix shell written by Brian Fox for the GNU Project as a free software replacement for the Bourne shell (sh). Released in 1989, it has been distributed widely as the shell for the GNU operating system and as the default shell on Linux and Mac OS X. It has been ported to Microsoft Windows and distributed with Cygwin and MinGW, to DOS by the DJGPP project, to Novell NetWare and to Android via various terminal emulation applications. Bash is a command processor, typically run in a text window, allowing the user to type commands which cause actions. Bash can also read commands from a file, called a script. Like all Unix shells, it supports filename wildcarding, piping, here documents, command substitution, variables and control structures for condition-testing and iteration. The keywords, syntax and other basic features of the language were all copied from sh. Other features, e.g., history, were copied from csh and ksh. Bash is a POSIX shell but with a number of extensions. The name itself is an acronym, a pun, and a description. As an acronym, it stands for Bourne-again shell, referring to its objective as a free replacement for the Bourne shell. As a pun, it expressed that objective in a phrase that sounds similar to born again, a term for spiritual rebirth. The name is also descriptive of what it did, bashing together the features of sh, csh and ksh. The Bash command syntax is a superset of the Bourne shell command syntax. The vast majority of Bourne shell scripts...

After all, the shell is the most fundamental interface to the system, the conduit for all command-line interactions. Thus, it's important to have a solid foundation in whatever shell you choose. There are many different shells available, from Ash to Zsh. They all differ in many ways, and some (such as Csh and Tcsh) vary wildly from the others. Each has its selling points. However, because Bash has become the de-facto standard shell on most Unix-like operating systems and can generally be found everywhere, it makes an excellent place to start, even if you ultimately choose a different shell for daily use. ...9 9 Chapter9 Answers to Evennumbered Exercises 9 1. 2. What are two ways you can execute a shell script when you do not have execute access permission to the file containing the script? Can you execute a shell script if you do not have read access permission? You can give the name of the file containing the script as an argument to the shell (for example, sh scriptfile, where scriptfile is the name of the file containing the script). Under bash you can give the following command: $ . scriptfile Because the shell must read the commands from the file containing a shell script before it can execute the commands, you must have read permission for the file in order to execute the shell script. 3. 4. Among which Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab and Goa may be the front runners. Odisha may not even appear in the first 10. So what makes these states economically better than us despite the fact that we are far wealthier than the others in terms of Natural Resources, history, culture and intelligent brains? To find out let’s have a closer look at the simple strategies adopted by the prosperous states. My father always said, owning a gold brick does not make you rich. You will be rich only when you learn to make a fortune out of it. It is that simple. The prosperous states have done this. Only that in their case, the areas of their strength was their gold brick. Gujarat is strong in entrepreneurship and business sense, Goa is rich in natural landscapes and Punjab is rich with fertile agricultural land. First Mariner Arena

...We Americans today have taken a lot from the Romans, but the main thing that we have gotten from them is their structure of the buildings used for entertainment. They used coliseums for the use of amusing the town people. They would hold gladiator shows, or fights till the death as well as chariot races and killing fugitives for the use of others amusement. Another thing that they used the buildings for where; dinner theater shows for the upper class and emperors and empresses. The structure of these buildings where really important because they had to hold a lot of people due to the fact of that was usually the only means of entertainment. The building that I chose that I feel as though portrayed this is the first mariner arena. The first mariner arena is built as if it was a coliseum but in particular the pantheon; and it is used to host plays as well as the circus and other forms of entertainment in Baltimore. Although it does use arches the inside of the building uses the same structure which is kind the bowl shape. I feel as though they use this shape to fit as many people inside as possible. Another thing that I have noticed the structure for the hallways or tunnels used for the entertainment to enter in has not changed much either. Also whoever the entertainment is for that particular event is usually put in the center of the arena or coliseum so that everyone can see even if you are sitting up high. So in conclusion a lot of our buildings used for entertainment where derived...

Whilst on his way to the car park office to complain he was hit by the same towing vehicle, which was clearly being driven dangerously by one of Bash Ltd’s employees. As a result, not only was his car severely damaged, but he suffered a broken leg and was off work for eight weeks. Bash Ltd has accepted that its employee was negligent on both counts but denies any liability, relying on the exclusion clause Required: On the understanding that the clause excluding Bash Ltd’s liability was incorporated into its contract with Andy, advise Andy whether there is any action he can take against Bash Ltd. Death and Impermanence

...Final paper for English 225 Death and Impermanence In life we often learn through the experiences of others or own experience. We can also change our actions or beliefs from what we have learned. Death is different and we cannot experience or learn from the dead. For example, you could write a simple bash script that will change the background color on your screen. Also with bash scripts, you can run them when you want to. They don’t have to be run right away, you have the freedom to do it when you want to. Bash is a unix based shell created by a programmer named Brian Fox while he worked for the Free Software Foundation. Bash is an acronym for Bourne-again shell. It is a reference to its initial purpose, to serve as a free open-source version of the Bourne Shell. However, bash has grown into its own shell, and is currently the default shell for most linux kernels and mac OS X. The Bourne shell is the original unix shell, often called a command interpreter, that was developed at AT&T. Named for its developer, Stephen Bourne, the Bourne shell is also known by its program name, sh. The shell prompt (character displayed to indicate readiness for input) used is the $ symbol. The Bourne shell family includes the Bourne, korn shell, bash, and zsh shells. Bourne Again Shell is the free version of the Bourne shell distributed with Linux systems. Bash is similar to the original, but has added features such as command line editing. It offers functional improvements over historical versions of sh for both interactive and programming use. The name is an acronym for bourne-again shell, a pun combining...

Linux Shell

...verifying that the commands are valid, the shell sends them to another part of the command processor to be executed. The shell is a program that takes your commands from the keyboard and gives them to the operating system to perform. In the old days, it was the only user interface available on a UNIX computer. Nowadays, we have graphical user interfaces (GUIs) in addition to command line interfaces (CLIs) such as the shell. On most Linux systems a program called bash (which stands for Bourne Again Shell, an enhanced version of the original Bourne shell program, sh, written by Steve Bourne) acts as the shell program. Besides bash there are several additional shell programs available on a Linux system which includes sh, ksh, csh and tcsh. The differences between bash and the other shells is that bash has a command history features that allows you to recall, edit and rerun previous commands, and command completion when pressing the tab key. Whereas the ksh shell has a scripting features that is not included in bash shell. Before you install linux you must have a plan on how you want your disk partition. The advantages of planning are you can isolate parts of the file system, so that they can be preserved if you reinstall the operating system.
