...Plane Surveying – Levelling Civil Engineering 235 Introduction: Levelling is a means by which surveyors can determine the elevation of points, using other known points as references. Levelling is perhaps the most basic of surveying operations and forms an important fundamental part of almost every surveying project. Department of Civil Engineering, UBC Equipment: Levelling is carried out by the use of: a Spirit Level, often called an Engineer’s Level, and a level rod. The level rod resembles a large fold-up ruler but is not accurately referred to as such. Basics of Levelling: In levelling, the surveyor looks back (BS) to a point of known elevation to determine the elevation of his or her instrument (EI). The surveyor then looks forward (FS) to a point of unknown elevation and determines the elevation of that point using the elevation of his or her instrument (EI) and the value on the level rod read through the level’s telescope. BS 1.600 EI = 81.600 FS 1.739 80.000 BM 79.861 Point A Once the elevation of a point is determined, that point can be used for determining the elevations of other points. In this way, the surveyor may “leap-frog” forward, eventually determining the elevations of points that are impractical from the initial location, and developing greater accuracy by means of a “closed traverse”. ...The conversation that I stumbled upon was with several people talking about how much each individual works and when they are on the road, how much they have to eat out and how much money is spent on this every day. I am going to give person number one a name of Brent, person number two a name of Chance, and person number three a name of Sid. Keeping this in mind; Brent told Sid that he was tired of eating out so much. He stated that he would rather go to a convenient store and grab some stuff to make. Chance came in to the conversation and agreed with Brent. Chance, then added to the conversation saying that there is so much money spent on eating out every day, instead of going out and grabbing a bite to eat, they would rather starve and save the money for when they do get to go home. More often than once; I hear this a lot of the time. What I would suggest to them would be to buy a small crock pot and small electric pan to cook meals, instead of having to eat out. This will not only save them money, but, it will allow them to eat healthier. I for one, would do just this in order to save all the money I could. Having to listen to conversations is something that would be to a surveyors advantage because the surveyor will be able to get valid information and may be able to put this information into a...

...IMPROVEMEMT PLAN FOR SIX SIGMA PROJECT 1. Food quality. Over 60% of respondents to questionnaire survey conducted in December 2010 rated the food in the galley as “excellent” to “outstanding”. Goal: Increase the remaining 40% to reach a 100% satisfaction rate. 2. Upgrade galley décor so that is less “military-style” and more appealing like a restaurant. Goal: When funds are available, make changes in the décor, such as change décor to a southwestern style, repaint interior, and/or add sports memorabilia. 3. Menu selection. Questionnaire survey indicated that customers would like a wider menu selection. Goal: Increase menu selection to provide more variety in healthy meal choices that are pleasing to the customer. 4. Authorization of BAS payments. Some members in the grade of E-4 and below who lived in the barracks were not entitled to receive BAS. Goal: Enforce policy across all NAS Fort Worth JRB organizations to ensure that only those members E-4 and below who are actually entitled to BAS payments receive it. 5. Retirees and civilian employees as regular patrons of the galley. All populations (military, civilian, and retirees) surveyed in December 2010 were very vocal in favor of permitting civilian employees and retirees to eat at the galley on a regular basis. Goal: Identify the true costs incurred to the Navy for allowing retirees and civilian employees to eat at the galley on a regular basis. 6. Control of food costs. From July 2010 to December...

...WestLAND Group used the Leica Nova MS50 to scan the facades of an office building for CGM Development. The scans were used to create models of the building exterior and surrounding topography as a starting point for BIM. WestLAND Group, Inc. was founded in 2000, in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and is a mid-size, well-established firm that provides civil engineering, GIS, surveying and mapping and planning to clients in energy, rail, construction, municipal, and development. The firm is always looking to adopt new technology and quickly developed expertise in CAD, GNSS, and reflectorless/robotic total stations, but until late 2013, they hadn’t done much with laser scanning. “We’d tried renting scanners, and subcontracting LiDAR work, but it didn’t work out particularly well,” said WestLAND’s Vice-President of Geomatics Mike Angelo, EIT, PLS. “We also found that purchasing a conventional scanner was just not cost-effective, as we did not have scanning projects lined up and it seemed difficult to market scanning to existing clients without an instrument readily available and a workflow in place.” Laser scanners are big investments, and WestLAND took its time looking for the right solution. The firm had a definite need; the work they do for railroads often calls for clearance surveys around tunnels and bridges, and point clouds and cloud-based models are ideal for this. But there wasn’t a huge demand; buying a dedicated scanner seemed like too much investment. Also, WestLAND’s topographic...

Ruchi Chopda brings you the details Unlike historically, when MBA applications trend countercyclical to economic conditions, this year, data collected by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) suggests a significant change from previous post-recession patterns. Even as the global economy shows signs of recovery, applications to MBA programmes are rising after a slump of three years. According to the 2012 Application Trends Survey, 51 per cent of graduate business and management programmes surveyed confirmed receiving more applications than last year. Though the growth is displayed in applications across a variety of programme types, including part-time, online as well as specialised master's degrees, it has majorly been fuelled by application gains among online and distance courses. Region-wise, programmes in Asia-Pacific and Central Asia reported the strongest growth in volumes for full-time MBA programmes. Ashish Bhardwaj, regional director, South Asia, GMAC, elaborates, "Looking at different regions of the world, 32 per cent of full-time two-year MBA programmes in the US reported application increases, 37 per cent in Europe reported application increases, 80 per cent of all MBA programmes in China reported application increases and 83 per cent of all MBA programmes in India reported application increases. But, men still beat them in number. According to Sr Wan Maimun Wan Abdullah, President of the Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (ISM), the reason men make up the majority is due to misconceptions by the general public about the surveying profession. ...CASE 4: WHAT DO WE DO WITH HOWARD? Agrigreen, Inc., manufactures various agricultural fertilizers in several plants in the western United States and Canada. Tad Pierson, appointed three months ago as a project engineer at one of the Agrigreen plants, had been told last week by Burt Jacobs, the new manager of engineering to whom he reports, that he was to take on the added responsibility of supervising the plant surveying group. Having worked with members of this group in the past, Pierson was aware of some performance problems and conflicts that existed within the group. Contemplating what action, if any, he should take as their new supervisor, he reviewed the history of the surveying group with others in the company (see Figure 1) and then talked with each group member individually to arrive at the following picture of the situation. Figure 1 Howard Lineberry, Lead Surveyor After receiving his surveyor's certificate from the local civil technologies college. Howard Lineberry had gone to work for the State Highway Department as a chainman. The job hadn't paid very well, and he always felt that the lead surveyor didn't like him and often had him doing work that was better suited for a rodman, a position of lower status than chainman on a survey crew. So, when a job for a lead surveyor had opened up at Agrigreen eighteen years ago, Lineberry had been glad to get it. He told Pierson how excited he had been to be hired into the newly created position. Previously, survey...

...Styles on campus Harley Peterson Recently, there was surveillance done on campus. Three students were selected for this survey; two gentlemen and a lady. The two gentlemen interviewed are in their freshman year, and the lady is a junior. They were surveyed about what they were wearing. In this survey, students were asked if their style changed from high school to college, why they were wearing what they were wearing at that particular moment, and if they thought that their appearance mattered in this environment. The styles of all the surveyed individuals varied greatly. They were asked if they changed their wardrobe from high school to college. The gentlemen both said no, because it was too expensive and they liked what they wore in high school. The lady surveyed said she had to, “style down” because she liked expensive clothes and couldn't afford what she wanted on a college budget. When asked the second question, all responses were very similar. They just woke up and put some clothes on. The lady that was surveyed said that most college kids do just that, and the longer that you are in school, the less you will care. It seemed to the surveyor that the gentlemen were perhaps better dressed than the lady and that they put more effort into getting ready then what she did. Appearance in this environment seemed to vary for everyone surveyed. The lady surveyed said that she had class where she was required to dress up on certain days because she would be in front of the...

...DEVICES/INSTRUMENTS USED IN SETTING OUT A BUILDING ON A CONSTRUCTION SITE Setting out of a building involves marking of a building position, size and shape in terrain to establish all the pegs, lines and levels needed for construction purposes. It can vary from the measurements of angles and distances by a theodolite to the most sophisticated total station and gps. For all this control points are needed .This essay explains how theodolite, gps and total station are used in setting out a building on a construction site. First of all the first task is to establish a base line from which the whole building can be set out. Baseline are located by setting out their terminals. If coordinated the would be set out from a traseverse. The length and width of the baseline can be measured and compared with its compound value .Altenative baseline could be set out with reference to other details such as road center lines, existing buildings etc. once the baseline has been checked , individual building can be located from it . Theodolite uses movable telescope to measure angles in both horizontal and vertical planes they are manual instruments that comes in two types , transit which rotates in full circle in the vertical plane and non-transit, rotation in half-circle.Using a theodolite at point A and sighting to the furthest end of the baseline point B ,turn off a right angle and establish a peg at C .locate a peg at E in similar fashion from B .Check the distance CE . with a theodolite...

...complete registry of natives that can be utilized to haphazardly select individuals for examination. Additionally, the quantity of surveying firms has expanded fundamentally in the course of recent years, making a "Wild, Wild West" environment for popular conclusion research because of the different sorts — and quality — of techniques used to gather information, as indicated by Andrea Perrella, chief of the Laurier Institute for the Study of Public Opinion and Policy. The surveying business is experiencing "dim days," he said. "Less individuals are noting overviews," Perrella clarified. "There is no more a solitary philosophy and even in the most precisely controlled phone surveys, reaction rates are so low we are not very beyond any doubt what those non-respondents are considering." Gone are the days when by far most of subjects had landlines and firms had solid arrangements of individuals they could arbitrarily call. Today, firms need to spend more cash to incorporate cellphone clients in telephone overviews, while different organizations assemble online boards of individuals who volunteer to be requested to answer questions on the web. Surveyors mindful of 'close to emergency's Bluff Zukin, educator of open arrangement and political science at Rutgers University, penned a commentary in the New York Times in June where he said "race surveying is in close emergency, and we surveyors know." In 31 surveys distributed since Sept. 20, the NDP just figured out how to place...
