The Revolutionary War was a war the colonies raged on their homeland of Britain, searching for freedom. The war lasted eight years, from 1775 to 1783. Although it seemed from the beginning of the war that Great Britain had the upper hand, in the end Americans won the revolution.
1775 presented three very important battles at Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill. During the battle of Lexington, British generals had around seven hundred soldiers, while the Americans got together a small army of minutemen. Both armies fought, and the British won. Following their victory, the British decided to send more men to Concord to protect the remaining supplies there. However, when the British got there, American soldiers were waiting for them. This began the Battle at …show more content…
The British were forced to retreat back to Boston. While the Battle of Lexington was a defeat, the Battle of Concord proved that the American army was not just a bunch of unorganized rebels, but rather an army deserving of respect. The Battle of Bunker Hill began when American colonists heard that the British planned to control the an area in Boston overlooking its harbor. Americans brought 1,200 soldiers to fortify Bunker Hill during the night, which stunned the British who dispatched 2,300 troops, and thus just expected to march up the hill and scare colonists away. British troops marched up the hill, but the colonists remained calm and did not open fire, until the British came within range. The British forces broke through the colonists’ line, because colonists ran out of ammunition. Still, this battle was one of the deadliest of the Revolutionary

The American Revolution Gordon Wood Summary

...For example, the loyalist they are a group of people that stayed loyal to Britain through the revolutionary war. All wood talks about how they were treated by the patriots and how many there were in the Americas. “The “Tories” came from all ranks and occupations of the society, a large proportion of them belonged to the upper political and social levels. As many as, 60,000-80,000 were said to leave America and fled to Canada during the revolution,” (The American Revolution p.113) states Wood. Giving little explanation on who this group people really were, other than a summary of who they were to Britain and how the Patriots hated them and the south felt protected by them. As for the women, the author briefly states that, “Women began asserting that rights belonged not just to men, and that if women had rights, they could no longer be thought of as inferior to men,” (The American Revolution p.126). Again, Wood does not elaborate on the women’s equality to men during the revolutionary war or give the women any true credit to the part that they played in the war. Another group affected by the Revolutionary war, are the Native Americans, they have decided to form their alliance with the British and when they are told that the British signed over their fate to the United States. “By the 1780s many western Americans...

The Battle of Iwo Jima

...The Battle of Iwo Jima (19 February – 26 March 1945) was a major battle in which the United States Armed Forces landed and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II. The American invasion, designated Operation Detachment, had the goal of capturing the entire island, including the three Japanese-controlled airfields (including the South Field and the Central Field), to provide a staging area for attacks on the Japanese main islands.[2] This five-week battle comprised some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the War in the Pacific of World War II. After the heavy losses incurred in the battle, the strategic value of the island became controversial. It was useless to the U.S. Army as a staging base and useless to the U.S. Navy as a fleet base.[4] However, Navy Seabees rebuilt the landing strips, which were used as emergency landing strips for USAAF B-29s.[5] The Imperial Japanese Army positions on the island were heavily fortified, with a dense network of bunkers, hidden artillery positions, and 18 km (11 mi) of underground tunnels.[6][7] The Americans on the ground were supported by extensive naval artillery and complete air supremacy over Iwo Jima from the beginning of the battle by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviators.[8] Iwo Jima was also the only battle by the U.S. Marine Corps in which the American casualties exceeded the Japanese, although Japanese combat deaths numbered three times the number of American deaths...

Abigail Adams

...Book Summary of Abigail Adams A Revolutionary American Woman, By Charles W. Akers By phillir The life story of Abigail Adams by Charles W. Akers, records the history about a woman who was an advocate for the rights of women throughout the American Revolution and the big part she played in the career of her husband that helped to persuade our society. The author opens up the story with giving readers information about two former United States Presidents, who both had family ties to Abigail. She was the biological mother to one of these powerful men and the spouse and helpmeet to the other. Readers find out that although she was known by her connection to these two authoritative males, this was a woman who was just as worthy to be known as the man she vowed a martial union with, and the one she brought into this world as her son. The writer then rewinds to ten years earlier before Abigail was born. It is here that we are introduced to Abigail’s parents. William Smith and Elizabeth Quincy who were united in Holy matrimony, and three daughters and one son were born to this union. Abigail was born on November 11, 1744 in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Although Abigail did not go to school, she was taught at home with the help of closely related family members. During this time, the main role of women was to care for their home, husband, and children and not to get involved in the business matters pertaining to men such as, war, commerce, politics and other issues. North Korea War

...Korean War Korean War The Korean War (25 June 1950 - armistice signed 27 July 1953[1] ) was a military conflict between the Republic of Korea, supported by the United Nations, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, supported by the People's Republic of China (PRC), with military material aid from the Soviet Union. The war was a result of the physical division of Korea by an agreement of the victorious Allies at the conclusion of the Pacific War at the end of World War II. The Korean peninsula was ruled by Japan from 1910 until the end of World War II. Following the surrender of Japan in 1945, American administrators divided the peninsula along the 38th Parallel, with United States troops occupying the southern part and Soviet troops occupying the northern part.[2] The failure to hold free elections throughout the Korean Peninsula in 1948 deepened the division between the two sides, and the North established a Communist government. The 38th Parallel increasingly became a political border between the two Koreas. Although reunification negotiations continued in the months preceding the war, tension intensified. Cross-border skirmishes and raids at the 38th Parallel persisted. The situation escalated into open warfare when North Korean forces invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950.[3] It was the first significant armed conflict of the Cold War.[4] The United Nations, particularly the United States, came to the aid of South Korea in repelling the invasion. Center of Gravity Analysis – an Actual or Perceived Problem?

...Swedish National Defence College THESIS 1(55) Major Jonas Andersson 2009-04-06 Thesis – Military Theory, 15 hp Author Course Major Jonas Andersson ChP 07/09 Tutors Kersti Larsdotter Truls Gustavsen Center of Gravity Analysis – an Actual or Perceived Problem? Abstract Centers of Gravity (CoGs) analyses deliver vital input to the operational design. However, there are a great number of theories regarding the phenomenon which can create a certain degree of confusion. The diversity in theories may lead to misdirected mental energy where the focus is to discuss theories instead of using the theories at hand efficiently. The question is if the diversity in theory is an actual problem or if it just perceived as such? This research identifies the similarities and differences in the theories of Milan Vego and Joseph Strange & Richard Iron regarding CoGs, their sub elements and methods for analysis. The impact of the differences on the practical result is then surveyed by implementing the theories on adelimitated phase of the Falklands War, in order to conclude if the differences have a decisive impact on the product of the CoG analysis. The result of this thesis indicates that the diversity in theory is a perceived problem. The identified divergence does not reflect crucially on the CoG analysis and the variation of the input provided to the operational design is minor. The CoGs and the critical vulnerabilities identified are the same or at least similar, no matter which...

To a large extent, the Mongols allowed Russians to maintain their way of life: - Slavic based languages including writing system (Cyrillic) - Orthodox religion The Russians adopted much from Asian culture and this led western Europeans to think less of the Russians Geographically Russia was isolated from the rest of Europe: - Entirely land locked (mostly) - Huge Plains of Eastern Europe prevented overland travel During these early years there were a series of muscovite princes based in Moscow and called themselves Tsars. By the 17th century the Romanov family became the ruling dynasty: - Alexander I (1801-1825) - Nicholas I (1825-1855) - Alexander II (1855-1881) - Alexander III (1881-1894) - Nicholas II (1894-1917) Under the rule of Peter the Great (1689-1728) Russia grew greatly in size and entered the European World www.ibscrewed.org The Russia of 1800 was one of the greatest autocracies in Europe where: - The Tsar’s rule was absolute - There was a small...

Jemaah Islamiya

...Jemaah Islamiya (JI) For decades, the Indonesia-based Jemaah Islamiyah has expounded its idea of amalgamating Indonesia, Malaysia and the southern Philippines into a regional Islamic state. Kumpulan Mujahideen Malaysia also has the same ambition. In October 2002, the United States Government designated the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) a Foreign Terrorist Organization. JI is an extremist group linked to al-Qaida and other regional terrorist groups and has cells operating throughout Southeast Asia. Extremist groups in the region have demonstrated their capability to carry out transnational attacks in locations where Westerners congregate. Terrorist groups do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. Jemaah Islamiya is a Southeast Asian terrorist network with links to al-Qaida. The network plotted in secrecy through the late 1990s, following the stated goal of creating an idealized Islamic state comprising Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the southern Philippines, and southern Thailand. The name Jemaah Islamiyah dates to the late 1970s, but experts aren’t certain if the name referred to a formal organization or an informal gathering of like-minded Muslim radicals—or a government label for Islamist malcontents. The group has its roots in Darul Islam, a violent radical movement that advocated the establishment of Islamic law in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country and also home to Christians, Hindus, and adherents of other faiths. Darul Islam sprang up as...
