...After a surprise German offensive the Battle of the Buldge began. The Germans encircled the 101st Airborne Divison in the Ardennes forrest of Belgium. The movie shows Patton prior to his meeting with Eisenhower to discuss the situation developing in the Ardennes. He has the forsight to have his staff develop plans to disengage from the battle that they were currently in and prepare for three different situations. One of them was to provide relief to Bastonge. His plan was approved and the unfreezing process started immediately due to Pattons vision. The 3rd Army disengaged from their battle and proceeded north to relieve Bastonge. This was a very risky undertaking, but in a mere seven days from inception the 3rd Army relieved Bastonge. It was Patton’s leadership that enabled this operation. As depicted in the movie, he led by example. He was shown leading the troops from the front, walking with the troops, and providing encouragement.
