...lost to him forever. Until, his favorite quarterback gives back to this big time Baylor fan the joy of playing football. A few years ago, Paul Mielke was the fastest player and the star quarterback of the Katy, Texas Youth Football League. “I knew I wanted to play professional football from a young age,” Paul said. Growing up in a family full of Baylor University alumni, Paul dreamed to one day become a Baylor Bear and play quarterback for the well-known football team just like his hero, Robert Griffin III. However, life for the 13-year-old aspiring athlete wasn’t going as planned. Paul’s decreasing health was relevant when the once active teenager became weak and exhausted. In July 2011, Paul was hospitalized and diagnosed with a life threatening heart condition known as Coronary Artery Disease. “It was really hard accepting that I will never be just an average kid again like my friends and because of this disease I’m always going to be different,” Paul said. For the talented athlete, the news that he wouldn’t be able to play football this coming season was the hardest part. This was just the start of Paul’s long battle. In October 2011, doctors informed Paul that the only way of surviving his stage of heart failure was to receive a heart transplant. Around the same time, a dual-threat quarterback named Robert Griffin III was rewriting the record books and leading the Baylor Bears to record-setting wins. He was also developing a devoted fan in Houston, Texas...

...As the owner of of Los Angeles Clippers, Donald Sterling has had allegations of racism from the past and at this percent time. Recently, the media had audio of Sterling expressing terrible things about black people. However, at this point it was brought to the media attention that Donald Sterling has a history of being disrespectful to African Americans. “A top team executive accused Sterling of running the Clippers the Clippers with a “plantation” mentality.” (Shoichet) In 2009, Sterling was accused of wrongful termination by Elgin Baylor. The lawsuit also accused Sterling of “ageism in which he harassed him by making demeaning comments about his age.” (Shoichet) Eventually, in 2011 the racial discrimination claim was dropped and as far as the ageism claim the jury sided with Sterling. In 2006, the Department of Justice brought housing discrimination charges against Sterling’s rental company in Los Angeles alleging that refused to lease to African Americans, Latinos, non-koreans in the Koreatown section in Los Angeles, and families with children. The case was eventually settled in 2009 for $2.725 million because the cost of litigation started exceeding the cost of the settlement. I believe the worst claim of them all was in 2004, when he denied surgery for the assistant coach Kim Hughes. Hughes had found out he was diagnosed with “prostate cancer on the eve of training camp”(Witz) and the surgery wasn’t covered under his health insurance and would cost $70,000. Fortunately...

However, I was very compassionate towards others and was that one friend who was always there to help. My parents and friends would often tell me to “have a spine” and to stand...

...Introduction: The Cause of Establishment The Peking Union Medical College, established by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1917, is located in Dongcheng District, Beijing, China (Peking Union Medical College). The Rockefeller Foundation entered China with the objective of building modern, westernized medical schools in both Peking and Shanghai. It purchased the Union Medical College from the London Missionary Society in 1915 and built a faculty of over fifty professors and upgraded facilities after which it was renamed to the Peking Union Medical College (The Rockefeller Foundation). Both John D. Rockefeller, Sr and his son considered China to be of significant interest, especially after Frederick Gates, their advisor, propelled them to give more attention to that region. The 1914 China Medical Commission, dispatched by the Rockefeller Foundation, carried out a medical education survey which found awfully low standards in medicine education and healthcare throughout the nation. The report concluded that the need for external assistance was great due to scarce resources within the nation (Ninkovich). Thus the China Medical Board, one of the first operating divisions of the Rockefeller Foundation, was founded in 1914 with a focus to modernize medical education and the practice of medicine in China. The actions of the Rockefeller Foundation to improve medicine in China are representative of American benevolence. In 1915, when Paul Reinsch, the US minister to China, heard of the Rockefeller...

...I have always been interested in the brain ever since I stumbled upon the book Gifted Hands by Ben Carson in 8th grade. In the book, Carson described how he removed half the brain in order to resolve seizures in a five year old girl! How could someone live with only half their brain? I was also intrigued by the ambiguity of right and wrong which led me to an interest in medical humanities. Baylor offers me this opportunity to study medical humanities, continue my interest in sports, grow my faith, pursue undergrad research, and to contribute to the community. I love that Baylor has so many options for students like me interested in pre-med. From the Alpha Elipson Delta honor society to specialized dorms just for students interested in...

...Through the process in college searching, three things are certain: every person has an idea of what they want to study, where they want to attend, and what their college experience is going to be like. Well taught professors, comfortable dorms, and good food are all on the checklist. However what I’m looking for in a University is a spirited, outgoing student body, and professors that are down to earth and genuinely care about their students. The quality of the teaching is something I truly care about. I look for professors that will be available throughout the day for extra help and actually teach instead of just lecture. I’ve learned in high school that everyone processes and learns new information in three main cognitive learning styles....

...stuff if it is to glorify God and to have a relationship with Him. On Friday November 1st, 2013, my cousin Charlie and I were on Interstate 30 on the way to Waco, TX. As an alum of Baylor University, Charlie knew the amazing power of Baylor and all the things God does here. However, this was my first time coming to Baylor. I had only known of Baylor for about 3 months. On our way down we prayed. We prayed for clarity, we prayed for wisdom, we prayed for answers and ultimately we prayed for peace. We arrived to the visitors’ center at about 1:00 pm. We had only stopped once to get gas and food. When Charlie parked the car we had one more prayer. I then stepped out of the car and was overwhelmed by the beauty and magnificence of Baylor. I had an overwhelming sense of peace, and right then I knew I was going to attend Baylor University. I had no idea how I was going to pay for Baylor or any other logistics. My dad said no when he saw how much it cost, but I am here now. Like Friesen’s fourth principle says, “when we have chosen what is moral and wise, we must trust the sovereignty of God to work all the details together for good.” I chose to attend Baylor because I felt called to be a Baylor Bear. I believe this decision was my choice and that God worked out all the details for me to be here at Baylor. I had to think long and hard about a personal experience that relates most to the relationship view. Then I realized that my journey this semester is directly related to Smith’s...
