Bank of Canada governor (Stephen Poloz) recommended that unemployed university graduates should “beef up their resumes” by working for free. Also it states that the youth should acquire more experience through unpaid internships and volunteering, in their field of work. Youth with gain learning experience and acquire skills that are essential to their work. 200,000 young adults in Canadians are currently out of work, unemployed, or going back to school for more education. “Get some real-life experience even though you’re discouraged, even if it’s for free” Poloz says. Statistics Canada says that unemployment rate for people aged 15-24 was 13.5 per cent in September, which is almost double Canada’s overall jobless rate, which is 6.8 per cent for the same month. Big firms, like Bell Mobility, are getting involved in programs that recruit hundreds of interns each year to work for free. Some people don’t agree with Poloz’s perspective, mentioning how the governor’s recommendation encouraged people to “subvert” minimum wage laws to gain experience, while others described it as “extremely problematic”. Andrew Langille, a Toronto labour lawyer, mentioned that there simply are not enough jobs for young people coming out of college in Canada. Claire Seaborn mentioned how individuals from modest backgrounds are less likely to be in a position where they can work for free, as they have bills to pay, etc. Unpaid internships benefit the wealthier youth because the individuals from low-income backgrounds just can’t afford to work for free.
