...Career Plan Reflection Paper Alexis Phan BCOM/275 February 5, 2014 Rodney Thirion The career plan building activities actually just confirmed what I already knew about myself. I love to work with and interact with people, I love to help people, I like to deliver results and I can be resistant to change. The activities also taught me things that I didn’t know about myself. I always viewed myself as organized and I learned that I could definitely be more organized. Being organized prevents one from rushing, and one is able to deliver great results as because their work is thorough. I also learned that I value job security and how much a job having the potential for me to grow and learn new things and move up in the organization means to me. This course actually can apply to my current and future career because it taught me how to communicate with people and the importance of communication. How a message is received by the receiver can have a great impact on my patients and potential investors. It taught me that I definitely have a lot to work on when it comes to my nonverbal communication skills such as my body language, gestures, eye contact, etc. My communication skills greatly affected my chances of being re-hired at my previous place of employment after being laid off and this course made me realize that much more. I knew that communication was very important but I don’t think I realized how big an impact it could have on my life. Now when speaking to others...

...Pro Death Penalty Arguement BCM/275 Pro Death Penalty Arguement In the case against the death penalty by the American Civil Liberties Unions I wholeheartedly disagree with their judgment. “The American Civil Liberties Union believes the death penalty inherently violates the constitutional ban against cruel and unusual punishment and the guarantees of due process of law and of equal protection under the law. Furthermore, we believe that the state should not give itself the right to kill human beings – especially when it kills with premeditation and ceremony, in the name of the law or in the name of its people, or when it does so in an arbitrary and discriminatory fashion.”(ACLU.org). How can anyone in their right mind support this fact. When someone breaks the law they pay for it in a system of checks and balances. The United Stated judicial system is perfect its far from being perfect but it is in place to make sure rights of persons are treated fair and equally. All states and the federal government need to have a mindset that if a person’s life in taken by a criminal act then the bearer of the crime should pay the ultimate price. For me I do not see the death penalty as a waste of taxpayer money but as a deterrent to the next generation that if you commit such heinous acts you pay the price. What is wasting the taxpayer money is the process of appeals due to our outdated justice system. How much does it cost for a bullet? How much for a lethal injection? How much does...

...Article Rebuttal Week 3 BCOM 275 Article Rebuttal Work policies or rules are good tools to run a business. At spouse’s workplace, there are two policies or systems that could not agree with. First work policy is with regard to “One mistake and you’re fired.” It is always been observe at work, and this intimidates the workers, especially the Flex, and Part time employees. I do understand of the importance of this kind of policy because this requires a very intense training, patience, and much of common sense, especially in the well-being of the children. Sometimes this policy is not the answer to fix the problem. Because of just a simple mistake, employees are laid off from work. When new employee or someone becomes a “Ratio worker” he or she has to go background check, physical test, and enormous amount of training. In approximately two months, he or she can work with less supervision and considered as a ratio worker. With single mistake, a worker is sent home with no reassurance to return for work or he or she is fired. This I consider an inconsiderate or not reasonable to fire an employee just because of one mistake. The mistake should be weigh according to a degree of seriousness. No guideline or what basis why someone is fired just of a mistake. Everybody makes mistakes because no one is perfect. If the mistake posed a very serious offense it is understandable, but the mistake should serve as the reason for learning to solve the problem in case it...

...Article Rebuttal Kao Saechao BCOM/275 February 9th, 2015 Dr. Sharla Walker Article Rebuttal Vaccination in children has been a touchy topic for today’s society. Do I vaccinate my child and risk life-changing diseases or do I not vaccinate my child and run the risk of other children catching diseases? On one hand, there are parents who decide not to vaccinate their children for the fear of long-term diseases such as Autism and other contaminates. And on another hand, there are parents who whole heartedly in vaccinations for their children. In an article, by S. Edmonson, the author believes that all vaccines are contaminated with diseases. The author believes as such referring to Dr. Maurice Hillerman; the former head of vaccines at Merck. Dr. Hillerman has stated on camera that all of their vaccines were contaminated with a virus. Should parents vaccinate their children? Yes, of course. However, the statement may not be untrue regarding if there are “vaccines contaminated with diseases”, there is still more to the story. What is a Vaccine? A vaccine, in essence, is made from a virus itself; contaminate or disease; if you will. A vaccine may be made from different forms of viruses such as: living or weakened, killed, or segments of other viruses. These different types of vaccines are no different from those we received as children. Varicella (Chicken Pox) is a vaccination most of us have received as children made from living forms of viruses. Other vaccinations...

...Week 3 Assignments Article Rebuttal: Marijuana BCOM/275 September 25, 2012 Gregory Hearnes Article Rebuttal: Marijuana According to Elon (2006), [Smoking a marijuana cigarette deposits about three to five times more tar into the lungs than one filtered cigarette. Smoking three to four joints per day causes as much harm to the respiratory system as smoking a full pack of cigarettes a day. Marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke.] The truth of the matter is that scientific studies show that marijuana is not toxic to humans, and the “overdose” amount is so unrealistic as to be laughable. More people have died from prescription drugs, firearms, alcohol, aspirin, or peanut butter than marijuana. There is no evidence that supports marijuana having ever caused any medical deaths. Alcohol and tobacco are both more addictive and dangerous than marijuana (Hubpages, n.d.) “Accident records from one study showed that up to 12% of non-fatally injured drivers and up to 16% of fatally injured drivers had marijuana in their bloodstream” (Elon, 2006). Just because an individual has marijuana in their bloodstream does not mean that they were under the influence at the time of their accident. Marijuana can show up in the bloodstream over 30 days after actually consuming it. This study is not accurate because it does not show that the individuals...

...Week 3 Individual Assignment - Rebuttal Paper BCOM/275 – Critical Thinking Patty Haynes 07/24/13 Virginia Carter The Rolling Stone magazine has recently been met with a slew of angry outbursts and boycotting for placing the well-known, suspected Boston Bombing Terrorist, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on its cover this month. The magazine is under scrutiny not just for placing his picture on the cover, but for how the picture portrays the suspect. Tsarnaev’s photo is a very glamorous, dreamy eyed, tousled hair, sexier version of himself in the photo. This glorified photo is exactly how The Rolling Stone portrays famous actors and rock stars that are meant to be admired. Harold Maass is the executive editor for an online forum called The Week. He currently posted an article saying that The Rolling Stone shouldn’t be chastised for their choice and it is simply a ploy to sell heaps and heaps of magazines. He states that maybe we shouldn’t be so angry at The Rolling Stone publication because the New York Times posted it on their cover first. Maass also backs up Janet Reitman of The Rolling Stone saying that the only thing that happened here was that he happened to be a huge news feature, and features make the covers of publications. He also agrees with other authors that claim this could help the American public snap out of their daydreams and see that terrorists don’t have to be dirty, rag wearing, foreign language speaking, Muslims. While all of these comments can be boiled...

...Should Abortion be Banned of Japan? BCOM-275 July 3, 2013 Should Abortion Banned in Japan? “Abortion is defined as expulsion of a fetus from the uterus before it can survive on its own” (Encyclopedia Britannica Company, 2013). Even though not many believe that no person has the authority to take another person’s life, and strict religion laws prohibit abortions in Japan under most situations, a women's right to choose to have an abortion should be her choice. Every woman should have the opportunity to determine whether to keep the pregnancy or to abort it. Growing up in today’s society, whether here in United States or in another country, we see parents not capable to raise a child, and a victim of rape or sexual assault nurture a child. Most cases, the child ends up neglected, abused, homeless, hungry, unloved, and grow up to be a problem of the law and society. If the woman knew, and feels in her heart that she is not ready to bear and raise a child, she should have the right to choose, not the State or Religion to dictate or regulate abortion. In some cases, it is better to have fetuses aborted than have them be brought up poor and neglected, were not only will the child suffers but also society when that child develops a higher attraction to crime, alcohol, and drugs. History of Abortions in Japan In early 1900, abortion was illegal in Japan under Criminal Code. This Code prohibits a woman to perform any form of abortion. Any pregnant woman, medical personnel...

...BCOM 275 3/31/12 Week 2 assignment Definition Demonstrative communication is a bi-directional process between both the receiver and the sender where non-verbal communication is the only way of communication involved. In a demonstrative communication, the sender is dispatching a message non-verbally and the receiver is translating it in a way where the correct message needs to be attained. Facial expressions, voice tone and body language/ gestures are the three main types of demonstrative communication. A demonstrative communication message can most likely be interpreted in a negative or ineffective way, where it can also be positive and effective. To ensure proper communication between sender and receiver a simple communication practice as well as education should do it. A sender should always be alert when sending a nonverbal message to another receiver. Demonstrative communication like it was mentioned before is mainly non verbal communication which requires way more thinking and interpretation than verbal communication before it can be expressed. The entire demeanor can affect the way the message is being transmitted in such a communication model. Tone of voice The tone of the speaker’s voice can play the biggest role in a demonstrative communication process. Receivers of the message tend to insist on the way the message is delivered/said rather than what it actually is. “Your Tone Of Voice Affects How People Respond To You” (Filek, 2001, p.1), with that said...

...Fallacies Assignment BCOM/275 Two wrongs make a right is a type of fallacy when one person does something wrong to another, and the recipient, in turn, does something equally wrong back to the original deliverer. In doing so, the recipient doing the second wrong, believe they are justified in doing so because they are getting even or, making the situation right in their own mind. Obviously, in the end, this doesn't make anything right. Instead you would simply have two wrongs committed, often further escalating a situation. This fallacy happens often in my home. Children are a great example of this. There are numerous times where I will hear the words from one of my children, "Well he/she did (such-and-such) to me first." Hearing this statement I immediately know there have been two wrongs committed. The reasoning behind it is that my child is trying to justify to me why, what they did wrong, was justified. Of course, it was not. Once again, the two wrongs simply caused the two siblings to do something they shouldn’t have to one another and solved nothing. Neither was right. Another example that recently was in the local media was about a school shooting that made national headlines. In this case, the shooter was retaliating against other students that had done him wrong about a month ago. The incident one month ago was not only wrong, but illegal, in this case. Students had grabbed the boy in the bathroom and threatened him with a knife stealing drugs from him. Instead...

...James Jackson BCOM/275 Week 2 Assignment Logical Fallacies Analysis 1. Personal attack ad hominem. An ad hominem compares the qualities of the person making a claim to the qualities of the actual claim. It is when it is argued that a claim cannot be true because there is a certain lack of quality in the person providing the claim. With this fallacy, it is not the claim itself being analyzed, but the person making the claim. A “personal attack” ad hominem does exactly that – it attacks the person making a claim in order to set them in a negative light. The thought is that a claim cannot possibly be true if the person making the claim is a “bad person”. We see this in the media all of the time with politics. Often pundits in the media will claim that a politician in the opposing party does not have the “moral authority” to claim something because the politician may have been accused of doing something that the media outlet is reporting as morally wrong. A good example of this was early in Barack Obama’s presidency, and even when he was campaigning. During that time some media outlets would dispute a patriotic statement he may have made. They claimed that he could not be patriotic because there was no proof he was even an American citizen since no one had ever seen his birth certificate. This could also be considered a circumstantial ad hominem, as the media was saying that his claimed circumstances refuted his patriotism. 2. Scare tactics. Scare tactics involve...
