Knowing your audience
The next two messages are released a day after the accident of trapping miners, August 5th,2010.One is by a form of meeting in front of all the Chilean families, the other is a message to all the employees including internal posting. Speaking by the spokesman and watching by the world’s press, the company and Chile government is going to take measures to rescue as more miners as possible. In the other hand, it is also a big warning to the company and employees that we have to take more cautions of working inside the mine. Under the pressure of families and worried employees, they will do everything they can to make sure everybody is safe underneath the protection of people and country.
The communication channel I chose for families are verbal,face-to-face talk in a hotel’s meeting lounge where everyone can relax and accept the accident in a friendly,comfortable environment.Compared to nonverbal channel such as write them letters,it is more formal and serious,it shows the reputation of the company and more persuasive.The channel for employees is a verbal meeting insight and also announcement postings inside the working area to remind them the importance of safety which is more effective and directive.
“Dear friends and families, today we gather you to announce an accident just happened yesterday. Before we getting to the details, I want to share a story with you as our company’s mining representative. To be honest, I am a father of a miner, he is the hardest working person in my family. Having the same situation, I understand what is it feels like that worrying his safety every day and wish everything is ok.However,in the other hand,I am so proud as a father of a miner.He works for our country,our people,to make more resources for all the generations,for keeping our life functional. Although,we can’t deny that how dangerous this job is.In November 19th,2007,there were 27 miners trapped in a 150-year-old gold mine in Austria due to shaft collapsed. With everyone’s effort,they successfully rescued all of them with no injuries after 8am.So I want to remind everyone the history has shown us that there is always a chance to succeed.Now,I want to tell you what was happened and what caused it.There were 33 of them that gone missing, after the first research,they were in 700meters underground and 5km from entrance.There was a collapse happened,and also they have less experience,and mine has been running a long time without single accident report.Lacking of regular safety checking, it is totally our responsibility that cause this accident.The good news came right after the accident happened,we have contacted dozens of countries where we will even have help from the specialists of NASA.Also,our president Mr.Pinera is paying the highest attention and most caring of 33 miners and families.He already asked a team with drilling experts,Chilean Navy,doctors,psychologists. We will make sure that under the drilling process going 24 hours, there are also doctors who are consulted on the strains of prolonged .In the mean time,we will try our hardest to drill through a tube which allow each of you sending letters,even video equipment that they can have a soccer game to watch.And we promise that everyone is having the right amount of food and water to stay stable.If there is any progress going on, we will contact each of you personally to make sure everyone is getting the newest following of the rescue process.In the end,I want to say that we all believe in god, and he brings us hope.When there is a hope,there is a chance.Our hearts and feelings are combined with each other,and we will never give up.”
“As a representative,I want to speak to all employees who are devoting all your effort to our company,to all the people in Chile.First of all,I am sorry to notice and inform you that 33 of our members are trapping underground that some of them might be your closest friends or families also. During the investigation of the accident,we found that the miners don’t have enough experience and also they didn’t do safety check all the way before they going down.It is really important that we all should understand the basic rules of working the machines,checking the conditions and knowing how to cooperate with each other and avoid safety hazard.For now on,we will start a training class that we will go through every single knowledge about how to keep the environment safe and how to team up.We will attach a GPS system to you when you go down to work and every time we will pick the one who has the most experience to be the team leader that is in charge of making sure everybody is in safe condition.And also we will start a new reporting system which requires everyone to report all the running details of all the equipment to make sure they all working fine.It is your responsibility to acknowledge all the principles and safety tips of doing all the work. We will hire a professional supervisor going with you every task and make sure it will be a safe “trip”.And the company just decided to spend a quite mount on giving everyone safety insurance and packet to make sure you are working under safely watch.I want you to know we care about you,not only your health but also your feelings.We want to make sure that you are feeling comfortable to work for us and get the benefit from us too.At last,I will keep every single updated information about rescue to families and employees,and we are looking forward to seeing them any time soon in the future.
