...Demonstrative Communication Kristy D. Lazenby BCOM275 October 3, 2011 Cynthania Clark Demonstrative Communication Demonstrative Communication is best described as how we speak to someone with nonverbal communication. “Verbal Communication only makes up 7% of your message, the remainder is composed of 38% tone and 55% nonverbal cue’s”, according to College of Dupage’s management department.(Livestrong.com) There are many ways that we can affect how people perceive what we are saying or what we are trying to say. Whether written, verbal, or nonverbal we can all have an effect on how communication is demonstrated. When we talk to someone face to face nonverbal means of communication cannot be hidden. The nonverbal signals that we send are equally as important as the words that we speak and the tone of our voice. If we are having a conversation with someone in regards to their performance as an employee, it is good to keep a clear tone, speak clearly and keep our facial expressions to a minimum. When we are dealing with customers, you want to speak with an upbeat and friendly tone, speak clearly and have a happy, smiley expression. By having these positive behaviors when speaking with others you are more likely to get positive results and positive feedback. Our body language can have a huge impact on how the message we are sending is received. If our body language is not engaging, people may see it as we do not have interest and do not want to interact...

...Should Sex Education Be Taught in Schools Laterra Dykes, Nastasia Davis, David Webb, Joy Dobbins BCOM/275 May 29, 2014 Dewayne Acree Sexually active teens are a matter of severe concern in the United States and many other countries. In the past several years many school-based programs have been created for the sole purpose of delaying the beginning of sexual activity. There seems to be a growing compromise that schools can play an important role in providing youth with a knowledge base which may allow them to make knowledgeable decisions and help them shape a healthy lifestyle (St Leger, 1999). The school is the only institution in regular contact with a sizable percentage of the teenage population (Zabin and Hirsch, 1988), with virtually all youth attending it before they initiate sexual risk-taking behavior (Kirby and Coyle, 1997). The idea of sex education is a very controversial subject. Sex education will teach teens about the importance of safe sex. There are two different styles of learning about sex education, which are abstinence and sex education or comprehensive. Comprehensive education discuss abstinence as a choice. Even though, comprehensive sex education teaching abstinence as a choice it still inform the teens about contraception and how to avoid obtaining sexually transmitted diseases. Abstinence education teaches teens about abstinence from sex until marriage. Abstinence education does not discuss but rejects the use of contraception. The difference between...

...Learning Team Reflection Sheritza Howell Maritza Santiago Schalynne Howard Jonathan Boyd Kent Fitch Learning Team Reflection There is a process to correct communication, first is the channel of communication in which we use whether it be face-to-face, phone call, advertisements, email, etc. Second, the delivery of the message is important because, with this you have to be careful to make sure everyone is on the right page. Third, another type of communication is writing, making sure everything is referenced or original writing is necessity for any type of writing especially a formal report. Last, Everything has flaws and communication does have downfalls such as technology, with reading a message more can get lost than actually interacting with the person sending the message. The channels we use as a sender can greatly affect the way the receiver interprets the message. Certain channels should be used for certain messages that way your point is clearly made. Emails should be used when there is time to spare or you are just sending a message that is cut and dry with no immediate response needed. On the other hand, if you do need an immediate response, perhaps making a phone call or setting up a face-to-face would be more suitable. Either way, the channels we use need to fit the message we are sending. For example: if I need to tell my boss that we ran out of something, that would require immediate attention and I would want to call him. If I needed to tell him I needed...

...Pro Side of Debate Summary Team B Annetta Brent, Gloria Sample BCOM/275 February 6, 2015 Andre Samuel, Ph.D. Pro Side of Debate Summary Pro side of the appropriate age to give a child a cell phone There are not many pros when it comes to thinking about purchasing a cell phone for your child. As stated before, some parents consider cell phones for their young children as essential tools for staying in touch and keeping that line of communication open ,some parents give their children cell phones for other reasons. According to, Brayer (2013), “children nowadays get bullied for not “keeping up with the Jonses”. Statistics show that almost 90% of teenagers own a cell phone. It’s easy to imagine a teen not calling a friend because they’re afraid that the friend’s dad will answer the phone. Not having a cell phone can make a child an outcast at school. If your child does have a cell phone, but not a nifty phone case, he might get some flak for it. Whether you like it or not, children can be mean and judgmental”. Gloria and I feel that the best age to give a child a cell phone is at the age of sixteen. For some, at that age a level of maturity should kick in. Some will take the responsibility of having a cell phone as a serious deal and some will not. As kids of the “old school era” some of the parents back then could not afford cell phones for themselves not to mention trying to purchase cell phones for a house full of kids and as kids back then we dare not ask...

What was the misunderstanding that occurred: In situation 1 I was told I had met my quota and therefore was in the clear and was guaranteed employment for another year regardless of future quotas. Two days later I was fired because I was told I did not meet my quota and the standards had changed and I did not fall in the proper sales I needed to be in order to keep my job. Even though this change was never told to me. In situation 2 the misunderstanding was the day I needed to switch with my coworker. She thought I said Monday when I said Tuesday and therefore she showed up on the wrong day. I ended up having to go in anyway. 6. How could the misunderstanding have been avoided: In situation 1 I feel I communicated with my manager as best that I could but I probably should have communicated further with higher management. ...Resource: “Over 30 Workers Trapped After Chilean Copper Mine Collapse” article found in the Electronic Reserve Readings. Research additional articles and information about the Chilean mine collapse. There was much press coverage of this disaster. Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper using this (the assigned article) and other articles as a resource. Because communications must be designed with the audience in mind, answer the following questions: • What are some considerations to remember given the different roles and people in the audience? o What would be the potential needs of the families of the miners in receiving a message about this incident? o What would be the potential needs of the company’s employees when receiving a message about this incident? • What actions must you take before and after the message is delivered to ensure that it was received as intended? Please ensure that you answer this question as well as the above questions. Format the paper consistent with APA guidelines. Draft two communications from the mining company announcing the accident, using what you have learned about the audience and effective messages. One communication should be directed to the families of the trapped miners and the other as an internal news release to employees in the company. For both, identify the most appropriate channel—face-to-face, e-mail, video, memo, and so on. Important note: These two communications are included in the...

...Marie Seals Week 1 Individual Assignment Complete Assignment 1.1 from Ch. 1 of Communicating in the Workplace. Choose two misunderstandings you experienced and fill out the chart for these. Respond to questions 1 and 2 shown under the chart for each example of a misunderstanding. In your response, include the following: • Cite a meaningful misunderstanding rather than a general or less material misunderstanding. • Use business- or work-related examples rather than personal ones. • Identify the roles of the sender and receiver, such as manager, peer, subordinate, client, vendor, and so forth One misunderstanding I experienced when communicating with someone at work is when one of my co-worker, Rhonda had a pack of crackers in her desk and when she came back to work on Monday they were gone. Another co-worker, Marsha and I had worked that weekend. During our time of working I went to our vending machine and didn’t have enough money for what I wanted so I got a pack of crackers. When I came back I stated that I didn’t have enough money so I got a pack of crackers. When Rhonda said something about her crackers missing Marsha that I worked with that weekend mentioned that I had a pack of crackers over the weekend. She suggested that maybe I took them because I went to the machine and didn’t have enough money to get what I wanted. Who was the sender? Me Who was the receiver? Marsha What was the message? ...* BCOM275 Wk 3 Homework * * * My ideal work culture is amongst the men and women of the armed forces. The environment of military members around is a comfort zone that appeals to me. With that being said, it’s a discipline and a level of respect that I used to. As for the survey with University of Phoenix, it has provided me with a work culture of supportive, expert, and well resourced. In my view all these category headings can fit within my ideal work setting. * Knowing my work culture and which appropriate channel to use for communication is quite important. In the military, depending on your career of choice a lot of emailing is put into place. I find it as common practice as for these days and times that emailing serves as receipt of what has been communicated. Date, time, and if the message was received or not is etched into the memory of a computer data base. This serves as a fallback or point of reference. As verbal communication face to face is the preferred method, a lot can be lost in the translation. Not to say that emailing cannot have flaws such as ineffective explanations through writing, but one could follow it as a form of instructions. * Body language intertwined with verbal communication is how I normally express * my thought, but amongst military ranks it frowned upon. Talking without using my hands is very difficult for me, but I tend to manage. * Improvements within my communication have to more or less be done in...

...Audience Paper and Communication Release An important aspect of effective communication is to know who is receiving sending the message to be sent. Some agree that the best way to communicate a message is to sit down and write as it were written for a personal reference. This could result in a creative message but may not result in an understood or accepted message. The audience should be a consideration from the beginning. A good message should have a goal whether it is to inspire, give information, give direction, or persuade the audience. If the goal of the message is not clear, the audience will not understand the message, thus an ineffective message. On August 5, 2010 in northern Chile, a San Jose copper mine collapsed, encasing 33 miners underground. When the news of this collapse spread, every person around the world was captivated with the story. In early communications, it was unclear how long it would take to bring the miners up and was estimated to be approximately four months. The reaction to this communication brought a human frenzy as people pondered the thought of underground and buried alive. A total of 69 days had passed before the first miner saw the daylight giving the world a sigh of relief. The chances of survival for these miners were in the hands of those planning and strategizing over the rescue. It was the communication of the Chilean Government, who realized their limitations, to quickly recruit the assistance of organizations that could...

...Debate Topic Summary Raj Master BCOM/275 March 23, 2015 Dr. O Pro Side Debate Summary The pro side debate summary related to the illegal immigrants being allowed to apply for a California driver’s license has several advantages. Our learning team discussed the pro side of this topic which has been considered a highly controversial subject. In 2013, the state California passed Bill AB60, which took effect in 2015 which allows illegal immigrants to apply for a driver’s license. According to Berman, when he signed the law last year, Gov. Jerry Brown (D) praised it as a way to show that these Californians did not have to hide. “No longer are undocumented people in the shadows,” he said. “They are alive and well and respected in the state of California.” Brown’s office also noted that the law explicitly prohibits these licenses being used for any sort of investigation or arrest based on immigration status. The new law makes California one of the 10 states, along with Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, to give out licenses this way, according to the National Immigration Law Center. (Berman, 2015) The bill was written by Assemblyman Luis Alejo (D-Salinas). The assemblyman represents a district which is a center of the agricultural industry with a flourishing populating of illegal immigrant farm workers. According to ProCon.org, the law requires the DMV to issue a California driver's license to anyone who can satisfactorily establish California residency. If...

...Knowing your audience Yinan Edwards BCOM275 2/15/14 Randi Plante Knowing your audience The next two messages are released a day after the accident of trapping miners, August 5th,2010.One is by a form of meeting in front of all the Chilean families, the other is a message to all the employees including internal posting. Speaking by the spokesman and watching by the world’s press, the company and Chile government is going to take measures to rescue as more miners as possible. In the other hand, it is also a big warning to the company and employees that we have to take more cautions of working inside the mine. Under the pressure of families and worried employees, they will do everything they can to make sure everybody is safe underneath the protection of people and country. The communication channel I chose for families are verbal,face-to-face talk in a hotel’s meeting lounge where everyone can relax and accept the accident in a friendly, comfortable environment.Compared to nonverbal channel such as write them letters,it is more formal and serious,it shows the reputation of the company and more persuasive. The channel for employees is a verbal meeting insight and also announcement postings inside the working area to remind them the importance of safety which is more effective and directive. “Dear friends and families, today we gather you to announce an accident just happened yesterday. Before we getting to the details, I want to share a story with you as our company’s mining...

Myself What was the message? My Sargent was trying to communicate directions to me of the medical building I had to drop this urgent lab paperwork off to. What channel was used to send the message? Face to face conversation What was the misunderstanding that occurred? His directions on what building to go to was clear, but as for where exactly I was supposed to drop off the lab paperwork off at when I finally got there was not so clear. All he had said was to “Drop the papers of at the first clinic to the right, once you walk in the building, you can put them in their box.” So I did exactly that. I ended up dropping the papers off to the wrong clinic though because it was supposed to be dropped off at the women’s clinic and I dropped it off at the primary clinic. The clinics had switched their locations in the hospital a week earlier. I didn’t know because when you drop off paperwork, you drop it in a drop box, which it only said drop box. Therefore, since it was dropped off at the wrong location, it was not processed correctly, which made it late for the Commander. Since this happened, the Commander had to locate the paperwork, get it to the right location, and have them expedite it back to him. I ended up finding out that the paperwork was for a solider that was wounded. How could the misunderstanding...
