...Demonstrative Communications Jeremy Gill BCOM275 5/18/2012 Kamal Faour Demonstrative Communication Demonstrative communication is explained as the process of sending and receiving messages from a sender to a receiver by expressing how he or she may be feeling and thinking and involves exchanging thoughts, messages, or information. People communicate in different ways, with the three typical types being verbal, nonverbal and visual (Nayab, 2011). We present limited or non-engaging body language; others may interpret that as not having an interest in the interaction. That perception may not be accurate but that is how it may be viewed. This can have a serious impact particularly when during job interviews, client introductions, working with colleagues or networking (SIR,LLC 2012). Demonstrative communication reinforces verbal communication. For example, dressing properly, a firm handshake and a friendly demeanor can speak volumes about the kind of person someone may be at a job interview. If done correctly the interviewer may see that this person is serious about the job in which they are interviewing for. A person can rely on these qualities to reinforce his or her verbal performance. When a person meets someone for the first time, they can tell if the other person is friendly, not only because they say hello, but because they smile, maybe they extend a hand invoking a handshake, and face him or her. One of the many facets of communication is demonstrative that include nonverbal and unwritten communication. Nonverbal and unwritten communication consists of body language, facial expressions, tone (vocal variations), and personal style. Author’s Cheeseboro, O’Connor, and Rios (2010) stated (p.7-9) that there are seven types of nonverbal variations of communication: chronemics (use of time), proxemics (use of space), oculesics (eye contact), kinesics (gestures and facial expression), haptics (touch), vocalics (vocal variations), and personal style. Chronemics is how people regard time. Cultural differences and a person’s own sense of timing can influence this. How much time it takes to communicate a message can affect its meaning. Proxemics refers to the distance you stand when talking to others as well as how you regard territory. Different cultures have different variations to the distance they stand when speaking to others. I never did understand how anybody could be pro-abortion but preach others to take responsibility for their actions. So many women look at sexual intercourse as a recreational sport because there is an easy way out. Free clinics and most physicians’ offices you go to offer free birth control options and protection. Why would you not want to take advantage of that? The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate than any other country. “About 820,000 teens become pregnant each year.” (Teen Help 2013) My cousin, a sophomore in high school, once told me that her friends were all sexually active because they knew there was a way out if they were to get pregnant. Is that the message we are trying to send our children? That they do not have to take responsibility for their actions? If these so called “concerned mothers” that petitioned to have all contraceptives removed from the school would take a step back and look at the bigger picture, they would see that just because they removed contraceptives does not mean that these teenagers are going to stop.
