...Note: Attempt Any Four Case Studies Case I THE STRATEGIC ASPIRATIONS OF THE RESERVE BANK OF INDIA The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is India's central bank or 'the bank of the bankers'. It was established on April 1, 1935 in accordance with the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The Central Office of the RBI, initially set up at Kolkata, is at Mumbai. The RBI is fully owned by the Government of India. The history of the RBI is closely aligned with the economic and financial history of India. Most central banks around the world were established around the beginning of the twentieth century. The Bank was established on the basis of the Hilton Young Commission. It began its operations by taking over from the Government the functions so far being performed by the Controller of Currency and from the Imperial Bank of India, the management of Government accounts and public debt. After independence, RBI gradually strengthened its institution-building capabilities and evolved in terms of functions from central banking to that of development. There have been several attempts at reorganisation, restructuring and creation of specialised institutions to cater to emerging needs. The Preamble of the RBI describes its basic functions like this: '...to regulate the issue of Bank Notes and keeping of reserves with a view to securing monetary stability in India and generally to operate the currency and credit system of the country to its advantage.' ...Indian Railways – A monopoly Abstract In economics, monopoly (from Greek monos (alone or single) + polein (to sell)) exists when delivery of a particular product or service is completely controlled by an individual or an enterprise. This is in contrast to monopsony where there is only one buyer of a particular product or service; however there can be more than one provider. It is also different from cartel (a form of oligopoly) wherein several providers establish an institution and coordinate their actions and services. Indian Railways is the state-owned railway company of India having more than 64000 Kilometers of track and 6909 stations. It has the world’s 4th largest railway network after that of United States, Russia and China. It carries over 20 million passengers and 2 million tons of freight daily. It is one of the world’s largest commercial employers with more than 1.6 million employees. It owns over 200000 freight wagons, 50000 coaches and 8000 locomotives. Indian railways hold monopoly in rail transport in India. Source of their market power can be attributed to following factors 1. Capital Intensive venture, which can be understood from the fact that Indian railways has a separate budget each year 2. Economies of scale, as Indian railways operate all over India and thus have sufficient operating domain to achieve economies of scale which a new entrant cannot easily replicate 3. Government rules and regulations Indian railways has a position, which is...

...India should privatise railways for better efficiency India’s booming economy which is considered one of the fastest growing in the world demands better performance in transportation, especially when it comes to the case of gigantic sloth of Indian Railways (IR)! The behemoth public sector enterprise runs more than 18,000 trains daily and is comfortably one of the biggest rail networks in the world. However, it is yet to economise on the concept of modernisation and automation. In order to make the system more efficient, most of the nations across the world have privatised their mass transportation system. Undoubtedly, a better experience of travelling and transport can only be achieved by private participation and eventually it will also enhance the bottomline that has been looming at $48 billion as of 2009. IR currently suffers from dearth of resources. Sadly, the infrastructure and manufacturing capacity available to IR is never enough to meet the increasing demand of locomotives and wagons! Nor does India stand a chance to meet the international safety standards, efficiencies and finesse of the railway services of Europe and North America! The service efficiency post-privatisation in aviation sector should be replicated by IR for better management. The main chasm between the promise and the delivery is created by the monopoly of IR. Undeniably, competition in Europe has enhanced railway services there in abound. In India, it is astonishing to note that even manufacturing...

...Immigrants at Central Station, 1951 The first poem in Peter Skrzynecki’s Immigrant Chronicle is set in Sydney’s main railway station. As it is dated “1951” it is some years after the arrival of the Skrzyneckis here in Australia and also provides us with the context of the poem. The first lines of the poem, “It was sad to hear the train’s whistle this morning...” induces sadness whereas it usually induces joy. This tell us that the Skrzyneckis were sad almost certainly due to the fact that they were about to travel into the unknown. The imagery in the first stanza is a depressing one, “All night it had rained.” The poems tone here is mournful. As the poem goes on it says, “But we ate it all...” This is used metaphorically for positiveness. No matter how gloomy, they enjoy it. In the first line of the second stanza it says “Time waited anxiously with us...” The technique of personification is used to emphasise that the immigrants waited although they did not exactly know what they waited for. “And spaced hemmed us...” depicts the crowded station on that fateful night. Skrzynecki and his family are crowded together, “Like cattle bought for slaughter.” This is a very strong simile in which Skrzynecki is illustrating the appalling and crowded conditions in which the immigrants are experiencing. In the second stanza, it says that the immigrants stood with their families, “Watching pigeons that watched them.” This portrays an image that the immigrants are fascinated by the native...

We know that she is an iris woman who has lost her family. We are told that Annie’s seventeen years old brother Robbie was beaten to death – “The coroner said he thought a car had hit him: after the beating, he said, when he had been left on the road” Their mother are in a lot of grief, because of her sons dead, and six months after the murder she all of a sudden dies – “Mum lasted six months of barely speaking, food hardly passing her lips. She dropped like a stone one day in the kitchen; never spoke again”.After that it was just Annie and her dad for twenty years, until his lungs gave away, and he died too. Annie has a boyfriend named Thomas. After the meetings and jibes from her father about Thomas, it downs on her, that her and Thomas aren’t going to last. –“We didn’t last. Everything what happens in the surrounding is the expression of flow of energy in one of the forms. But in this fast moving world, population is increasing day by day and the conventional energy sources are lessening. The extensive usage of energy has resulted in an energy crisis over the few years. Therefore to overcome this problem we need to implement the techniques of optimal utilization of conventional sources for conservation of energy. My paper includes how to utilize the energy which is wasted when the vehicles passes over a speed breaker. Lots of energy is generated when vehicle passes over it. We can tap the energy generated and produce power by using the speed breaker as power generating unit. The kinetic energy of the moving vehicles can be converted into mechanical energy of the shaft through rack and pinion mechanism. Then, this mechanical energy will be converted to electrical energy using generator which will be saved...

...W. Awdry is the author of the stories. They were first made to entertain his sick son Christopher Awdry when he was a child. Soon, with persuasion from his wife, Rev. W. Awdry has the stories published as “The Railway Series” around the time of World War II. The books were a hit and sold millions of copies. One day a business woman named Britt Allcroft came to see Rev. Awdry. She stated that she loved the books so much that she wants to make a television show using the stories and characters he has made. Thus, Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends was brought to the world of television in 1984. I never grew up with the original stories; I grew up with the television show and the books based off stories from the television show. However, I was drawn to the show because of how real Thomas looked. Thomas was a live-action show used with model trains that were based off of the trains that Rev. Awdry had seen with his son Christopher. When Rev. Awdry designed...

...English Essay “How to be Good” is written by Nick Hornby in 2001, and they store is about an average family. One day the narrator, whose name is Katie, is in a dilemma. Her husband David has given their son’s computer away to the women’s refuge: without consulting her or their two kids. David thought it was greedy to have two computers in the house when those women and their children didn’t even have one. This action of David’s has, inevitable, made the children upset, because they now have to share one computer, instead of having their own. Katie ends the argument with the following statement ‘’you can’t blackmail your own children like that’’ In the end all parts calm down, and David manages to see that he has made a mistake and he apologizes. But there is still something that bugs Kate. A part of Katie wants the computer back, because it was a Christmas present to her son and they worked really hard to buy it, but another part of her knows that her husband only did a good deed with good intentions. She is also doing something for the greater good by helping those women and letting them keep Tom’s computer. This is concluded from the following quotation; “I don’t know what to say (…) What is there for me to be angry about?” (pp. 1, lines 31-33). Here she asks herself how she can be angry, when David just did a decent thing. This is the first part where you can see she is in a bit of dilemma. Katie is in conflict with herself because she does not know what to do and...
