Signifying that Jonathan didn’t support puritan beliefs even tough he was considered one. He was part of the first great awakening that rejected puritan ideas, and spread the idea of christianity and how pre-destination does not exist. In the sermon he says: O sinner, consider the fearful danger you are in it is a great furnace of wrath, a wide an bottomless pit, full of the fire of wrath, that you are held over in the hand of God.(Sinners in the Hand of an angry...

...Hughes’ short story, “Thank You Ma’am” he shows the importance of mercy through his two main characters, Roger, a young poverty-stricken boy, and Ms. Luella Bates Washington Jones a large compassionate woman. In the beginning of the literary work, the author wrote that Roger snuck up on Mrs. Jones and attempted to steal her pocketbook, but his mission failed when the wide women simply turned and gave him a kick in his jean’s sitter. However, she later forgives the vulnerable boy’s actions and takes him to her house where Luella would feed and care for him. Although forgiving one another can be extremely tough, “Thank you, Ma’am” demonstrates the practice of forgiving people out of their kindness of your heart, even if they have harmed you. Furthermore, in Langston’s work, he stresses the significance of being compassionate through the protagonist, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. After almost having her pocketbook stolen, she puts herself in Roger’s shoes and feels sympathy for Roger, which...

...master’s program. The class has been pretty interesting so far and each class has been filled with plenty of good discussions and debate. Recently we read a book chapter by Rushworth Kidder called “The Ethics of Right versus Right.” (If you’re interested, the full chapter is actually available for free from the Institute for Global Ethics, although you do have to sign up to get access to it.) Tough choices and ethical dilemmas are often very hard to make. What makes these decisions hard, according to Kidder, is that they are often choices of “right” vs. “right.” Both possibilities have value and merit, yet one must be picked over the other. (Now, this doesn’t mean that there aren’t still right vs. wrong choices. These just aren’t ethical decisions.) The most interesting part of this chapter was that Kidder names four basic paradigms that encompass most of these ethical dilemmas, the right vs. right choices. Ethical choices often involve decisions between: Individual versus community Truth versus loyalty Short term versus long term Justice versus mercy These four basic paradigms can be useful for analyzing ethical choices and realizing what has created the conflict. If you have a better understanding of a choice, then you should be better prepared to solve it. Ethical questions arise all the time in both animal training and in animal rescue work. I’ve been thinking recently of some of the ethical questions I’ve run into and how they fit into...

...memory moment, aha moment, tough questions, and words of the wiser are all examples of signposts. Of Mice and Men is a novella about two migrant workers who travel from place to place looking for new work opportunities. By integrating again and again, tough questions and words of the wiser into Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck has developed a suspenseful novella. Throughout the book, Lennie tends to accidently kill many of the things he touches. He fails to acknowledge his personal strength over the feeble. All the mice that Lennie killed overtime represents the advantage between the strong and the weak. Lennie doesn’t mean to kill his own puppy or Curley’s wife but he can’t fix his same routine. He enjoys petting furry, soft things but sometimes puts a little too much force, killing the poor creatures. “’He was so little,’ said Lennie. ‘I was jus’ playin’ with him…an’ he made like he’s gonna bite me…an’ I made like I was gonna smack him…an’…an’ I done it. An’ then he was dead.’” (Steinback 87). The author made Lennie’s character...

...caught diseases on the ship ride over and died, and the rest who survived were left to the mercy of sometimes cruel masters in harsh conditions. Slavery began in 1619 when African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, as laborers to help grow crops such as tobacco. Slavery helped build America’s economy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In 1793, the growing number of cotton crops in the South made the importance of slavery even stronger. In about the mid- nineteenth century, America started growing westward. Abolitionists in the North thought it was inhumane to use and treat slaves as objects, and the conflict between the North and the South became the American Civil War in 1861-1865. This war led to the freedom of over four million slaves. Slavery truly ended when the thirteenth Amendment was confirmed on December 6, 1865. Indentured servitude and slavery were very similar to one another. They were both treated more as property than human beings. Many times the owners treated slaves more harshly. Both slaves and indentured servants had horrible conditions along the way to the New World and many died or got severely sick, bringing disease into the New World. Both groups could be physically punished by their owners. They had no control over how they could work, and did not get paid. However, when indentured servants were going through tough times they would think about their future and that would bring them comfort. Indentured servants...

..."Procedures and Prosecution." Please respond to the following: • Evaluate United States v. Agurs. Another very important public policy issue is an appreciation for the difference between obtaining a high conviction rate or being perceived as “tough on crime,” and seeking justice. Debate your position on the death penalty regarding whether it is used for justice or for other purposes. Support your position with examples or evidence. The book states that in “both civil and criminal trials a party must share information according to pretrial orders or in response to the other party’s discovery requests” (Szypszak, 2011, p. 211). I believe that the death penalty is just as bad as the crime that was committed. I believe that people deserve the right to have their life changed in a manner that only those that have true understanding of grace and mercy and forgiveness can understand such a judgement is not up to me or anyone and I will forever stand by that. • In the text, it states that “the (Supreme) Court has agreed that the death penalty can be constitutionally sustained only if its imposition is consistent with ‘evolving standards of decency’.” With so many juveniles committing heinous crimes, take a position and debate as a public administrator on whether you think the death penalty should be allowed for juveniles? Use the e-Activity case as a reference for discussion. I am against the death penalty for juveniles no matter the age. I can not face the possibility...

...Stefan Arsenovic 11/9/2015 Immigrants perception Why a Mercy Education After viewing the immigration videos regarding various immigrants all over the world, my perception on immigrants has greatly changed due to several reasons which all revolve around me not being able to recognize their hardships, and putting myself in their situation. After watching those videos, 4 main reasons led to me changing my perception towards immigrants, which were 10 them being forced to move, 2) how tough of a journey it was for them to get there, 3) biasness of people towards immigrants and 4) low aspirations due to the hardships they faced back home. Firstly, the main reason why I am not feeling empathy for immigrants is because I never really understood the reason behind them leaving their countries. A large percentage of immigrants are forced to move away from home due to many reasons, such war and economic situation or maybe better opportunities; which in term makes their journeys unpleasant, as they are often rushed out their homes forced to leave everything behind. Secondly, the reason why I don’t understand immigrants is because I never really knew how biased people are towards immigrants due to the fact that they don’t speak the native language which in term limits their opportunities. From my point of view the main aspect people need to understand about immigrants is the fact that they are forced to move to different countries, where they don’t speak their native language...

Drawing on the article, “The Saints and The Roughneck”, by Chambliss, the community saw or labeled the Roughnecks as criminals and tough who are heading for trouble. Their assumption concerning the Roughnecks was based on what the community thinks they see and that is because, they were always seen by the community at places in the street of the town and drinking and making fun of girls who walk by. They again consistently be seen arguing with the police. One specific example is when the police picked up some of the roughnecks for stealing, mostly small stuffs of which the community thinks it will lead to big stuff like armed robbery and stuff....
