...The quality of written work is important. First, the caveat! I entreat those of you who are seasoned and excellent writers to not be offended by my comments below. You may rightly think that you don't need a mini-lecture on writing. Please bear with me. Read through the comments and use the ones you find to be relevant. As you might suppose, I have high expectations for the quality of writing produced by learners at the undergraduate level. I believe how well you state something is integral to the soundness of the content you are conveying; the two are intertwined. Imprecise or ungrammatical writing signals lack of conceptual crispness. "Good thinking" and "bad writing" usually do not coexist. In the workplace, excellent writing gets people's attention. Good writing signals leadership potential. Good writing is hard work. Each of you has had training in writing, and some of you know what the principles are. Putting them in practice is the challenge. If I had to boil down into a single thought or phrase what I think is most essential to effective writing, it would be this: attention to detail. Think precision. Precision is both a process and a product. Be sure your grasp of the English language is complete and correct. Here is an example of a common misuse of a word: "In today's discussion, we are going to hone in on the early weeks of the Civil War." The word "hone" means sharpen, as in sharpening a knife. It is the wrong word to use in the context above. A correct...

...Every year, around 300,000 students from over 100 countries across the world are found heading to Australia for their studies. Australia is also home to five out of the 25 most livable cities across the world. Insofar as Nepalis students are concerned, the country had stood third after the United Kingdom and the United States in the list of most sought-after academic destinations just a few years ago. Now, however, it has climbed to the top spot. The fact that Australia boasts world-class academic institutions, part-time and post-study work facilities and a relatively safe environment insofar as the students’ investment is concerned are what have made it the most preferred place for higher study at present. Records from Nepal’s Department of Scholarship at the Ministry of Education show that of the around 15,000 No Objection Certification Letters have been issued for 64 countries in the last eight months of the current fiscal year, 8,959 have been for Australia alone. The number of Nepali students opting for an Australia n education had soared in the year 2007-2009, but dropped significantly thereafter when the Australia n government issued stricter visa regulations for students. The adoption of the streamlined visa policy (SVP) two years ago, however, has raised figures once more. It was in order to ensure that only genuine students are given opportunities to pursue higher education that the Australia n government had introduced the new visa policy for international students...

...typically a short summary of the contents of the document.] | I’ve lived in Connecticut my whole life and until now I was unaware of its geological history. Admiring the landscape of the state has always been one of my great pleasures. When I traveled around the country I would compare the natural wonders of each state to my own. Besides the rocky mountains in Colorado and the white mountains of New Hampshire few places match Connecticut’s regal terrain. Growing up in Bristol I would hike up to Pinnacle Mountain in Plainville, my friends and I would stand in awe of the magnificent rock structures. In the summer I would go on vacation to Old Lyme, it was there I fell in love with the earth’s most beautiful contrasts, the ocean meeting the rock and vice a versa. But until now I never educated myself on how all this magnificence came about. In this paper I will chronologically describe the eras and events that formed Connecticut’s geologic history. The oldest rocks provide a window through time telling a story of continental collisions so powerful that they raised mountains thousands of feet high. Others reveal evidence of a slow but constant attack from the elements that wore down those same majestic peaks (Mchone 2004). Giant monoliths stand testament to a time when the earths crust was cracked and lava flowed over the state. Beaches and enormous boulders are the remains of when Connecticut was frozen beneath a sheet of ice (Mchone2004). The Archeozoic...

According to John B. Taylor in November 2008, which states that, “the empirical research he presents in his paper strongly suggests that specific government actions and interventions should be first on the list of answers to all three questions that he posed, which were; What caused the financial crisis? What prolonged it? Why did it worsen so dramatically more than a year after it began?” Problem Definition Century National...

...Introduction This paper is an analysis of the “The Bathtub Period” using Earned Value Management principles. My intention is to discuss the case from the standpoint of the project manager and provide facts, assumption and a conclusion on whether this project was actually a good investment for Park industries or not. In the case where mathematical figures were not provided I have used my own in attempt to provide some cohesiveness to the analysis of this case. Case Summary In January 1987, Park industries was awarded a ten (10) month Research and Development (R&D) project by Scott Corporation. If this initial R&D project was successful there would be follow-on contracts awarded for the next five (5) years. The understanding was that this follow-on projects would be negotiated yearly as part of contract. Jerry Dunlap was selected as the project manager for this project under the supervision of his manager Frank and indirect supervision by the general manager. The Park industries organization uses a matrix culture which means that resources are shared amongst the organization’s project. For the Scott Corporation project, Jerry was provided with seven (7) full-time employees including himself and an additional eight (8) employees from the functional departments – of these eight employees four (4) are full time and the other four are part-time. Jerry calculated the cost of his employees for the next ten (10) months at $2080 with each individual valued at $60 a head. The...

May 2007 Wildlife Biology Conservation of leopard in Ayubia National Park, Pakistan Director: Dr. Daniel H. Pletscher Large carnivores are important for biodiversity and ecosystem function, yet are very difficult to conserve because of their large home ranges and conflicts with humans. I examined human-leopard conflicts in and near Ayubia National Park, Pakistan, to provide management recommendations for the conservation of leopards. Persecution of leopards by humans has been on the rise primarily due to depredation on livestock and risk to human lives. Since 1989, 16 humans have either been killed or injured in and around Ayubia National Park while leopards faced 44 human-caused mortalities during the same period. I examined the management strategy adopted by NWFP Wildlife Department for leopard conservation, identify gaps, and suggest possible management actions to mitigate the conflicts. For this purpose, I reviewed the management of carnivores including mountain lions, wolves, and grizzly bears to learn from management successes...

...are prey to subtle discrepancies that arise in cognitive accounting and identifying how and when you are susceptible is an important step in improving the decision making process (Tvorik, 2014). This paper will consider why people value gains and losses differently in different circumstances by addressing what mental accounting is and how it impacts consumer decision making; and how a company can take advantage of their consumers’ mental accounting (Tvorik, 2014). This writer will also consider different scenarios from differing points of view; as a marketer and as a consumer. As a marketer, this writer will analyze how I would frame certain decisions to benefit from the disparities in my own cognitive accounting. As a consumer, I will address how to avoid the pitfalls posed by the inequalities of again, my own cognitive accounting (Tvorik, 2014). Mental accounting is a term that describes how people categorize and quantify economic outcomes (Thaler, 1980). This is similar to financial accounting in the way of using a system of debits and credits and affects how people spend and save their money, thus consumer decision-making. Mental accounting determines “when an individual chooses to act or postpone a purchase, how he or she perceives gains and losses, and how timing bears on the individual’s choices” in relation to the three mental buckets: current income, current wealth and future income (Tvorik, 2014). It is a figurative, or mental, balance sheet that compartmentalizes...
