...Become a Critic Unfamiliar with the movie “I Am Sam,” I recently thought I would see it. “I Am Sam” tells the story of the financial struggle of a father who is determined to raise his daughter by himself. The hardest part in this situation is that the father is mentally handicapped and lives with just his daughter. However, he still manages to raise her. Directed by Jessie Nelson, this film encourages society to think differently when choosing who deserves to possess and care for a child. The law can try to state that mentally handicapped individuals are incapable to raise a child, but this movie, “I Am Sam,” disproves that. At his daughter’s seventh birthday party, Sam loses ownership over his daughter because of an incident that happened just as a social worker happened to arrive. A sympathizing lawyer finds Sam and fights to help Sam keep his daughter so that his daughter is not lost to him for the rest of his life. Friends of Sam, who knew him before the birth of his daughter, testify on his behalf. While doing so, they have to prevail over their own handicap issues. Because this trial is long and tedious, Sam’s daughter is taken to a foster family to care for her in the meantime. Not only has Sam lost his daughter, for now, but he is also receiving harsh criticism from the foster parents. They despised him and would not let him near his daughter. They threatened him even more by saying they were planning on adopting her, so his visiting should cease. Sam seems to be...

...Become a Critic Law Abiding Citizen was a very action packed mind binding thriller, it kept me on the edge of my seat from the very first scene to the very last scene. The advertising and previews of this movie did not prepare viewers for the action and mind binding events that took place. This movie had the viewer’s loving the victim that becomes the villain. The end of the first scene grabbed viewer’s attention. The action begins very unexpectedly and keeps viewers not wanting to miss a second. Because it begins with what the viewer see as a very possible real life situation. It keeps them feeling that this could happen to them, and if it did, we are left to wonder. Would we do what he did? In the beginning the movie viewers saw who the main character is, and who his family is. This tells viewers why his pain runs so deep. As the movie progresses we are not sure how he is doing but, we are rooting for him to get every bit of revenge. At this point, the movie goes into a little less realistic tone, but you do not care because you are with him one-hundred percent. Along with the action and suspense, this film offers a little twist that makes you say to yourself “that is how he did it”. This is where the viewer’s understand some of the reasons for events that took place, that were not made clear at the time. While I loved the movie because of the plot, the script, wonderful acting, and of course the psychological part of it was the best. I did not like the ending; it left me...

Everyone immediately rush to the hospital to be their for comfort and support Noah and when he was released, they still were their for him and you will see this in a lot of the episode from season 1 and 2 how close knit these friends are. When you see the episode of Noah getting beaten up clearly because of his sexuality, it goes to show that society is ignorant and stuck on its hatred for what they see as un-godly things. In the past few years society has become better with the whole gay issue for example, gay marriage being accepted in some states so there is progress but that doesn’t mean people are not going to react and take matters into their own hands which can sometimes resort to violence....

...14300120165 April 21, 2016 Transformation of Literary Criticism Ronan McDonald, a lecturer in literature at the University of Reading, has written a book named “The Death of the Critic”, in which he described how the role of the literary critic has changed over the centuries, ultimately leading to "death" in the latter half of the 20th century. Nevertheless, to proclaim the death of the critic at this moment is still too early. What deserves more attention than this exaggerated title is the fact of decline of criticism. Literary criticism has always been viewed as an ivory tower in the eyes of the common people, mainly due to its professionalization. Certainly there are peaks in artistic creativity and troughs. In a period of increasing literary creativity, as T.S. Eliot famously said, the old works are seen in a new light. We are now rather in a trough of literary creativity, probably not only because the rise of varieties of competing media, but that less exciting work was generated for literary critics to start a literary revolution. That also means the present literary criticism needs to complete an operation performed by the best “doctors” and go through a major transformation. To be sure, literary criticism is not all negative. “Critic” is etymologically related to “criteria”, so the job of a literary critic is a judge, not a denouncer. The essence of literary criticism is therefore to evaluate. But there remain two problems when it comes to evaluation. Firstly, it is because...

Feminist critics are more “concerned with the ways in which literature [, or roles in society,] reinforce or undermine the economic, political, social, and psychological oppression of women” (The OWL at Purdue 2010). Feminist critics call their practice, reading through “Feminist Lens”, which is the idea of reading literature and “striving to expose the explicit and implicit misogyny in male writing about women” (Richter 2016). The Feminist lens are feminist critics way to expose the negative perceptions of women that is expressed by...

...Jazz and The White Critic The article “Jazz and White Critic” by Amiri Baraka brings light to an element of jazz criticism that he is frustrated by. Baraka finds controversy in the ideas white critics write about regarding jazz music. Baraka states, “Most jazz critics have been white Americans, but most important jazz musicians have not been.” In the 1960’s, when Baraka made this statement, jazz was becoming more popularized and socially accepted. African American jazz musicians took a long, strenuous journey over decades to push their music into the spotlight to become one of the most popular music styles in society internationally. The special element of jazz is its raw emotion. Baraka distinguishes between “White Jazz”, music that is learned and skill that is obtained technically, and “Negro Jazz” , music based on emotion passed down from generation to generation. The hardships experienced by African Americans and passed down through ancestry create the deep emotions that make up jazz. Baraka expresses that a white critic can fall into the trap of simplifying the genre to musical technicalities because they can never truly feel the music and understand its roots. Baraka uses an example of a solo to justify his point. He goes into detail about how a meaningful solo means almost nothing on paper. The screams, shouts, and other sound effects, along with the rapid change in tone mean so much more than any music sheet could ever describe. “…Screams and rants are only musical...

...produced to back up their songs were interesting and as visually stunning as the group members themselves. As popular as the band was with their many legions of fans, they were less than successful in gaining the acceptance of older musical critics of the time. The critics bluntly criticized the group’s efforts to produce decent music, at times belittling the band as a unit. Critics also criticized the band’s appeal to a younger fan base, often calling the band a novelty boy-band for pre-teens .The media at the time had a field day with the band as well. Much of the mass media coverage on the band had nothing to do with the music they produced, but with the music videos they made. Duran Duran was quickly dismissed as a video band by the critics and the media. Despite harsh criticism and less than credible media coverage, Duran Duran was a hugely successful band. They were international stars who sold millions of albums worldwide, have had number one hits all around the world, and have produced some of the most iconic songs in music history ( The New Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll pg.288). Duran Duran was and still is a sublime musical group that should have been given more credit and respect from music critics and the media in general. The origins of the band are as unique as the band’s name itself. Duran Duran was formed in Birmingham, England in 1978. The original members of the...

...According to critic Lubell Myron, “Thanatopsis, Bryant uses it to illuminate man’s relationship with nature. He is telling the readers to go out and listen to nature when thoughts of death come. He believes that people are only here for a short time before death takes them away and their bodies become a part of nature.” (408). The critic supports the poet on the explicit use of metaphor to bring out the theme of the poem and communicate vividly to the readers. In the fifteenth line of the poem, Bryant advises everyone that when life seems to end, one should go out and listen to the “teachings of nature” (Bryant 123). The use of the metaphor to bring out the message that Bryant had for the readers has been made easy to understand by the elements of images that have been explicitly used. However, by just referring to nature and its connection with a man, it would not be clear for the reader to know whether man is similar...

...Courtney Vargas C. Abbott English 102 May 2, 2013 The Perks of Being a Wallflower: Which is better, the movie or book? Being nominated for awards from groups such as Toronto International Film Festival, Writers Guild of America for Best Adapted Screen Play, and Detroit Film Critics Society for Breakthrough Artist, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor, and winning Independent Spirit Awards for Best First Film and Boston Society of Film Critics for Best Supporting Actor, it is no wonder that The Perks of Being a Wallflower is described as a “heartfelt and sincere adaptation that is bolstered by strong lead performances” (Rotten Tomatoes, 2012). Just as far as the movie goes, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a story to remember. Stephen Chbosky is not only the author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower book, but is also the director of the movie. Taking place in the early 1990s, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a story of a teenager who is starting high school and his experiences through his freshman year. Charlie, the protagonist, is a loner entering high school and shortly after entering his school he essentially gets adopted into a group of smart, outcast seniors. His two best friends in the group Sam and Patrick, “seniors, stepsiblings, and self-defined misfit toys” (Chaney, 2012), give Charlie the time of his life his freshman year meeting new people through parties, football games, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and trying new things that most high school students...

...to Arms has met with harsh criticism regarding a number of issues within its storyline. Critics constantly pick apart the themes and motifs present within the story in an attempt to pinpoint exactly what he meant and why he wrote it in the manner he did. One of the most debated topics in the story is that of love. Even after years of debate, the vast number of critics has never been able to agree on the controversial issue of love in regard to one simple question: Was Frederic Henry actually in love with Catherine Barkley? Though numerous critical analyses are available as evidence to argue either side of the issue, it is my belief that the most compelling arguments are made by those critics who support the idea that Frederic Henry was in fact in love with Catherine Barkley. Throughout the whole of A Farewell to Arms, it is never made perfectly clear to the reader whether or not Frederic Henry is actually in love with Catherine Barkley. What in the end becomes such a passionate relationship starts off very different so the reader is never able to decide exactly where Henry stands. One critic, Melissa Howard, sees this in what is only their second encounter when Henry “...attempts to kiss her and she slaps him, however, rather than being dismayed he feels that it gives him the advantage. Clearly, Henry views their relationship as a game” (Howard). This last line is the point that critics repeatedly argue in an attempt to prove that Henry’s feelings toward Catherine are based...

...voicing their opinions whether through the print media or the audi-visual media. These people are called opinion leaders or what we commonly call them “critics”. Critics in today’s world are extremely influential in all fields be it movies, fashion, technology or even travel. Their opinions are highly valued and they are feared to a very large extent because their one comment can seal the fate of a movie or a product in the market. Critics today are not just confined to big names such as Shobha De or Rajeev Makhani or Vir Sanghvi each and every consumer has largely acquired the status of a critic with the advent of social media where every person’s view becomes a critical opinion because there are hundred people who read the comment or review and get influenced by their opinions. So with the freedom to voice ones opinion comes added responisbilty for every individual to be unbiased and fair while passing a judgement. An opinion leader whose every comment is regareded with so much importance should be very careful as to what he says for his one comment made in haste or prejudice can affect the fate of a product, person or movie and all the lives associated with all these products and people. They should be highly unbiased and should not hold any grudge while stating their opinions. Personally the judgement passed by critics doesn’t over power my decision too much when it comes to movies but in case of fashion, technology and others their opinions matter in infulencing my decision...
