Becoming a Man.

On september 11th 2013, I became the father of a beautiful baby girl. I was only 22

years old, and still very much a child myself, Now all of that had to change. As a young African
Americans male, I was forced to overcome such titles as "babydaddy", and "deadbeat dad" to prove not only to the world, but to myself and more importantly to my daughter that I was more than that.
I started working two jobs, I worked twelve hours at one, and eight at another. I worked day and night to make sure my daughter had the financial support that she deserved. However being a father is much more than throwing a few dollars your childs way. For the most part every bit of time I had off I spent with my daughter. I wanted to share the most important moments of her life with her, such as her first word, her first step, etc. Being a father is more than a "job";
There are no days off, instead it is more like a way of life. You have to live it, breathe it, and absorb it into your everyday life, It becomes a mentality. I've learned so many life lessons as a father. I've gained maturity, and learned to prioritize, and to take care of the things that matter most. Before I would have told you that being a father to a child was making sure they had a roof over their head, and clothes on their backs, and food to eat, but through this experience I now know it is much, much more. It is being there for them 100% with love and support, It is growing with them. It is transitioning from a boy to a man.

Try Not to Become a Man of Success Rather a Man of Value

...person is Albert Einstein. Albert Einstein once said Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man of value.This is my topic for today. What does it mean Try not to become a man of success but rather a man of value? Well, becoming someone of success is only a fraction of the bigger picture. Success can not be placed on a scale and weighed by any factors in your life nor can it be judged by the accomplishments you have tackled. Therefore, the word success becomes truly what it is, just a word. The dictionary defines the word success as one that succeeds but succeeds at what? Succeeds at meeting his goals or succeeds at life? If you think that becoming successful is reaching the goals you have set for yourself and you are constantly setting goals to better improve your lifestyle, your health, your future; then let me ask you this. If you have succeeded in obtaining your goals and you continue to set new goals to make you and your family life better, how can you be a success if you have yet to succeed with your new goals? There is actually an answer to this and Albert Einstein figured it out decades ago. Become someone of value. Let's look at that closer. Become someone of value. What does that mean? What is the difference between becoming a man of success and becoming a man of value? Success is about what you have earned and value is about what you can offer from what you have earned. Becoming someone of value represents a much larger and more important part of...

Sociology Essay

...is the view of family life gradually improving for all its members, becoming more equal and democratic. This view on family life was introduced by Young and Willmott in 1973 and they suggest that the modern family is moving away from the segregated conjugal role of the man going to work as the bread winner for the family and the woman to stay a home as the house wife and more towards the joint conjugal role where man and wife share tasks equally and spend leisure time with each other. Wilmott and Young describe this as the family becoming more symmetrical or becoming the symmetrical family. This is due to the fact that women go to work in families now and it is not just the man working to provide for the family. This supports the view suggesting that the family is growing more equal as back in the 1900’s women would have been expected to stay at home and take care of the housework, the children and care for the man also. There would vary rarely have been a working women In a family during the 1900’s. However this is where the women nowadays go to work and earn money to contribute to the family and to keep more money for her so she can have money to spend on her self. This obviously shows a movement away from gender inequality and boosts the role of the woman in the family. There are many other factors suggesting that the symmetrical family exists nowadays such as th involvement and idea of the new man. The view contrasting this is the feminist view of Anne Oakley who criticises...

Just Like That by Michael Richards

...English Essay Just like that – by Michael Richards The story takes place in Australia, where a man drives a boy to the outback to shoot kangaroos. The boy is actually a quite nice shot, but the boy dislikes the situation more and more, as the number of killed kangaroos rises. Finally, the boy spots a male kangaroo, he shots the animal and feels like a man, but he also feels regret. There are only two characters in this short story; we have the boy and the man. The boy is the essential character, and the one we follow throughout the entire story and the man is merely a sort of guide (page 1 line 1 – 9). The man could very easily be the boy’s father, but since he is not mentioned as “the father”, he could also very easily be a man, who the boy shares a bond with. The boy is in his youth and is actually on his way to becoming a man, which he also does at the end (page 4 line 16 – 19), while the man is probably somewhere between 35 -45, since he is still in shape to hunt (page 1 line 16 – 19), but he is still old enough to provide some sort of guidance. The boy relies on the man to help him execute the mortally wounded kangaroos (page 3 line 25 – 30), but the man does not seem to gain anything from this arrangement, besides that I might be his duty to see to it, that the boy completes this rite of passage. The environment is pretty typical for any random outback in Australia; we have kangaroos (page 3 line 12), the temperature is high, the trees...

Courtier

...written by, Baldesar Castiglione, The Courtier helps define exactly what this social class consisted of. This book highlights many of the areas in which one would need to excel at to be considered better than an average man, and on his way to becoming a courtier. The main idea that being a courtier stems from is that of a universal man, or known during the Renaissance, “unos universal”. This was the idea of a man who was able to be proficient in activities across the board including math, sports, music, looks and so forth. Throughout, The Courtier two men discuss and argue what exactly it means to be a courtier. Through this discussion they are creating a broad set of guidelines to teach others how to be a courtier, and a gentlemen of Rome. I think that through the entirety of this book the main message that Castiglione is trying to get across is what exactly does it take to become a courtier. Throughout the book there are countless instances where it has specific guidelines as to what it means to be a courtier. “But to come to some particulars: … true profession of the Courtier must be that of arms” (Castiglione 24). This is one instance in the book where it gives a particular aspect of what it takes to be a courtier. However, as is the theme of the book the other man discussing this topic has an opposite view of the main profession of a courtier, “I would have our Courtier descend sometimes to quieter and more peaceful exercises” (Castiglione 29). These more peaceful aspects of...

Examples Of Equivocations In Macbeth

...The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare tells of a man who is driven by ambition, greed, and equivocations which leads to his own demise. Many times through the play, equivocations are spoken to evade the truth and deceive the listener. A prime example of those who speak equivocations are the three witches. The three witches constantly visit Macbeth and tell him of his fate through rhyme and ambiguous language rather than tell Macbeth exactly what his fate entails. As Macbeth is lured by the fate that these witches speak, he is deluded of the truth about what will occur. Fueled by his current ambitions and greed for power and promotion, Macbeth looks forward to his destiny, to become king of Scotland, with feelings of positivity. However,...

Lean on One Another

...Forming a Lifelong Bond In late 2009, I had a chance encounter with a man at a local restaurant while out to lunch with a close friend. I approached him based strictly on his good looks. After a brief introduction, I left him my phone number. He called that night, and from that point on, my life has been forever changed. It turns out that this man is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. In 2009, he had been sober for 6 years. He felt it his duty to pay society back by coming a volunteer at a local homeless shelter that serves women and children who are homeless due to various circumstances. Initially, I thought to myself, I better steer clear of this man. But being the optimist that I am, I began to interact with him daily. I told him I was a nurse who had worked many years as a Hospice nurse and often worked with the indigent. He asked if I would come and work as a volunteer nurse at the shelter, providing brief health assessments and patient education. I was a little hesitant, but after some persuasion, agreed to operate a trial clinic one night a week. I was introduced to the Director of Admissions, Maggie, prior to starting. She, herself, had been homeless at one time. Once she was able to rebuild her life, she felt compelled to help others in which she shared common ground with. Prior to becoming a nurse, I was a 16-year-old mother with poor family support. Though I was never homeless, I was hopeless at times, just like these women within the shelter. Soon after meeting...

He can no longer be the weakling who let everyone run over him. Telemachus is always on the side of the elders and because of this he is able to grow and implement their characteristics. As the poem progressed, Telemachus was soon referred to as Odysseus’ son, which was an honor because his father was considered such a hero. Later Telemachus was called by Telemachus, his own name excelling beyond his father, becoming a great and powerful man. Due to his lack of power at the start of the poem, Telemachus is referred to as weak and a coward. Originally he isn’t able to kick out the suitors due to his lack of strength and confidence. While Athena is trying to give him strength, she says, He prayed, and Athena was with him Looking just like Mentor with Mentor’s voice.
