...In 1993, One Dollar Inc. officially changed its name to Dollar Tree. Dollar Tree is a leading discount variety store in the United States. Their inventory is priced at one dollar including food, toys, housewares, cleaning supplies, beauty aids, paper products and many other odds and ends. Dollar Tree is able to offer its customers a wide variety of products for just one dollar because of its purchasing power. The company buys products in huge quantities. Dollar Tree imports roughly 40 percent of its stock, purchases manufacturers’ overage and maintains a strong focus on controlling costs. However, Dollar Tree recently announced an $8.5 billion acquisition. The figure rose to $10 billion due to stock prices soaring. Dollar Tree agreed to divest 330 Family Dollar stores to private-equity firm Sycamore Partners. The combined organization will operate more than 13,000 stores in 48 states forecasting sales exceeding $19 billion annually. Dollar Tree anticipates the deal will result in an estimated $300 million of annual run-rate by the end of the mergers third year. Again, the merger levels the playing field for competition with a large retail store, Walmart. The dollar concept is once again gaining popularity in the U.S. due to changing shopping patterns. Dollar stores’ convenient locations give them a competitive edge over traditional Wal-Mart stores, which are usually located on the outskirts of cities. The retail giant has also ramped up its own small store expansion...

...How Child Obesity Affects Children from Low-Income Families American children are getting fatter everyday. This includes a variety of reasons such as the lack of exercise, steady high calorie diet, and junk food. This problem affects many children living within the United States, but children from low-income families are more at risk of becoming obese. The reason, not only stems from their limited knowledge of healthy lifestyles but the cost and availability of nutritious foods as well. Childhood obesity has become a topic that garners much concern from parents, pediatricians, and politicians alike. During the 1970’s only 15% of children were obese, since then the percentage has been increased up to 30% (Donahue, Grisso, Orleans, and Paxson, 3). Despite the high overall levels of childhood obesity, impoverish children from ethnic minority groups present higher numbers. For example, 31% of Latino children, 23% of Black children, by contrast only 15% of both White and Asian children are considered obese (Grier and Kumanyika, 187). This makes up a 24% overall obesity for children within New York City. Asian American children are an exception to the general pattern of higher obesity rates amongst ethnic minority groups. The government is now becoming more concerned about this issue. Some of the ways they have tried to alleviate this issue is by making programs that create “opportunities for students to make informed choices regarding healthy eating behaviors” (Datar and...

...Federal assistance program of the Food and Nutrition Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for healthcare and nutrition of low-income pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and infants and children under the age of five has seen increase in the past five years growing from 8,088,005 to 9,176,736 participants [ (FNS USDA, 2011) ]. Many families that participate in the WIC program are military families in the U.S. military, I find it sad that the families who sacrifice for our freedom are stretched so thin that they need programs such as WIC. Many families use all of their coupons given to them to purchase food however many have found that the foods are sometimes what they don’t need, many wish they had more variety of fruits and vegetables instead of cereal, juice and peanut butter. Many families can’t use all the items they receive because their families don’t like what they are able to get or they don’t know what to use it for. A cookbook that allows moms to use the ingredients that they normally would not know what to do with would be in demand and would help from wasting the food that is provided for the family. The cookbook can be a hobby or release if you will because it will include other facts and ideas as well. This is something that can bring a lot of families and women together. Situational Analysis Cookbooks are something that will always be very viable in the...

...Anabell Abud Professor Armstead SYG 2000 Social Class Paper 20 March 2013 An Analysis of Social Class in the United States As we all explore the outside world, we all see the same traffic, stores, supermarkets, restaurants, and shopping malls. There is just one difference, we all live differently according to social class. The social stratification is a system of structured social inequality. It can be described as one lady going to Macys with her credit card wasting $1,000.00 dollars in merchandise and the other woman going to a store of discounts in clothing with a strict budget of $20.00 paying in cash. Another way I see how there are inequalities in our society is a simple question, can you afford to go buy a Michael Kors bag? If you can’t, then the Payless store it is to buy a look-a-like that can hopefully give strangers the impression that you’re not in the poverty sector. Those that are part of the super-rich see the poor as lazy; they deserve to be with meager needs because they haven’t shown merit to escape the poverty class, and the underprivileged that they have to pay out of their tax dollars to support them. Sociologists say we need the poor it’s good for our economy out of many various reasons that most of society doesn’t realize. At least journalist B. Ehrenreich saw what it was to not make it in America as an experiment to educate us all in the jobs of the working class from the article “Nickel and Dimed.” I know I became well aware of these differences...

...Concept Comparison and Analysis Across Theories Julie McKay NUR/513 Theoretical Foundations of Practice December 06, 2014 Stephanie Vaughn Ph.D. R.N. CCRN A concept is a term that theoretically describes and names a fact or phenomenon, thus providing it with a separate identity or meaning. Nurses use theories to clarify the events through nursing practice. A concept analysis provides insight to nursing knowledge and understanding of the concepts allows nurses to determine nursing actions (George, 2011). Quality of Life Quality of life (QOL) is a contemporary phrase which was first heard after the Second World War and, since then, has been frequently used but not well explained (Meeberg, 1993). Most theorists have at least an unexpressed belief that human health and QOL are associated closely. It is the interest of most healthcare providers to promote QOL for those who are seeking help. However, nurses cannot work with clients to attain QOL if the goal is unclear (Meeberg, 1993). Both Virginia Henderson and Rosemarie Parse are influential nursing theorists that share a common concept of QOL. This paper will explore perspectives in regards to QOL between these two theorists. Henderson’s Theory Virginia Henderson believed humans have universal needs of water, air, and food for survival, and everyone plays a part of the contribution to the well-being of each other leading to the creation of a healthy society. Nurses care for patients, sick or well until they can care...

...Analysis on the Business Opportunities Article: A village in a million The article, “A village in a million” written by “The economist” on December 16th 2010, shows a great insight into the Indian culture, highlighting with it the job opportunities that are beginning to arise as the country modernizes and with it how long-held and deeply embedded traditions are on the verge of becoming extinct. Shahabpur is a small village located in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. For centuries defined by its ancient ways and unique and diverse culture it is slowly being modernized. Shahabpur is located very close to the tracks and therefore not far from cities such as Mumbai. As the world progresses at a rapid rate coincidentally so does India. The farming in Shahabpur doesn’t bring in enough income, realising this many fathers send their children to work in factories in bigger cities, such as Mumbai furthermore many fathers are giving up their agricultural ways and moving towards factory work too, bringing in as much as 200rupees a day, twice what they can bring in back home. The business opportunities that arise from this vast movement to industrial work, is the opening of many more stores in Shahabpur bazaar and the increased exchange in money. As money comes in, Shahabpur is growing; three local schools have been set up, with more children being able to attend because of increased financial stability in the family. Parents are now realising the importance of education...

...Abstract This paper goes into great detail of describing the association of risks with insurance. We do not think that there could be risks associated with insurance but, there is. The next focus in the paper is to determine what types of ethical misconduct can be foreseen if the supply and demand of insurance was too much to handle. This paper gives opinion of whether or not a person’s income should be a consideration as to whether or not they should be insured. Driving factors for the basis of a consumer seeking insurance and how it compares to the empirical measurements were discussed in detail as well as how to measure the demand for insurance. Lastly, the paper breaks down the lemons principle in terms of how it applies to health care and where we are today. Key words: insurance, health, supply, demand, insured What is insurance without risk? When we think of the term insurance the first though that comes to mind is something that we are given by our employers or others in the event that something should happen to us we are covered. One can say that insurance for consumers is almost the same as the insurance we purchase for our cars. The insurance covers us for medical procedures that might have to be incurred at the time of an accident. The proper description of insurance is that of the providing by a company to the consumer in the return of a premium or co-pay (Folland, Goodman, Stano, 2013). Insurance now has become more important to have than ever with all of...

...Analysis of Contemporary Health Care Issue National health care expenses in the United States have been on the rise more rapidly than the national financial system for countless years, however several United States citizens are still lacking adequate health care. Sadly, health care spending is only going to rise and many people in the United States may have to make complicated decisions involving health care and additional responsibilities in their everyday lives if we do not start to reform. By reforming, it is hoped that America will see an increase to high-quality, affordable health care for all. Not only are private sector insurances enduring challenges due to health care spending, but Medicaid and Medicare are also. The Health Care Reform Act is hoping to drive down the cost or at least maintain the cost of health care spending. The reform is hoping to offer a delivery system that works better for clinicians and provider organizations by reducing their administrative burdens and helping them collaborate to improve care. The achievement of this reform will hopefully lead to assessable development in outcomes of care, and in the general health of the American people. Profit/Non-profit Although the provision of health services is dominated by not-for-profit organizations, there are many for-profit organizations as well that are affected by health care spending. With the National Health Care Reform Act, both profit and non-profit organizations could see a boost in...
