...BECOMING A WRITER January of 2011 was the beginning of a special adventure in my life as a student. I took an English class 0890, at Utah Valley University. Now, in the last days of this class, almost four months later, I can look back and see myself with a lot of problems in my writing that needed to be fixed. These four months in this class have helped me solve many writing challenges. I am far from perfect in becoming a good writer but I have learned that hard work and perseverance can produce wonderful results. Even though I learned many things, the three man points that I want to talk about are the following: quote analysis scaffold, grammar, and research online. The first month of the English 0890 class was intense, the students had to do a special analysis writing exercise called “Quote analysis scaffold”. It is the developing of many skills in one exercise. It helps develop reading and vocabulary comprehension. After the quote analysis scaffold is made, it can be used in the essay as a hook or concluding thought. We ended up doing around ten of these exercises. After writing the quote, provided from the teacher, this analysis was made from the following steps: The first thing was to do a research online about the author and make two to three sentences, on average, about who he was and what were his major contributions to society. Second, the students had to look for unknown words and their definition in the dictionary. After this, the third part was for the students...

...Who do you think your selected audience will be in your critical analysis essay? Describe this audience, and explain how they would benefit from any insights produced from your analysis of your selected article. I think my selected audience will be students of foreign descent that are interested in becoming English majors or studying literature. I think they would be the group that would benefit the most from this article. My audience would be composed of students that do not use English as their mother tongue but still want to pursue the language and study it. They would be passionate about studying English either to make a better life in the U.S. for themselves or simply help other students like themselves learn it in the future. I believe that the contents of this article would help those students in motivating them in becoming authors or writers themselves. Although this article mostly speaks towards her mother and how she had a different style of English, it still talks about how she was told she could never write or become a scholar in language because of English not being her primary language. She overcomes this and becomes a very revered Asian-American writer....

...I Call Myself a Feminist Rhetorical Analysis Virago 1. A domineering, violent, or bad-tempered women: ‘that virago of a wife of his needs locking up’ 1.1 archaic A woman of masculine strength or spirit; female warrior, quoted from the, Oxford Online Dictionary. In the book I Call Myself a Feminist twenty-five women came together to write a book on their experiences with feminism, how they are female warriors themselves, and how it has shaped them over the years. Each writer uses pathos to appeal to the readers emotions; whether it’s something exciting or something heartbreaking. The contributors of the book also include ethos in their chapters because the events that occurred were personal events that couldn’t be told from another perspective. The writers all came together to prove that all women should understand what feminism means and have some of it in their daily lifestyles. The writers show pathos, ethos, and logos in order to appeal to a wide audience of women and girls, the authors want to do...

...the best use of their big and strong learning musculature. To start, the learning analysis and this writer learning styles and strategies will be introduced. Second, a comparison of my own and Vark’s analysis of strategies will be presented, and finally, an assessment of changes on study habits for this writer will be offered. First, our focus here will be the Styles included on the VARK analysis which questions are focus on the way we take-in and give-out information. These Learning styles are Visual, Aural, Red/Write, and Kinesthetic. My learning style is Multimodal (three model) with strongest points on the visual mode which was 12, kinesthetic 10, read/write 10, and Aural 4. As seen by the numbers, none of the three styles stands out. Translating this, it might take longer for this writer to feel confident about the understanding and retaining of the information because involves not only seen something, but , getting examples, pictures about it, writing about it and also having some practice or hands-on, that help to get the best of the learning endeavor. However this allows for flexibility of choosing the best styles for the specific learning experience. Definitely Aural learning style is not a great part of this student learning anatomy because she gets easily distracted, her attention span when people is talking is very short and unproductive, since distraction possess this writer. My Preferred learning strategy is to identify similarities and differences by classifying...

...Are Writers Born or Made? The novel On writing A memoir of the Craft written by Stephen King gives rise to a great question. Are great authors born or made? According to Stephen King,” I don’t believe writers can be made, either by circumstance or self-will (although I did believe those things once” (King 18). The author is suggesting that a writer is born with the ability to be a good writer and it is through learned behaviors that these “talents are strengthened and sharpened.” (King 18). I feel King’s belief is very valid, many authors are born with a desire to write and with the determination and drive that it takes to become a great writer. Not all authors are in agreement with Stephen Kings perception on how an author is born not made. One in particular Dorthea Brande, the author of Becoming a Writer feels, “genius can be taught (once the secret emptiness of that phrase is understood) because in fact genius is as common as old shoes”. (Brande 12). This is quite an appealing idea and given Brande’s history and background I can understand some of her viewpoints on the matter. Brande (1893-1948) truly believes that a person has capability to take what little genius they are born with and transform it into the ability to become a great writer. The author puts a lot of emphasis on the idea that writes need to know what kind of habits impede the writing process. She describes “ways to help them develop healthy...

This is a rhetorical analysis on Marjane Satrapi’s story and we’ll see how the writer attempts to change the perception people have on the middle-east countries. The writer tries to prove that those countries are not as bad as depicted and there is still hope for the people living in those countries. She believes that people in the middle-east countries have the power to revolutionize their culture and fight for what they believe in. The writer is able to express the struggles and sufferings of the victims in the middle-east. Marjane Satrapi is shaped by the events in her life to become a rebel and through this, she is able to make the audience understand why people start and join revolutions in the middle-east. The writer is of the opinion that their culture is deeply flawed and in the beginning of the story, she is displeased that she has to wear a veil to school as it is mandatory for girls to wear veils, “Then came 1980: the year it became obligatory to wear the veil at school” (Satrapi, page 4), and the fact that boys and girls are still separated in school and can’t learn together. The writer mentions about her French school which was shut down because it was non-religious. The writer seeks to display the extent of cultural inequity and the social injustices...

...of “A random walk down Wall Street” Written by Burton G. Malkiel Chapter 1: Firm Foundations and Castles in the air A random walk means that future steps or directions cannot be predicted on the basis of past history. In the stock market, this concept means short-term changes of stock prices are unpredictable. Burton, writer of the book, distinguishes between “investing” and “speculating” and I agree this conceptual difference. Investing is purchasing assets to acquire profit in the form of reasonably predictable income such as dividend, interest, rentals over the long term. On the other hand, speculator buys stocks hoping for a short-term gain over the next days or weeks. Traditionally, investment experts have used one of two approaches for asset valuation. One is “the firm-foundation theory”, and the other is “the castle-in-the-air theory”. The interesting point is, two theories appear to be mutually exclusive. The firm-foundation theory insists that each investment instrument has a firm anchor of something called “intrinsic value”, which can be determined by careful analysis of present conditions and future prospects. Williams, writer of “The Theory of Investment Value”, went on to argue that the intrinsic value of stock was equal to the present value of its entire future dividend. The theory is reasonable, because the greater present dividends and increasing rate, the greater the value of the stock. The castle-in-the-air-theory focuses on psychic values,...

...Article analysis We all know that the price of gasoline is continually moving in an upward direction. But what we really want to know is why this is happening, and what measures are necessary to cease this trend. In this selection, the writer will first consider the utility derived from gasoline. Secondly, we will be given a description of occurrences that changed the demand of gasoline and its market and equilibrium prices, assuming the supply remains the same. Thirdly, the author will describe what has occurred to change the supply of gasoline and its market and equilibrium prices, assuming that demand remains the same. Lastly, the writer will give his opinion on whether he feels gasoline is elastic or inelastic, and what this implies about how consumers respond to changes in the price of gasoline. Satisfaction of wants and needs obtained by the consumption of goods, is the main focus of utility analysis. The decision to purchase and consume a good is affected by the utility generated from consumption. Utility assumes a very precise meaning, which differs from the everyday use of the term, when used in the analysis of consumer behavior. The term utility means “useful”, in common use. For example, something that would be useful around the house: a “utility” knife. In Sports, one that can perform well in several positions would be considered a “utility” player. By all levels of government in the United States, a variety of taxes and fees are assessed on motor fuels. While...

...Response Paper Why Selfies Matter Alexandra Sifferlin Selfies are becoming a massive trend in social media and Sifferlin (2013) provides an in-depth analysis of the ever-increasing vogue. Selfies are primarily trade-marked as a narcissistic practice and is merely an extension of self-absorption. Although some researchers beg to differ and defines selfies as a mean of self-exploration. Dr. Letamendi (as cited in Sifferlin, 2013), said that selfies allow people to convey messages and depict emotions. Sifferlin also brought the idea of over-analyzing the whole thing by citing Dr. Rutledge. Dr. Rutledge argues that selfies existed from a long time but is becoming more prevalent because of the advancement and easily accessibility of technology. Although Rutledge believes that it is important to know the limits and consequences of selfies as some may unwillingly send rather suggestive and indulgent selfies. She said that it is important for parents to understand the verge of propriety as each teen is unique. Furthermore Sifferlin also introduced selfies as a tool for therapist to use to gain entrance to deeper adolescent issues. She also talked about the peer pressure effect of selfies where one is influenced by seeing other’s selfies on social media. To conclude, Sifferlin says that selfies are definitely worth studying about as it has taken a place in the massively influential social media. The article was meant for parents, psychologists, therapists, guardians and even teens...

Too often the church is behind the secular community, when it comes to embracing a new trend that impacts our society. ...Reason, Romanticism, Realism, and Modernism Since 1660 the literary world has gone through four major periods, The Age of Reason, Romanticism, Realism, and Modernism. Each period had very distinct characteristics and writers who were able to define the style through their words. The Age of Reason was a time of wit, philosophy, and satire that Johnathan Swift and Voltaire utilized to explain their views on the modern world. Fredrick Douglass, William Wordsworth, and Jean Jacques Rousseau embodied the greatest aspects of the Romanticism era focusing on solitude, nature, and feelings. In 1830 the Realism movement started, a movement strife with inclusiveness and determinism that was highlighted in the works of Gustave Flaubert and Fyodor Dostoevsky. The most recent period was Modernism in which William Butler Yeats and T.S. Eliot used rationalism and psychoanalysis when writing their poems. Each period uprooted the period before it and the writers values and views contradicted those of the writers who proceeded them. The major aspects of each period are very apparent when dissecting the writers who lived through them. The Age of Reason covered from 1660 to 1770 and focused on order, cities, and used satire as a tool to find reason. Voltaire’s Candide and Swift’s A Modest Proposal were both satire that questioned traditions and philosophical norms of the times. In Candide, Voltaire mocks the idea that eternal optimism of ones course in life by continuously throwing...
