Coaching and Leadership in the Workplace

...Mike Noble in his article, Transform Managers into Coaches: Five Steps for Coaching Success, an effective manager is a coach and not just a boss. The most effective managers are those who can coach and collaborate. If one is able to coach their employees effectively then they are able to create sustainable long-term results for themselves and their company. Coaching is action of helping others to perform better, whether it is through feedback, demonstrations, or teaching. It is investing in the people within a company and shaping them into better employees so that they can not only perform their tasks better, but also better qualify for promotions. Mike Noble’s article breaks down the five steps necessary for successfully becoming a coaching leader and the benefits of becoming one. By coaching your employees, you become a transformational leader who enhances as well as generates new experiences for employees, thus gaining a stronger level of commitment from them. The first step to transforming a manager into a coaching leader is to build a personal case for coaching. The manager has to want to develop their coaching skills and see the relevance of developing them. Once a manager understands that they can achieve better results through coaching instead of taking a command and control response to management, they will be willing to develop their skills as a coach. Managers are more inclined to seize the opportunity when they realize that many successful leaders and executives are...

...College hoops' black coaching issue Myron Medcalf [ARCHIVE] ESPN.com | July 18, 2013 When a national sportswriter calls to talk about minority hiring in college basketball, folks of all races seem to get nervous. As I sought feedback following last week's release of the "2012 Racial and Gender Report Card: College Sport" by Central Florida's Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport -- the report excludes historically black colleges and universities -- which states that the current pool of Division I African-American head coaches (18.6 percent through the 2011-12 season) is at its lowest mark since the 1995-96 season, people weren't sure what, if anything, they should say. Multiple administrators passed on the opportunity. The NCAA wanted to see my questions, and then it wanted a pre-interview phone conversation before it ultimately emailed its responses. The coaches who talked on the record always ended our chats with the same concern: "I didn't say anything that will make me look bad, right?" Shaka Smart Andy Lyons/Getty Images To reach Shaka Smart's level, black coaches often have to overcome certain labels. I don't blame them. It's an incendiary issue, because we're uncomfortable with race as dialogue. It's still a subject that makes athletic directors -- 89 percent of whom are white at the Division I level, per the report -- squirm. Minority coaches speak cautiously, because they don't want to be labeled as rebels or militants. That hesitancy...

Student-Athletes and Responsibility

...player from the National Football League, journalists from the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network and the New York Times, and an athletic director discussing responsibility issues in college athletics. Organizational Issues and Social Pressures The issues in this video clip are in regard to student-athlete performance. The panel of speakers evaluates how student athletes focus more on the sport rather than education. The student athlete faces the ethical dilemma of academics versus athletics. In the video clip a speaker also indicates how the student-athlete does not interact with the student body and is so far removed from the academic experience (Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, 2011). Although there are opportunities to go to college with an athletic scholarship, controversy follows. Another issue is that athletic scholarships pose as a barrier for college athletes to get an education, which is why there is a debate for revising distribution of athletic scholarships (Gerdy, 2006). Academic clustering is administrators grouping student-athletes into a major where they can perform academically at the same level so they can remain eligible for an athletic scholarship (Schneider, Ross, & Fisher, 2010). The student-athlete may receive an athletic scholarship depending on their athletic performance, but it is that student’s...

Transactional Leadership

I remember how many of them fought for a better life for themselves, I just met them halfway” (Jenkins & Summitt, 2013). The importance of a player and coach relationship in the athletes’ athletic and academic objectives is exemplified in this quote. Countless student-athletes begin their careers with aspirations of becoming professionals, and desire a coach who will help them achieve this goal. Disregarding student athletes’ aspirations, in a recent NCAA report, only 19.1 percent of men’s basketball players play professionally, with only 1.1 percent of those playing in the National Basketball...

African American Male Stereotypes

...successful in life. Some people do not pay attention when African Americans males succeed in life but are only concern when they failed. A lack of motivation, negative stereotypes, and athletics are three points that impede African Americans males from succeeding at four-year universities. African American males feel as soon as they are enrolled in a four-year university, they will have graduated without putting in an effort. Once they are accepted to their college and developed a routine, African Americans males tend to forget their motive why they are in college in the first place. They fail to realize how much work they had to put in to get where they are today and become lazy when it comes to responsibilities. Once they lose focus on their academic priorities it decreases their chances being successful which puts them a situation that’s will result in a consequence in their education. According to James a 20-year-old business major from suburbs “I waited until the last minute . . . [the end of the semester] and I failed the course.” Once they are given their independence they take advantage of their college experience. They assumed that can party all night long and still aced a quiz the next day. Males think they know everything based on other people experience or what their expectations they do not really have to focus. Additionally, African Americans males promote negative stereotypes. They mimic the negative actions of music artists such as Chief Keef by degrading women, calling...

Film Background Report

...Price 1 Tranisha Price Dr. Brennan HUMN 1002 Film Background Report Coach Carter In many sports movies there is some type of resilience and character building that takes place. Playing sports goes hand in hand with resilience and character. These two articles personally talk about the importance of these two topics which tie in with many of the events of the movie. The team in this movie overcame a lot of adversity to prove to everyone else around them that they could do better with the right motivation. They faced the fact that you play and conquer everything as a team; overcoming the bad grades of many and turning that around to get themselves into colleges so that they could pursue better things for their future. Pursuing their dreams against great odds taught them character and to stay tough and stick together through all things. When you go through many different experiences such as Timo going through the death of his older cousin he reacted in a proactive way rather than a reactive one. In Minchew’s article it states that what matters most is how we respond to life’s experiences. He states that proactive people take initiative and assume control of their lives. In the movie instead of Timo continuing on a negative route he decided to go back to the team and do something positive to stay out of trouble. My American Journey

...I still seek to become the best runner I can be, which may mean becoming an Olympian or it might mean becoming a competitive runner in the United States. I truly don’t know. This dream still persists and because I continued to pursue it, I, along with nine other girls in California, was chosen by Olympian runner, Brenda Martinez to go to her annual running camp in Big Bear. Nevertheless, this particular running journey and the successful result that followed has been the most memorable of my life and it is for this reason that I decided to share my experience. I was fortunate enough to be selected for this running camp with Olympian runner, Brenda Martinez because I made the bold choice of submitting an essay to her writing contest after my coach had continuously insisted that I write in. Of course, this task of writing in and sharing my personal struggles and achievements was like no other assignment I have ever had. It is no doubt that I have encountered various struggles since I began running, but when the time came to apply to this camp I realized that I lacked...

Critical Reflection on Coaching Within Business

...statement on Plagiarism and Academic Integrity on the University website at www.students.utas.edu.au/plagiarism. Critical reflection on my coaching experience: An ongoing journey Coaching is a relatively new professional field that has increased in popularity during the past decade (Tompson et al, 2008). Despite several different definitions of coaching and ways to understand or categorize coaching practice, all coaching’s approaches have a common denominator: the goal of achieving changes in the client. Depending on the coach’s beliefs and methods and also on the client’s objections, the nature and expression of the changes will be varied and may be defined in two ways: perceptual or cognitive; (Meyer 2010) and concrete behavioural changes (Kress, 2008). In March 2012 I commenced a course that involved participating in coaching relationship external to my current organisation. Prior to the commencement of this relationship I completed a 360° feedback survey on core leadership and management competencies. Findings from the survey facilitated the development of an individual action plan that assists me to extract optimal value from the program. This exercise also informs and guides the coaching process. The stated aim of this coaching relationship is to promote and accelerate my personal and career development. This is achieved through regular face to face meetings and telephone conversations. These occasions promote open communication between my coach and I and critical reflection...
