Life without Bees

By: Aisha Walker

The Current situation: Life without Bees Colony collapse disorder, as situation in which adult bees become crucial to the colony’s survival by abandonment of the hive by either dying or flying off. The disorder was uncannily reminiscent of the mysterious disappearance of the Mayans centuries ago, and as the crisis continued, researches scrambled to learn why our bees were declining and determine what to do. Colony collapse disorders has wiped out over 10 million bee hives percent annually in recent years and there are now about $2 billion over the past six years. The death rate for colonies has hit 30 the U.S; down from 6 million in 1947 and 3 million in 1990. That downward spiral leaves”virtually no cushion of bees for pollination’” the report authors write.
In recent years, agricultural pesticides have become a leading suspect in bee deaths. Attention has focused on a class of chemicals called neonicotinoids as global concern grows over the bee population crash, which has affected several European countries too.But scientist increasingly believe several interacting factors from diseases carrying parasites to poor nutrition to pesticides and is responsible for the mass die off. For instance, the report says studies have shown that exposure to even non-fatal levels of neonicotinoids may make bees more susceptible to disease; and as agriculture becomes more industrial and natural habitats that formerly bordered farmland are destroyed, bees are being starved of the food they need to help produce food for humans. “ undernourished or malnourished bees appear to be more susceptible to pathogens, parasites, and other stressors, including toxins.

Theory: No BEES, No Crops In 2013, some bad news had been brought to people’s attention. Each year honeybees from across the country make their way to California, which grows 80 percent of the world’s almonds, to pollinate the almond crop. But bees have been dying in usually large numbers for several years now, and this year appear worse than ever.
The problem we face, if we don’t have healthy populations of pollinators particularly honeybees, extend beyond almonds. Three fourths of top crops grown in the world require animals mostly insects for pollination. Odds are that most of your favorite fruits, nut and melons are pollinated by honeybees.
Real Application Theory:
In most of recent years, colony collapse disorders, which is mysterious and devastating loss of bee colonies in United States, Canada, and Europe is the main reason for why bees are disappearing. The first reports of these colony collapse disorders affected 23 percent of commercial U.S beekeepers and some beekeepers lost 90 percent of their hives. Since then, colony collapse disorders had no signs of slowing. Substantial yearly losses of bees, 30 percent or higher have become the norm.
Conclusion:
A world without bees would mean a world without majority of our most common fruits and vegetables. No, that doesn’t mean the human race would become extinct; but with the lack of bees; production, it would make life tougher. Our food source will be limited because over 90 percent of the fruits and vegetables that we de0end are from the bees’ pollination.

Speech About Bees

...Bzzzzzz bzzzzzz bzzzzzz bzzzzzzz BEES! They are everywhere! Now one common misconception of bees is that they are violent, scary creatures that are out to sting you. I myself have a terrible fear of bees. They freak me out. But after doing a lot of research on bees I have learned that there is lot more behind the stinger. So I am going to borrow a few minutes of your time to inform you on all the amazing things that make bees so remarkable and why they are so fascinating. I am going to talk to you about how their jobs provide for other bees in the colony, second I am going to talk to you about how they communicate with other bees, and then lastly I am going to talk to you about their flight and how powerful it is. So first of all bees are never alone because they are part of a colony. According to the New York Times, the jobs for bees are divided into two categories; the age of the bees and the gender. In terms of age, if you are a younger bee you will be taking care of the queen, you will be catering to the queen and all of the services the queen needs. If you are an older bee your job is to protect and build the hive and collect nectar and pollen. In terms of gender, if you are a female bee, you’re actually a worker bee. The female bees will fly out of the hives and they are the only ones that are going to collect nectar for the hive. If you are a male bee on the other hand your job is quite different. You simply protect the bee hive and fertilize the eggs of the queen...

Burt Bees

...1. Develop a brand positioning map using the information in the case. In a 2x2 map, plot the different brands including Burt's Bees on what you consider to be the two important/relevant attributes for consumers in this category. Two relevant attributes for consumers in this category are types of product ranging from natural and pseudo-natural to traditional, and brand usage or awareness. Consumers can make the decision based on what they prefer- natural products cost higher than traditional; however, some people would prefer reasonably priced products regardless of their ingredients. Brand usage indicates how the brand is popular among consumers as consumers would rather spend on brands that they can trust rather than the ones that may use natural ingredients but have failed to convey their value proposition to the consumers effectively. Basically, if the consumers’ perception of the overall brand is positive, they would buy the brand. However, consumers need to have strong brand awareness to have the positive perception about the value proposition and image of the brand. 2. What are the sources of Burt's Bees' brand equity? Utilize concepts from the course. Use facts from the case to support your position. Brand awareness and brand image contribute towards strong brand equity. As Burt’s Bees want to enter the mass market, one needs to consider the brand awareness of brands such as Dove and Olay. These brands are known for their traditional products and rank high on...

Secret Life of Bees

...The novel, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, shows the tragic events in a young girls life and demonstrates how she overcomes her problems and finds herself. Lily Owens starts out as a troubled and confused girl. By the end of the book she overcomes her obstacles and becomes a confident young woman. Lily uses the pain from her father's abuse and mother's absence to mature into a young woman. When the story starts out, Lily Owens is a little girl who has always been put down by her father and as a result has a lack of confidence and lack of hope for the future. When lily thinks she hears bees buzzing in her room she called for her fathers help and T-Ray said " I guess they must have flown out of that cuckoo clock you call a brain. You wake me up again, lily, and I'll go get the Martha Whites, you hear me?" (Page 31/734). This shows here that she was abused physically and mentally . Instead of receiving comfort from her father Lily was made fun of and threatened. Obviously from the quote, we learn that the emotional and physical abuse were already a pattern in Lily's life. Already Lily's strength of character surfaces. Although she was afraid of her fathers form of punishment her courage and boldness are demonstrated when she says "still I couldn't let the master go entirely- T-ray thinking I was so desperate I would invent an invasion of bees to get attention. Which is how I got the bright idea of catching a jar of these bees, presenting them to T-Ray and saying...

Secret Life of Bees

...English 102 12/10/13 Secret Life of Bees In 1964, Lily Owens is fourteen years old. She has no mother, a father whom she despises, and no friends to turn to when she needs a shoulder to cry on. Not only does Lily have to deal with feelings of loneliness and betrayal caused by her parents, but in a time troubled by negativity towards the Civil Rights Act, she is also faced with situations that force her to grow up very fast. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd is a page turning novel about Lily’s journey to find answers to her past. There are themes and symbolisms throughout the book. Racism, forgiveness/coping, and bees are big ones for many characters throughout the novel. The summer of 1964 in South Carolina comes at the peak for race relationships in American history, a summer when much of white Americans showed no respect towards the blacks. The nature of racism is discussed throughout Lily’s story. It is important to understand she grew up in the South, where races were separated by both law and attitudes. Lily does not attempt to reconcile her love for Rosaleen with her understanding that blacks are inferior to whites. “Rosaleen pulled back the towel; I saw an inch-long gash across a puffy place high over her eyebrow.” (Kidd). Is one of the first times she started to see racism, but not to the fullest understanding. When Rosaleen’s life is threatened by a system that Lily doesn’t understand, she knows only that she must save Rosaleen’s life, even...

Read the Case and Answer the Questions Burts Bees

...Burt’s Bees Case Questions 1. Burt’s Bees does definitely differentiate from its competitors by it pricing strategy. Often a company’s pricing strategy is to offer a lower price than its competitors for a contrastable product because a lot of people think “the lower the better”. Burt’s Bees does the exact opposite. It is their purpose to get attention by having striking high prices. By that they make the customer curious and make him to inform more about that product. The customer realizes that Burt’s Bees sell mostly natural and green products and that meets a lot of today’s people’s values. So somehow the high prices are also legit as they have a higher value then competitors’ products. 2. Burt’s Bees has executed a value-based pricing strategy. Their products on the lip balm market for example differentiates itself from competitor’s products by supporting a natural and ecofriendly value a lot of people appreciate and they are sometimes willed to pay more for the product included the additional value. 3. Burt’s Bees nowadays has a lot more of products in its portfolio then just wax based lip balm. But all of these products (most of them are in the personal care market) claim to be very natural and the prices are all set noticeable higher than competitors products. The company maintains a commitment that they mostly use natural ingredients and they have the 99 percent average in natural products. Conflict Theory In The Secret Life Of Bees

...The Secret Life of Bees The movie, The Secret Life of Bees, takes place in the summer of 1964 in Sylvan, South Carolina. This movie was not my first pick for the course paper, but it came on TV one night recently and I decided to watch it. This was a really good film and it showed how racism plagued our country not so long ago. Conflict Theory, originally the brainchild of Karl Marx, is the theoretical perspective that best fits this movie (Brym and Lie, 11). Racism, prejudice, and discrimination are the main focus of this movie while also telling the story of a young teenage girl named Lily (The Secret Life of Bees). Lily doesn’t see in colors or race, but sees only in the love, character, and value of a person. Lily, a young white girl,...

The Secret Life Of Bees Quote Analysis

...The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd has many life lessons in it. It has examples of family problems, racial problems, and it also shows how love is not affected just because of race. In the book, Lily's life is compared to a bee's life constantly. From how she is lost without the queen bee, or in other words her mom, or how Lily needs the touch and care from loved ones just like the bees do. One epigraph from chapter nine says “ The whole fabric of honey bee society depends on communication- on an innate ability to send and receive messages, to encode and decode information”, this quote is related to not just this chapter, but this whole book because Lily is not always truthful about her life back in Sylvan and she does not tell the Boatwright sisters everything that is going on. In chapter nine, Lily has an internal conflict and begins to feel bad about her lies that she has been telling August. She wants to tell August the truth but she is afraid that the truth will do more bad than good and that August will call T. Ray to come get Lily. Some of the lies Lily has told August...
