Yes a manager has the ability to motivate an employee. Depending on the employee and the type of motivation the manager is trying to use. An employee will respond to positive stimuli as opposed to negative stimuli for motivation.
Motivation can be offered in a positive way offering such things as a bonus, extra paid time off, gift cards, cash, raffle tickets, other tangible goods and rewards. Motivation can also be offered in a negative way such as blackmail or threats. Both of these things are in all reality highly unmotivational and illegal. Usually that sort of thing doesn’t work out in the end.
Intrinsic motivation gives a person a sense of satisfaction from doing the job or behavior. It is motivation based purely on the actual accomplishment of the job. Examples of intrinsic motivation are things such as my daughter taking our dog for a walk, the kids swinging on swings, and my cooking and baking. All of these things are done for the pure enjoyment we get from doing them and not for any reward we are given. If you can get someone to feel good about what they are doing intrinsic motivation is and can be a very powerful and useful tool.
Extrinsic motivation is when someone performs a certain job or acts in a specific way in order to obtain an outside reward or in order to avoid punishment. Examples of extrinsic motivation are things like the kids making their beds or cleaning their rooms, for money, doing dishes or eating all their dinner for ice cream or so they will not get in trouble. This sort of motivation though very affective takes the emphasis away from the actual reward or behavior and places it upon the reward. If they no longer get the reward the likelihood that the behavior or the job stops is higher. If it is an unwanted behavior than extrinsic motivation may be the way to go. It can be very beneficial in

...CheckPoint Motivating Employees Lesley McDaniel BEH/225 October 5th, 2012 Dr. Karen Pasveer Is it possible for a manager to motivate and employee? According to Morris & Maisto, Intrinsic motivation is a desire to perform a behavior while extrinsic motivation stems from motivation to perform a behavior to avoid a consequence or punishment. In intrinsic motivation a child will climb a tree or play a game while an adult will play a musical instrument because they genuinely get enjoyment from the task. (Morris & Maisto, 2010). An employee who is intrinsically motivated may work with extra enthusiasm at a task while his manager is around. The employee does not necessarily work for a reward but because the employee is inspired from within to perform the task. The employee may complete a task that was quite difficult. Upon completion, his manager tells him that he did a great job and to keep up the great work but nothing more. This employee could then be less intrinsically motivated the next time he is to complete the same task or another one the manager may ask him to complete. Extrinsic motivation is what inspires an employee to complete a task for such things as a monetary reward or to avoid being punished. A manager may use this type of motivation while offering a raise in pay or a promotion. The employee would then work hard, never be late to work and be sure their tasks were completed correctly and on time. However, this motivation may decrease once the task...

...Motivating Employees Kimberly Brooks December 2, 2011 BEH/225 Gareciela Pulliam There are several ways that an employer can motivate their employees. When employees are motivated they tend to be more productive than those employees who have not been motivated. When people work for companies or organizations and they are motivated they assist the company or organization to be gainfully successful. If you find one employee that is motivated then your company will have a better chance at having the other employees to become motivated. Sometimes you may notice that the person that is motivated is being treated in a superior way opposing the way that the person who is non-accomplished is being treated. Motivation can be a way that things get done in an appropriate time and manner. Motivation at work can be difficult, the employer should be aware of how they can motivate and reward their employees. A manager should also be able to motivate their employees to be able to get things done that are needed. A manager should know the needs of their employees and realize that everybody is different. The principles of Maslow’s first theory and the two-factor theory of Herzbergs are important to know and understand. Achievement, recognition, advancement, responsibility, and the possibilities of growth are intrinsic and give satisfaction to the company and the employees. Dissatisfaction within the employees occurs when hygiene factors, extrinsic or job context are not present at...
